I just want to say that in my tiny part of the world the day is glorious. Birds and insects flourishing. Blossom everywhere.Mr Frog sunbathing.I hold onto this and hope. And for all those people being pounded by hate and bombs and the crazed words of a madman,we despair with you.May this evil vanish.

Hoar frost this morning and it hasn’t risen above zero all day. Everything quiet and still. Feathery tracery on branches and twigs.

Two anniversary cakes. Actually simnel cakes because this is my favourite cake. Decorated with honeysuckle , hawthorn berries , pittosporum, some bits of rosemary. 20 people for tea today and I’m not in charge which is wonderful. 1965 to 2025. No diamonds but lots of memories in a long marriage.

Good morning,or rather good evening . It’s been very hot here. I have shrouded some of the pots in pink winter protection! To stop the leaves burning etc.

First mug of coffee drunk and now it’s on with the day. It’s going to be a hot week. My crowd-farming box of fruit includes a small and very welcome watermelon

Book group in the morning where we all talk about the books we are presenting, it’s a browsing group, bit like a friend’s private library. It’s always good when books you like are liked by others. And even better when you come home with something new to read.Fire of Joy is my daily starter of a poem.

Goodbye to Mister Bisto. Diagnosed with bone cancer 10 days ago and it was aggressive. He went with dignity and with peace and with his tail still wagging. Not in terrible pain and unable to move or eat. We will miss him more than words can say.

Sorry to hear that but yes, dwelling on it doesn’t help much. I’m being incredibly lazy today as a way of having a break.Tomorrow hope to do a bit of gardening, always good for the spirit. Here’s an amateur photo of a bit of the courtyard when it looked lovely. Time passes and so do the plants.
Court yard garden. Window and bench and Spanish gorse and daisies and pots

It’s very warm here in SW France, about 24 in the sheltered courtyard. I have been tidying the wayward patch and shoving in bulbs that were in pots. The grass needs cutting and I dare say some plants need watering. But the knees have protested so it is cup of tea time.

Here are some hellebores that have been glorious this year. Even if every bit of them is poisonous they are still wonderful.

About to read Wild Twin by Jeff Young. A walk across Europe and I have a mini obsession with those. I follow the route and imagine it all. As he writes, ‘I began to dream of places I had been to and could no longer go.’

I did have a wardrobe of turbans. Rather liked them. Friend made me a turban stand so I have 3 favourites on that as a reminder. On other news, oncology checkup today and all well. He was pleased. 1 more year with no event as he puts it and we can all relax a bit.

Made two Christmas cakes and am hoping they will be ok as they cooked far quicker than the recipe time. It’s one I’ve used forever but perhaps I’m getting forgetful? Filthy page shows what a messy cook I am . Margaret Costa Seasonal Food, from the late 60s.

Jerusalem artichokes picked from the field where they are a blight on cereal crops.Cousin of sunflowers and Jerusalem is a misheard girasole.Every scrap of root will make another plant and that’s how they spread and ruin the soil for the farmers.

On this book there is a section on historical fiction in discussion of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Isabella of Angoulême. I am the author of the latter. It’s interesting that historical fiction is no longer a dirty word for academic historians. Hilary Mantel said it was like porn for them.

Just finishing the series by Andre Taylor that begins with The Ashes of London and then onto this , which I am looking forward to. The Andrew Taylor series has been full on immersive,6 books on the trot. Know much more about Charles 11 and London then than I ever did. Powerful historical fiction.
