Playing Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave with Japanese audio and for some reason I find it jarring when Theodora calls her pirate boyfriend Bonaparte but his name in the English text is Bonaventure. I'm sure this happens all the time when localizing games but I've never really noticed it before.

Metal Slug & Metal Slug 2 (1996, 1998) Had an itch to blast some nazis so I loaded up the PS2 version of the Metal Slug Anthology on my AYN Thor. Never had enough skill or enough quarters to beat them on the Neo Geo cabinet at my local pizza place as a kid so it was fun to finally see them through.

There's an option to save your own copy of a doc that has been shared with you via hyperlink. I've done it many times with like video game spreadsheets that people have shared on reddit. Might be more complicated with a private doc I guess, so apologies if you've explored that already.

It was kind of an impulse buy because I am sick of 3.5mm headphones that cut out when you move the cable wrong so I just searched for USB-C IEMs on amazon and the Moondrop CHU II DSP were among the top results. I had heard good things about Moondrop before and I liked the anime drawing on the box.

Super Mario 64 (1996) I've played this game a handful of times throughout my life but this is the first time I've ever actually earned all 120 stars and visited Yoshi on top of Peach's castle. With a mod that adds analog camera control this game actually holds up really well in 2026!

I tried sticker bombing my AYN Thor and wasn’t happy with how it turned out but I saw somebody on reddit who had an image printed on nice glossy paper at Staples and stuck it inside the TPU shell so I did that and I think it turned out great. You can fit 3 of these on a single sheet for under $3.

Metroid Fusion (GBA, 2002) This game blew me away. More polished than Super Metroid but also a bit more linear, which I liked. It has the same feeling of exploration with less aimless backtracking to look for walls I can blow up with my latest gadget. It's more focused and confident in its design.

Star Fox 64 3D (2011) I never played a Star Fox game as a kid so when Nintendo announced the new remake I wanted to go back and try out the SNES game (unplayable dogshit) and the 3DS remaster of Star Fox 64 (fine). I can see the appeal but I think the game feels bad to play and I didn't enjoy it.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim (2003) I love Ys games because they ask nothing more than that I save the world by running around and hitting things with a sword while listening to music produced by one of the best sound teams to ever do it. I greatly enjoyed this pleasantly uncomplicated action RPG.

Shadow of the Colossus (2018) Simply a masterpiece. I want the platinum trophy eventually so after finishing up the NG+ run I started last year I immediately started clearing Normal Time Attack trials in NG+2. I think I could be happy replaying this game every year until my hands stop working.

Nintendo’s first party studios are usually terrible at including quality of life and accessibility features but Monolith nailed it with the volume sliders in Xenoblade Chronicles: DE. Too many games ruin the sound mix in cutscenes when you adjust the gameplay volume sliders but XBC does it right. 🙏

Pokémon Pokopia (2026) I expected Pokopia to be good based on Omega Force's work on the Dragon Quest Builders games, but they really knocked this one out of the park. Simply delightful. I rolled credits back in April but I still check in often to build new stuff and hang with my Pokémon buddies.

I've finished ~16 retro games on my handheld devices since late 2024 and I'm so glad I finally found a way to enjoy these games because many of them really hold up well and are a delight to kick back and play outside in the evening or in a cozy chair away from my desk. PS: Metroid games are SICK.
