In 2022 in Oakland, one of the most significant RCV errors occurred. The wrong person was elected, even after certification. Arend presents about what went wrong and how better voting methods could have prevented this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7c7...

Did you know most Ranked Choice Voting fans can’t explain how the system works? We scoured the internet for a clear, simple video explainer on RCV that didn’t gloss over important details or get key facts wrong — and we couldn't find one. So we set out to do better. 🧵 ⬇️

Ranked Choice Voting allows voters to vote their true preferences. But it has a fundamental flaw. It does NOT fix a two party system. That's right, Ranked Choice Voting still has a two party drift. That's because it can ignore relevant rankings that could have made a difference. 🧵 ⬇️

Our incredible California chapter is hard at work. They have seen how the top-two California primary for governor is causing controversy due to the potential for vote-splitting. But they are not just sitting around. They are working on a solution!

110

Equal Vote Coalition @equalvote.bsky.social · 23/04/2026

With its problems laid bare by the California Governor's race it's important to remember that Top Two is still more accurate than traditional primaries and a general with one candidate from each party -- but there's definitely room for improvement.

Voters are dispersed in a complex and nuanced way. But elected officials are polarized. This is directly a result of the way that Americans typically vote. We can fix this with a better voting method such as Approval Voting or STAR Voting. Source: imgur.com/gallery/cali...

Most people hear "one person, one vote," and think of the right to vote itself, but that was just the first step. The fight for an equal vote has been a long one. The idea is that your vote should be just as powerful as mine, no matter how many candidates are on your side. 1/3🧵

100

Equal Vote Coalition @equalvote.bsky.social · 25/11/2025

Coalitions that run multiple candidates risk splitting the vote and spoiling the election. As a result, voters face immense pressure to vote for the front-runner on their side. It's a race to the bottom. 2/3 🧵

100

Equal Vote Coalition @equalvote.bsky.social · 25/11/2025

Our current voting method is inherently unequal for voters who have more good candidates on their side, and this inequality has decidedly negative consequences: outsized influence of money in politics, hyper-partisan rancor, and widespread electoral disenchantment. 1/3 🧵

Equal Vote Coalition @equalvote.bsky.social · 20/11/2025

The fight for the equal vote has been a long one and gaining the right to vote was just the first step. Vote-splitting inherent in the current system is the cause of many problems, but we have the solution! (1/3)🧵

Most elections will still be using the outdated Choose One system, where vote splitting causes some people’s vote to matter more than others. At Equal Vote, we advocate for STAR Voting because everyone’s vote should have equal weight. Learn more at equal.vote/star

How would this be different under a better voting method such as STAR Voting? Because voters can score all of the candidates on a scale of 0-5 with STAR Voting, candidates would be incentivized to appeal to all of the voters, not just their base. 🧵 ⬇️

Equal Vote Coalition @equalvote.bsky.social · 20/10/2025

In California, a nonpartisan primary will take place in June, in which the top two contenders will advance to a November election. Dozens of candidates have declared interest. Since California uses Choose-One voting, vote-splitting will be likely. 🧵 ⬇️
