Happy (?) New U.S. Fiscal Year! As usual, the U.S. doesn’t have a budget so we may see a government shutdown in December -- not coincidentally, after the November election. Meanwhile a Super El Niño is peaking in the Pacific Ocean. www.npr.org/2026/10/01/n...

Studying this super El Niño could save lives. NOAA is scaling back research
A powerful El Niño is already influencing extreme weather around the planet. During the last strong El Niño, federal agencies ramped up research in the hope of improving weather forecasts. This year, ...

Thanks to Paula Noonan for highlighting in her column the party-protection bill HB25-1315 that is unfair to voters and, I believe, unconstitutional. As Secretary of State, I would refuse to hold these one-party elections! I proposed a constitutional solution in the Colorado Sun in January 2024.

The "Blue Book" (and it is quite the tome) should have arrived in your mailbox. It contains info to help you decide on ballot measures and judicial retentions. If you want to find out what candidates appear on your ballot, your county clerk’s website should have a sample ballot.

At the U.N. on Tuesday, Trump claimed again that he “won in a landslide. We won in a giant landslide…” False. False. False. Trump did not even get a majority of the popular vote in the 2024 election. www.osvnews.com/trump-tells-...

Jeffrey Rosen, U.S. Constitution Week’s keynote speaker, bemoaned the rise of negative polarization – when people are more worried about beating the other side than supporting their own side. Thanks to Katie Ellis and other volunteers who organized the celebration!

I enjoyed riding the Bustang last week. The driver put $300 of fuel in the tank. With diesel over $6/gallon, the bus got about 48 gallons of fuel.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico have been banned from the White House and are not happy. I know how they feel. I was not included in CPR’s Colorado Matters episode on the Secretary of State candidates. When I asked why, the response was CPR’s resources are “capped.”

Colorado Forward Party Chair Dave Ryan and I did planks at Independence Pass. The person who took our photo had just seen a bear in a tree in downtown Aspen. Evidently, bears in trees is an Aspen thing! We saw a bear in Aspen too (and a rugby tournament).

The U.S. Constitution was signed on this date in 1787 and has been amended 27 times. Section 2 of the 14th Amendment penalizes states that deny the right to vote for state legislators. CO will be in violation in 2027 because HB25-1315 disenfranchises voters based on party affiliation.

Today’s Colorado Matters: the Sec of State race. The County Clerks Assoc ED called the Republican a “nonserious” candidate, and CO has not elected back-to-back Democrats for SoS in almost 100 years, but the host never mentioned my candidacy! Please complain to CPR and/or donate to my campaign.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that the U.S. Postal Service may NOT change mail-ballot procedures this close to the 2026 election. None of Trump’s appointees, including Coloradan Neil Gorsuch, supported the USPS/government’s request. Kavanaugh concurred. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

The Heritage Foundation ranked CO #38 in election integrity – easy to remember because CO was state #38 to join the union. Our universal mail-ballot (aka absentee) elections and use of “RCV” dropped us in the rankings. I support mail ballots and better voting methods.

In all but 2 even-year elections (2004 and 2012) this century, Americans have voted for party-control change at the federal level. Chuck Todd mentioned this factoid in our Meet the Forwardists event on Thursday. I made a table (accurate, I hope) to show the changes.

We are slipping further into polarization. [A solution] requires institutions to get more comfortable with self-criticism. When you adopt this bunker mentality, it feeds back into the sense that these institutions are unaccountable to the public. - Tyler Austin Harper www.npr.org/2026/08/18/n...

People often ask, “Are you having fun?” It’s a strange question. This campaign is about getting my message out, giving voters a nonpartisan-type SoS option, and winning! Having fun is taken for granted. As Emma Goldman reportedly said, “If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of this revolution.”
