Messed about with my houseplants all day 🪴

7 house plants in front of windows - 2 in big pots on the floor & 5 on a long, low table - a box of succulents, African violets & green houseplants.

A variety of succulents in pots on top of a bookshelf. There are watercolor paintings (made by me!) on the wall above the plants.

Husband’s parents sent me amaryllis bulbs. They are family heirlooms, cared for by his family as they bloom and go dormant for decades. They originally belonged to an Aunt who passed away years ago. I’m nervous about taking on the mantle of responsibility, but they’re doing great so far!

Two giant amaryllis in bloom on a kitchen counter in a rectangular Talavera pottery container. The flowers on one are bright red. The flowers on the other one are white with red stripes. The bulb ends are just barely visible in the dirt. The stems and flowers are about 2.5 ft tall.

Spent a gorgeous, peaceful day at the zoo

A sunny winter day at the Albuquerque zoo - a family of hippos are napping in a pond, their heads resting on the sloped surface at the edge of the water, their bodies mostly submerged. The baby hippo is safely between the parents. The sky is very blue, but there aren’t any leaves on the trees because it is winter.

Sometimes all you can do is observe the action from a safe place. I took this photo of a mama gorilla & her baby at our zoo. She climbed up to the top of a tree branch structure so she could watch the construction on the other side of the wall.

I haven’t been on social media much in June. Sending both of our kids off to college in August is going to be a huge change, so I’m really focused on my family this summer. I’m sending love out to you all though! How are you doing? Did I miss any big news? Also, Lily says hi! (once she wakes up)

I seriously considered not putting up our Pride flag this year, because the world is a scary, but my husband reminded me that we put it up to show our kids & their friends that we are a safe place for them. Not feeling safe ourselves makes broadcasting that idea even more important.

Despite my desire to have a productive day, the dog has decided that this cozy rainy morning is perfect for catching up on sleep. She hasn’t even eaten or gone out for her morning walk yet! It’s 2 hours later than usual! I guess we’re just to snuggle all morning. It’s out of my hands.

My wildflower pollinator bed has so many sprouts! Some of last year’s plants were perennials & the annuals must have dropped seeds. I can’t wait to see what it looks like this year! (The big plant at the end is a bee balm that I just planted.)
