A Dublin #painting "The Long Hall" I painted because, it's one my favourite pubs, sitting inside it anyway but it's particularly impressive on the outside too. Now I just need to paint the rest of my favourite pubs in Dublin. I may be a while. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Portrait format in acrylics on canvas. Narrow 4-storey building, 2 window bays wide, with dark wine pub front at street level. Wine and white striped canopies are over the doors on either side of the large central window which is split in half vertically. Suggestions of figures can be seen through the main window. On the fascia in ornate font in red is: The Long Hall. Each of the 2 windows on all 3 upper stories has cream panels surrounding it which join the panels of the window above and are all decorated with maroon stripes and spots, and mini canopies above and a short striped sill underneath. The upper stories are a light red brick rendered in pink with a grey capstone along the top. The building adjoined to the left is an orange-rendered red brick period building with decorative blue brick stripe adjoining each upper story window, and a shop front of dark grey around a brown door. The building adjoined on the right is a modern pale grey block with larger windows and a dark glass door. Both buildings are also 4 storeys and a little higher than the pub. Sky is pale blue. Path is creamy yellow with maroon kerb slightly sloping down from right to left. Road surface is violet with white solid and dashed lines. Signed bottom right in very dark blue on the violet road, Liam Daly

A west of Ireland #painting, "Connemara Waters" came out of an idyllic day cycling in south Connemara when I stopped for a while to look across the bogs to the mountains of north Connemara. And to watch a family of swans because how can you not? #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #MountainMonday
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. The bottom two-thirds of the scene below the horizon is a bog of grasses and vegetation of greens, oranges, yellows and blues. The bog is laced with horizontal strips of very pale lilac water, some with grey and dark rocks protruding from them. Along the horizon is a low distant ridge of a green hill punctuated with dots of pale houses and dark green trees, that starts to rise up towards the right edge. Behind it is a long low purple hill on the left half, and further behind across the whole painting are 4 large pyramidal mountains of different blues, stacked behind each other getting paler as they recede in the distance. The sky is a very pale smoky teal. The water pool along the full width of the bottom edge is an even paler lilac, almost white, but with lots of short little horizontal rippling strokes of pale aqua blue and purple. Signed bottom right in dark blue, right where the pale water changes to purple, Liam Daly.

Thank you very much. I do like a soft grey day in Autumn, but those pure blue sky days with the sun shining through the last leaves I find irresistible.

From my ongoing series of autumnal trees is the #painting "Golden Leaves IV". This was a tree I would see when I had a little dog and we'd walk just to enjoy seeing the leaves on and off the trees. There'd be the odd jump into piles of leaves too, though the dog just watched. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Silhouette of a tree's branches with some autumnal leaves, as viewed from underneath, against a rich blue into turquoise sky. Most leaves are gone so the tree is a scattering of roughly painted jagged shaped yellow leaves with olive and ochre shading, towards the outer edges mostly, and deep orange leaves mostly in the upper centre, with some white or red details but mostly the tree is a network of unleafed black branches coming off its three central vertical branches which grow from where the trunk splits off picture left of centre at the bottom up at a slight angle towards the centre of the top. The blue of the sky is a slight gradient of darker higher up and lighter in the bottom. Signed bottom right in dark blue, Liam Daly

A west of Ireland #painting "Burren Walls" came out of several trips to the karst landscape of County Clare where I was entranced by its fields of stone. And I do like a wall. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. On flat land of limestone karst rendered in colours of lilac, pale blue and grey, with black crevices and white highlights, is a stone wall running horizontally across the full width of the painting, with the distinctive burren stones, narrow and slanted, with crevices running lengthways. In the distance is another wall running across the full width of the painting, and distant dark lines indicate more further back before the horizon of a muted blue low tree-line with a couple of buildings dotted in among them. Further back on the left are paler blue trees or hills in the distance. There is a small tree with a leaning straight thin almost white trunk midway back on the right, with a dense small clump of dark olive foliage leaning to the right and a green bush around its base. Some flecks of light olive flora litter the fields of stone. Sky is white fluffy clouds on pale blue. Signed bottom right in dark blue, Liam Daly

A west of Ireland #painting, "Mayo Bog" I painted following a day where I had cycled north through Ballycroy and kept stopping just to enjoy the bog. There's not a lot else to say except I think we're quite lucky in Ireland to have the bogs that we do. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. In expressive brush marks are a yellow sky with orange under-painting breaking through, a peaked patchy dark hill of oranges and blues sitting on the horizon to the right with some lime green fields at its base, and the edge of a distant blue hill on the left edge. The rest of the painting, the bottom two-thirds, being the flatness of the yellow ochre bog running across the full width of the painting, and in the foreground cut away revealing the maroon cut turf, with grasses, some long, and bog plants in front of it along the bottom rendered in blues, oranges, yellows, and whites. Some white is on top of the flat stretch of the bog across the middle, perhaps flowers, and some dark lines suggestive of tracts or cuts. Signed top left in dark blue, Liam Daly

A #painting. "Mug" was painted in celebration of my then mug of preference. Later the handle smashed into several pieces so I stuck it back together with Sugru, continuing to drink from it for years more before retiring it to the shelf of former mugs that mind my paintbrushes. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Portrait format in loose style in acrylics on mat board. Painting of off-white cream mug, heavily stained by tea on the inside and showing knifed texture on the outside. Handle is on the right. The mug is a straight cylinder except for the top half where it curves out slightly to a greater width. Edges of the mug are all outlined in heavy uneven black-blue lines. Background is painterly brushed and split into 2 colours: magenta in the upper section down to just below halfway - right at the bottom of the handle behind the mug - and violet in the lower section, suggestive of a table surface. Painting was photographed before I added my signature.

A Dublin mixed media #painting. "Christchurch from the Quays" was painted because I loved the site and the views ever since I visited it in the 1970s when the protests were happening about the then planned Civic Offices. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Scape
Landscape format. Black ink line and colour water media on paper. Foreground is top of balustraded humpbacked O'Donovan Rossa Bridge showing 2 of its arches underneath painted black. Its stones are pale blue, lilac and white. Past the purple river wall on the right is the 4-story end building of Merchants Quay in lighter purple with some blue stones and black windows. On the left is the end of the modern Civic Offices, with rich blue squares of glass and a supporting isolated columnar pillar. Through the gap between the two buildings is the cathedral with square steeple at the top of the grassed and treed hill, in a mixture of pale blue and lilac with green-grey roof, and around the arched black windows is yellow detailing. A #painting from the northwest of Ireland, "Benbulben and Benwiskin" I painted because of what a magnificent sight Benwiskin is, and the shapes of Sligo in general make me happy. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics. A painting of horizontal features. Across the bottom is a strip of orange grass punctuated lightly with some dark blue and purple blades and some yellow flowers. It has a jagged top edge with some individual blades extending. Beyond it are 3 horizontal strips of water separated by narrow maroon strips of rocks. Each body of water gets a darker shade of blue the further away it is. A headland comes out from the right edge halfway across the picture, and it, like a headland on the far side of all the waters, is a series of horizontal colours of wine and greens, with the far one topped by graphical slivers of yellow and orange. Behind that is a sloping pale green hill on the left with fields of slightly different bright shades of green radiating down. Behind it is a sliver of a very dark blue hill. Then, dominating the picture is the monolith of Benbulben, a curved rectangle coming out from the right three-quarters of the way across the picture, with in the space to the left behind it the sharp peak of Benwiskin in pale blue rising up. The sky is a very pale turquoise. Signed bottom right in red on the orange grass, Liam Daly.

A Dublin #painting "Liffey Clouds" is for people who like the capital city's River Liffey. Or clouds, I suppose. I didn't really paint it for anyone; I painted it because this is one of the many views of my home city I like - even if it's been changed since I painted this. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Portrait format in acrylics on mat board. View from centre of Ha'penny Bridge east along River Liffey. Top half all sky, white fluffy clouds, with touches of yellow, on blue sky - darker in the gaps at the top, where more sky is covered with cloud, paler and almost cloudless close to horizon. Water is rippling blues with white reflections, all in short horizontal strokes. Square tower office block of Liberty Hall on left with its alternating bands of dark blue windows and off-white concrete, topped with small pale green hat with zig-zag-brim. Closer is a tall wide glass and concrete building of O'Connell Bridge House on the right behind the 4-storey white and red-brick buildings of Aston Quay. Trees are across the street from those buildings, overlooking the river wall and dark shadow below. The flat almost white road bridge of O'Connell Bridge is in the centre with its three arches, two piers, and balustrade along the top. The small green dome of the Custom House behind it is partially hidden by the black metal lattice railway Loopline Bridge. The dark blue blocks of glass of the IFSC (International Financial Services Centre) is behind the Custom House. A flat-ish orange leisure boat is moored neared the foreground on the left down steps from boardwalk under full green foliage trees that line the north bank quays of Bachelor's Walk and Eden quay beyond it. Another west of Ireland #painting "Kylemore Boats" came out of a day cycling in north Connemara where my bike and I were discussing how lucky we were. The sun was on its way down so before cycling on the length of the lake and on to Killary I resolved to paint this view later. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. View of a lake that covers the complete width of the bottom edge of the painting and stretches long away from viewer, with mountain slopes of green on its right side, light green close to viewer and darker green for a slope further away behind it in shadow. At the far end of the lake is a jagged paler grey-ish green line of mountains with a peak by the right edge and a noticeable drop to a high gap in the middle. At the bottom of the far end of the lake, by the water's edge, is a low strip of land of 3 layers of greens suggesting trees and sun on a low hill. In the left foreground are a clump of trees, thick with mostly very dark green foliage with touches of dark blue, but a large section is clear showing a load of fat twisting trunks and/or branches which I have painted in mixes of purples and reds and browns and greens, with orange on the right and upper sides where the sun hits, and blues on the shadow sides. Moored beside and under the trees are two small rowing boats, pale blue or maybe white in shadow. The water is short rippling strokes of greens and teals and blues, radiating out from where the trees and boats are in the left foreground until far away the water is darker, except right at the far end of the lake where there is a single broad very pale blue almost white strip. The sky is a painterly very pale blue with a couple of whisked in slight hints of white clouds. Signed bottom right in dark blue, Liam Daly

A west Cork #painting "Red Strand Rocks" was painted one magical sunny day sitting for hours with my bicycle on a bluff above a beach. At one point mid-painting I lay down and closed my eyes for a pleasant sleep. Afterwards I cycled to Clonakilty and handed over the painting. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. The blue water of a bay comes in from the left between a headland along the horizon and in the foreground rocks in a series of strata extending into water. The headland juts out from right, has green fields and hedgerows tumbling down to jagged dark rocky edge by water. White tip of lighthouse peeps over left end slope, and a long white house is low down close to the water at the right edge of the painting. Rock strata are blue, grey, dark wine and purple with the lines running from the bottom straight up the centre of the picture breaking up in the water. They run from the entire width of the bottom edge of the painting and extend up loosely in a triangle. Sand is to left of rocks and a grass-topped ochre-grey bluff to right. Sky is a painterly yellow with paler indications of clouds. Signed top left, Liam Daly

A Wexford #painting, "Kilmore Quay". I love this street. Not because of the thatched roofs, but because of the whitewashed walls and the angles they're at. A great street to walk along in the brilliant sun and have chips at the end looking out at the Saltee Islands. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Scape
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Under a cloudless sky of turquoise we're looking up the left side of a street and four detached white-washed thatched cottages. From the left edge, past a balustrade of orange and pink on the edge of a car-park is the nearest cottage which dominates the picture. Two stories high, it is L-shaped so faces both street and viewer. Shadows are blue, rest of cottage walls are brilliant white. Roof is an old thatch so is dark, closer to a red than a yellow, and has large dormer window. Cottage beyond to the right is mostly white of 2-storey gable end, and just yellow thatch is visible on cottages further on. Road is light grey-green in sun and dark turquoise in shadows stretching across the road. A wire arcs high along the left side of the toad from pole to pole, and an orange line of maybe a kerb runs along the right side. Signed bottom right in dark blue, Liam Daly

A mixed media #painting. One of Dublin's most loved buildings. "Sunlight Chambers", as seen from along the edge of Grattan Bridge's Hippocamp lamps, I painted because few sights in Ireland can instantly convert me back into childhood than seeing its ceramic friezes close up. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Portrait format in black ink and watercolour on paper. Starting from the left edge is a view along the top of the green metal rail of Grattan bridge showing half a dozen copper lamps, on their Hippocampus stands of metal painted green, almost directly in line so there is little to no space between them as they recede. Beyond them is a building, four stories, on a corner, with side of 2 windows width directly facing viewer, and a short angled side of one window width at the left corner edge behind lamp-posts. Lowest story is mostly stone, in pale blues and lilacs, with arches above the windows and a decorative blue medallion between the two arches facing viewer. Above arches and rest of building is yellow with wide figurative bands of blue above and below the 2nd story. Windows are made up of little black panes - narrow, twinned, and arched on 3rd story, topped with triangles on 2nd story. Window arches, triangles, and side supporting columns are blue. Another west of Ireland #painting. "Dooghill" came out of cycling in west Mayo one day after leaving the Greenway and Clew Bay, and going north of Mulranny towards Ballycroy. This was a view west over Ballacragher Bay that had me in shape heaven. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Foreground of 4 small rough undulating lime green and yellow fields separated by uneven dry-stone walls that run at angles to the edges of the painting, before beyond them is a body of water, very pale blue almost white with touches of yellow, running the full width of the painting horizontally with 2 dark olive flat islets and on the far side is a horizontal strip of yellow land with pale blue low flat-ish hills behind on the left, while on the right is a higher pale purple-pink rounded hill. Further back in the distance in between is a flatish rounded pale blue mountain. Sky is pale cloudy lilac. Left foreground has dark green bushes, while on the right just past stone wall are low trees of dark blue and purple with holes through which we see the water. Signed bottom right in red, Liam Daly

Back to an Irish landscape #painting "Muckish from Falcarragh" Once upon a time I regularly had a 12 km cycle to buy milk when I'd made a pot of tea and realised I was without milk - again. This was a view on the rush back to the waiting pot. I lived in a cottage beside the gap. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Panorama format in painterly acrylics on canvas. A whale-shaped mountain of blue with purple sits against a painterly canary yellow sky. In front runs a brown-green lilac ridge, fading to the right edge with a pass a little left of the centre of the painting through to the left edge of the mountain. In front of the ridge is a strip of bog then a road left to right dotted with white cottages between the line of dark bushes and trees. From there about two dozen green fields run parallel down a slope towards the viewer, separated by small dark hedgerows, until they go out of sight behind a near hedgerow of dark blue and purple which runs across the full width of the painting and marks the edge of 2 warm green fields which run horizontally sloping up to the right a little and separated by smaller similarly coloured hedgerow. An Irish #painting "To The Beach" came as much from a love of places where people could be avoided, because people, they're the worst. Specifically this is that part of south Mayo protected by Killary harbour, the ocean and the mountains, as you look across to north Connemara. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in loose painterly acrylics on canvas panel. By a patch of gravel in the foreground, is an open gateway between concrete posts in a dry stone wall through which we see a view down into a green field, following a stone track, with grass down the middle, to a five-bar gate to another field of brighter green surrounded by stone walls. Beyond it lower down is the yellow of the beach. Past that a maroon hill slopes down from the left and the glassy blue-grey ocean is on the right with a couple of dark long slim islets of maroon. Along the horizon is a low ridge of mid-blue hills with hints of beach edging in a few places, and behind it are gentle mountains of paler blue-lilac. Sky is loose and wild mixtures of greys with a few touches of orange and of green. Photo was taken before my signature was added.

An Irish #painting. "Sligo Sunset" came out of a time I was in the northwest feeling alone and happy as I looked across Sligo Bay from Strandhill at Blackrock lighthouse and beyond to the glory of Donegal. The sun was going down but it came up again the next day. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Wide panoramic format in acrylics. View across lilac water past a narrow strip of black rocks reaching out from the right. A white and black lighthouse stands centre-right close to far edge of the water where behind it there is a low strip of land running horizontally across the whole painting, slightly higher on right tapering down to slightly lower at the left edge, made of a patchwork of olive green fields, and topped with a line of dark trees that are silhouetted against in the distance a large long blue shape of a mountain ridge that tapers down at either end. Behind it the sky is pale yellow and above the mountain the sky is in rising bands of orange, pink and lilac. Signed bottom right in dark blue, Liam Daly

Through the gap between the two buildings is the cathedral with square steeple at the top of the grassed and treed hill, in a mixture of pale blue and lilac with green-grey roof, and around the arched black windows is yellow detailing. And here is that painting earlier on - after the rain washed it all off the canvas leaving me to go back the next day and start again. It wasn't as wet the next day. #SpéirGhorm
Landscape format canvas with very pale watery marks of red and green and long diagonal streaks. No discernible picture of anything beyond - maybe - a presence of very pale red across the middle where the quay wall would be and, at a push, hints of the row of houses above it.

A #painting from everyday Ireland, "Sheep, Stone Wall II". If you see sheep every day, that is. Like I used to, when I had a little dog and we'd walk for miles stopping every so often to let the sheep look at us as we'd talk about the countryside and how yellow it all seemed. #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear
Square canvas in acrylics. Against a background of all golden yellow in varying painterly shades, some more orange, are four sheep. They are white with navy, almost black, heads, legs and shadows underneath. No eyes can be made out but their ears project out sideways. All are standing except the nearest which is sitting facing towards the viewer. The wool is lilac in the middle with touches of pink as it transitions from the white on top in the sun to navy in shadow and when dark wool. Wool color edges are not blended but hard in a stylised fashion. Behind them in the mid-distance is a low dry-stone wall of navy and white stones, with seven navy fence posts rising at intervals from it. In the foreground are some darker low tufts of a green created by a dark blue washed over with yellow. Photo taken before my signature was added.

I don't mind at all, thank you very much. Can't say I know how I did the water. I often have my head buried in close as I pull paint around for ages, and sometimes when I'm finally happy with the marks I've no idea how I got there and try as I might I can't replicate it.

My #painting "The Long Walk II" was painted when me and my bicycle sat in Galway by Claddagh Quay. Rain then softly landed on my face. And made the painting look funky. Then it got much heavier and washed all the paint off the canvas. So I returned the next day and started over. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. View across rich blue rippling water to narrow band across the centre of the painting consisting of a street of about two dozen terraced houses, the leftmost being 4 stories and the rest a mixture of 2 and 3 stories high, above a band of dark blue that is a quay wall. Windows and doors are dark simple soft rectangles. Houses are single colours of, from left to right, blue, 5 white 2-story houses, blue, yellow, pale green, brown, white, maroon, red, pale green, white, blue, brown, yellow, blue, yellow, white, and yellow. Slated roofs are dark blue. Sky is stormy yellow mixed in with patches of green and red, dark in patches near the top, brightest at the bottom above the roofs. The water closest to the dark quay wall has less rippling and shows a dark shimmering reflection of the houses. Foreground includes some grass and flagstones of curved quayside on left.
