BREAKING NEWS: Environmental Groups Sue Illegal Data Center Power Plant Projects in San Antonio“Communities should not have to suffer excessive amounts of air pollution from data centers and power plants that fail to follow the Clean Air Act,” said Mary Greene, Director of Enforcement at the Environmental Integrity Project. “We're suing Vantage and VoltaGrid because industrial development at this scale requires public input and stringent permits that prioritize health and air quality over the unbridled race for an economic edge.”

EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a newly proposed “waters of the United States,” or WOTUS, rule last week that removes federal protections for 94% of wetlands and one-third of U.S. streams. The new proposal is even less protective than the rule Trump proposed almost a year ago.

Recently, Inside Climate News analyzed EPA enforcement data and found that the agency’s numbers can be misleading. Civil lawsuits filed on behalf of the EPA have steadily declined since the 2010 midterms and enforcement activity has nearly stopped under the current administration.

In 2024, the Biden Administration strengthened the Clean Air Act, implementing nine rules to reduce toxic air pollutant emissions, including the HON rule which reduced emissions of ethylene oxide and vinyl chloride from petrochemical facilities.

Since 2009, EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program has required large polluters to report their emissions, making this information available to the public. In 2025, the Trump Administration put the program on hold and announced plans to stop collecting data from most industrial sources.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is accepting comments until Aug. 4 on Guardian Pipeline's application to build the Guardian 3 Pipeline Expansion project. The project would entail building the 42.6-mile Joliet Loop traveling through Kendall and DeKalb Counties in Illinois, the 25.5-mile Sycamore Loop traveling through Dekalb and McHenry Counties in Illinois, and modifying existing and building new compressor stations in Illinois and Wisconsin. If constructed, this project could increase natural gas transport capacity by 536 million cubic feet per day.

A Floodlight and The Guardian analysis found Louisiana's public air monitors are often miles from major industrial polluters and don't test for some of the most hazardous chemicals. Many of the state's biggest polluters lack nearby monitoring for the pollutants they emit.

Last month, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called for blocking new data centers in rural areas. He proposed a regulatory plan requiring data centers to add power generation, cover infrastructure costs, reuse water, and meet setback rules to reduce impacts on nearby communities.
