Finally watched “Backrooms.” I’m glad it exists. I think it’s really cool whenever a creative low budget film gets a lot of attention. That being said, I wish I liked the movie better. It was just fine. But I’m also probably not the intended audience (I am almost 40) & that’s okay!

Another one from my WIP, Obsidian Streets. The band is in the recording studio and Charles is driving everyone nuts with his perfectionism. #WIPSnips

The band played the last riff together eight times and then held out the final note until Charles signaled that the song was over. He gave the thumbs up to the engineer, who promptly stopped the tape.

Thomas slumped over his drum set and mumbled "Jesus Christ, can we move on now?"

Christopher balanced his bass guitar on his lap and shook out his hands, trying to keep his wrists from cramping up.

"Yeah man, let's play another song, I think we got it."

Kenneth's voice came through everyone's headphones as he talked into a microphone behind the sound booth.

"That was great," he said, trying to stay positive and professional. "Are we ready to move on, boys?"

Charles looked around their glass case of a recording booth and saw his fellow bandmates beginning to nod. He raised his hand and shook his head, walking over to the microphone in front of Robbie.

"I think we should just do that one more time," he said.

Printed out the draft of my novel & put it in a binder so I can mark all over it w/ red pens & highlighters. Something about seeing it all printed out is both daunting & kind of exciting. My goal is to get thing to the point where I feel okay letting a few friends read it. We’ll see how that goes…

Okay, I’ll do one of these today! Here’s an excerpt from my WIP, “Obsidian Streets.” It’s an interaction between two record store employees. #WIPSnips

Hunter had dark circles under his eyes and was leaning against the counter, propping himself up by his elbows. His unruly hair hung in his face and he wore an old LCD Soundsystem hoodie. When Sydney entered the room, she was surprised that there was no music on. For once, Hunter was choosing silence.

"So," Sydney began. "I'm not answering the phone for a bit. The creeper is calling again, you deal with him if you want to. I'm tired of hearing about that dude's dick."

"Right, okay, yeah that sucks," Hunter said. Sydney waited for some sort of witty retort or sarcastic comment but it didn't come. He seemed distracted.

"Everything okay?" she asked.

"What?" Hunter looked at her as if he just realized she was in the room. "Oh, yeah. Yeah, I'm fine, I just had, um, a late night. I stayed up too late. Yeah."

Trying to motivate myself by printing out this draft of my novel so I can put it in a binder & write all over it. I don’t have a working printer so I have to go pick it up at Office Depot & I’m feeling kinda mortified about going to pick it up. I hope they don’t read it. It’s not good. 😂

25 years ago today, I woke up to the sound of my M&M phone ringing. It was my best friend yelling “Wassup!” the way she always did. My mom came in the room, telling me to get off the phone & look at the TV. We watched the news & debated whether or not I should go to school. I did & it was weird.

Some thoughts from my Booklife career book on being generous to yourself if you're a writer who needs that today because of not writing or not reaching a goal.

You have new priorities or responsibilities. We all experience life changes, and when we do, we have to modify our goals to reflect those changes. Each change carries with it a range of pitfalls and opportunities. When I quit my day job and began to live off my book and reviewing income I took advantage of that opportunity to make my goals more ambitious, because I had more time to work on them. But one thing I discovered is that without the structure of the day job I
also had to be more focused and work harder than I ever had before. Because I was used to the time it took me to do things with the day job, I had no idea how long things took when I could work on them 24–7 — or how important taking breaks would become. As a result, I missed several book deadlines before I adjusted to the new rhythms of my life — and had to go back and adjust my goals yet again.

You haven’t made progress on the tasks associated with the goals. While you’re busy berating yourself for being lazy, maybe something else is going on. Maybe you really don’t like doing the tasks associated with your goals. In fact, you dislike them so much, you can’t bring yourself to follow through in any consistent way. At that point,you have to change your goals or you’ll continue to be frozen. (If, on the other hand, you haven’t even attempted the tasks, maybe you just need a swift kick in the pants. After all, as the Romanians say, “A kick in the pants is just another step forward.”)

You haven’t met any of your goals. Sometimes elements of what you need to happen to reach your goals will be beyond your control. If you don’t meet your goals in a reasonable time try to be patient and give yourself a few more months or even a year. Then consider either re-evaluating your goals entirely or amending them to be more modest. If you take a few steps at a time, you might soon be at the top of the stairs.

You aren’t happy with your life. If achieving your goals doesn’t make you happy on some level — if you don’t feel fulfilled creatively — then you need to do some serious thinking about your life in general, and how your goals either support or do not support your happiness. There can be a huge difference between what others want for you, or what you think you want for yourself, and what the hidden core of you needs for happiness. Sometimes, too, talent is a curse. You may be talented in an area that doesn’t actually bring you happiness or balance.

So far my highlight of the summer is that on Sunday I got to go to the Oregon Observatory in Sunriver & look in all of their telescopes at night. Apparently it’s the largest collection of public telescopes in the country. I highly recommend it! The staff was really kind & knowledgeable too. ✨
