My general reaction to the results (SNP h2 4-10%, PGS performance 1-4%) is to be reminded of a Woody Allen gag from Annie Hall. There is a split screen; Woody and Diane Keaton are both talking to their therapists. The therapists ask, How often do you have sex?

Since my name is invoked, I gotta say that "BG is 99% BS" is too strong. BS suggests it is untrue; my take is that this study is mostly a careful, detailed exploration of the obvious. Human behavioral differences are correlated with DNA. It is the 1st law of BG come home to roost in modern genomics.

My letter responding to The Economist’s “designer babies” editorial is out. The editorial cites our study on public attitudes toward polygenic embryo screening but omits a key finding: attitudes became less favorable when participants first considered potential concerns. Link below.

Thanks. For the record, over the years I have been much more skeptical about the whole hereditarian project. The current post was a limited attempt to meet the hereditarians on their own terms. See eg here: ericturkheimer.substack.com/p/origin-of-...

That's fine but it doesn't apply to me. I didn't come close to signing the letter, and based on the information you provide I don't think the Gaza CS postdoc should have been let go. By far the worst threats to academic freedom come from the right, as Trump and Trumpians have demonstrated.

I’m sorry but I am not coming out of the woodwork. In fact I have spent a forty year career publicly opposing race science. Maybe take a minute to read some of my work.

Fair enough. I didn't say that UGent shouldn't be able to follow its rules, or Belgium's. Whether following those rules is good or bad for more universal principles of academic freedom is another question. My general point is that these things are better dealt with on the front end.

It's unfortunate, but I agree with Sasha. Cofnas should never have been hired (is there a good account of how that happened?), but having been hired I don't like to see him let go for ideological reasons, despite the awfulness of his ideology. I would be fine with dismissing him at his next renewal.

You might disagree with them privately or publicly, as I have done with Paige. That’s what started all this. But within broad limits you don’t “disavow” them. That is a a social media construct not a scientific one.

I can't just leave this up here. Paige and I disagree about some things but I haven't "disavowed" her. I'm proud to be advisor. All in all you should take this down.

All these negative stories about Fauci's diary are unfair. Who wouldn't be embarrassed to have our private diary published? Beyond that is an expectation for people who ascend to big leadership positions. The NIH directors I have met have many admirable qualities; humility is not one of them.

As I think about this, the more offended I get that Visscher would write a paper that is implicitly very critical of me while casually admitting that he has never read a relevant word I have written. Proud of his ignorance. He ought to be embarrassed.

Precise genome editing of human embryos triggers praise and alarm
The ‘base editing’ technique that researchers used is far from ready for the clinic, but critics worry that it will spur a rush to commercialize the approach.

I am convinced that inequality writ large is the reason for the permavibe-cession. I have plenty of money and a very nice life. Still, it stings to have my nose rubbed so constantly in the excesses of the super-wealthy. Boarding zone 4 is fine, but I hate watching the fat cats in zone 1.
