recomped A-Train for Apple Silicon a deeply underappreciated city building sim from my childhood that really tickled my train autism it's a more popular series in Japan, though Maxis bought the Western distribution rights to this one specifically

Oh, cheetahs are so fast?! For like a minute tops. In most cases more like 30 seconds. And then they need to rest for awhile. Great for ambushes, but if you don't succeed almost immediately in catching prey, you've already failed.

Humans are slower than a lot of animals, but we can run a LOT longer than basically any other animal. The fact we are capable of running marathons is kind of ludicrous when viewed in the context of other animals.

I'd say it's the biggest reason but not the one (1) reason Advanced tool use and capability for persistence hunting were certainly major factors as well.
3294
Thorne 🌸 @ens0.me · 20m
fwiw, I do genuinely think that's the single biggest factor! It's just not the ONE factor.

Thorne 🌸 @ens0.me · 29m
Cheetahs, despite their reputation for extreme speed, can't run for more than about a minute without resting for awhile. Humans can only run a small fraction of their speed, but if we're in shape, we can for *hours*. The fact we can run marathons is kind of absurd in context of other animals.

It's a huge reason, but I wouldn't say it's the ONE reason. Tool use and uniquely high capacity for running endurance are definitely significant factors as well.

I've worked from home since 2015, and am a huge advocate for it, and could never go back. Offices are a very less-than-ideal way to address these needs.

You realize it is normal for people to express how their personal experiences have made them passionate about a given issue, right? I'm neurodivergent as hell and understand this. There's a reason I started by talking about how well-researched this is — the real evidence.

Thorne 🌸 @ens0.me · 51m
Yeah, agreed, there's no need for hostility, I'm not sure why you're being so weird and accusatory about me sharing why this is a deeply personal issue for me

This is the biggest reason I switched to WFH in 2015, well before the pandemic. I tried the noise-cancelling headphones route, but my last in-office job had bosses that made a big deal about how the open office facilitated communication and you shouldn't shut that out blah blah blah

I barely left home for about 7 years. I WFHed at my tech jobs, played video games, poasted on Twitter, and hung out with my wife (then gf) at home. Didn't do much else. This was *extremely* bad for my mental health.

Thorne 🌸 @ens0.me · 1h
"I have an immunocompromised husband who could still easily be killed by COVID" is a great reason to mostly stay at home, and I truly mean that! But you shouldn't be trying to argue that never leaving the house isn't a mental health hazard, come on now.

Blocked for standing by the well-researched phenomenon that never leaving the house tends to make you more depressed and paranoid :| I meant what I said in the first paragraph too

Apparently, some of my very conservative family members are planning on sitting out the 2026 election. I'm talking people who voted R for decades unfailingly. I know this is anecdotal, but the severe collapse in support for MAGA polls are showing seems real.

Excited to announce we are adding support for Android tablets and Chromebooks to v1! This is in addition to iPadOS, macOS, and Windows! (Android phones, along with iPhones, will be added in the next major release. They will need their own versions of the game's menus optimized for small screens.)

I get that you do not care that I have gotten violent threats as a trans woman for not being a revolutionary communist who rejects new technology.

"I'm marginalized" should not be a get-out-of-consequences-free card for abusive behavior, but it's the strategy that crew employs constantly whenever they get any degree of pushback.

Thorne 🌸 @ens0.me · 2h
A lot of these trans people who've been blocked/banned have viciously harassed me in the past despite being a trans woman myself because they decided me being a tech worker makes me evil. It's a crew of abusive harassers who happen to be disproportionately trans.

Thorne 🌸 @ens0.me · 2h
I'm trans. I've never even gotten a temporary ban on here. None of the staff have me blocked. All of this despite the fact I was one of the earliest users and am highly active on here. I know a bunch of other trans people in the same boat.

“what is the information diet of politicians” is an increasingly urgent question

I love Mamdani, he's a fantastic politician, but the whole "cooperative local and state government" thing is doing a lot of heavy lifting. NY and particularly NYC is very progressive politically. The electorate in a lot of places would reject a Mamdani-like politician.

Do what you have to do to keep your loved ones safe. I'm glad you're handling it okay. That said, your anecdotal experiences do not change the fact that this erodes a lot of people's mental health and connection to reality.

This is a fair and understandable take, but it's very likely to be a deeply unpopular one. That's the big shortcoming of these sorts of policy polls: most people lack the contextual knowledge and critical thinking skills to understand downstream impacts of policy proposals.

This sort of rigid, absolutist deontology is one of the worst ethics systems possible. It does not serve making the world a better place. It's largely about people having an ego about never having to make an imperfect choice.

Do people still use Android tablets? I do wanna get Cozysters on phones down the road once I can make versions of the menus and such that work better on small screens, but it would be fairly easy for me to release an Android tablet version (The iPad version will be one of the first available)

The only nice thing I have to say about our approach to airport security is that it is good that we have finally, after 25 years, realized that taking out laptops, taking off shoes, and preventing non-fliers from going to the gate don't solve shit and just make things way worse for people.

Of course, their backscatter machines will never miss that a trans woman is pre-op and give you a suuuuper invasive patdown when it does. They catch gocks but not glocks

The big thing that meaningfully helped with security post-9/11 was reinforcing cockpit doors. In the case of the Flydubai flight, we are lucky the stabbed pilot managed to unlock the door.

Thorne 🌸 @ens0.me · 4h
It's because so much of airport security is just security theater. Governments do undercover testing of airport security a lot with well-concealed weapons, and generally at least 2/3 are missed.
