A violent and coordinated youth uprising? Listen to each country’s protesters, not the voices telling us Europe is ungovernable. That’s exactly the picture Europe’s enemies want to paint. Read my latest for @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

7/ I also briefly look at the deeper causes: the EU's failure to build a shared identity, Germany's changing relationship with WWII guilt, and the return of the country to "hard politics".

6/ I sketch possible consequences for EU: ➡️ Germany’s strained relations with Poland and France (and Ukraine) ➡️ warmer relation with Russia ➡️ EU policymaking further gridlocked and EU weakened overall (budget, energy, defence and more)

5/ Here is the catch. No far-right party leads the polls in the EU's largest economy, whose cadres also play with the idea of "lost territories". Will the cadres soften their stances? What does it mean for EU policymaking?

4/ Some say not to worry. Anti-establishment parties usually tone down once they near power, (Meloni, Wielders and more). The AfD seems to be doing this about the EU: a new strategy paper reportedly drops the euro exit and seeks a looser union of sovereign states.

3/ The post was deleted and its author resigned from the youth organisation's board. But it wasn’t an isolated case: Alsace-Lorraine memes, ambiguous talk of "Mitteldeutschland", and Höcke's Kaiserreich map all circulate in the same milieu. Not official party policy, but a pattern worth examining.

2/ On 3rd October, German Unity Day, an AfD youth official posted a map of German-speaking populations in Europe. The caption called reunification a "milestone" toward uniting the entire German people in one state.

010 1
Enrico Giagnoli @enrico-giagnoli.wsocial.eu · 19/10/2026

It's clearly not: they say we have to invest in defence, but buy their weapons; we have to invest in technology, but not develop our own; we have to reduce external energy dependencies, but buy more oil and gas from them... The list could clearly go on

6/6 #Mistral’s presence in the AI race and #W’s European-hosted, verified-human social network are very welcome steps. The test is whether Europe gains durable capabilities and credible alternatives in the long run, plus a unified strategy across Member States.

Enrico Giagnoli @enrico-giagnoli.wsocial.eu · 17/10/2026
5/6 Common thread? External leverage: over social media, access to technology, defence, and public debate. Arthur Mensch’s @arthurmensch.bsky.social argument is timely: we can’t hope to use what others create. Europe needs capabilities across the stack—compute, models, applications and deployment.

4/6 Fourth, France’s Jean-Noël Barrot accused Musk of harassment aimed at influencing national debates ahead of France’s election. Barrot also alleged that an unnamed Israeli company had created fake French accounts on X to post about the #Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

3/6 Third, At Dublin’s AI summit, Europe’s infrastructure gap was again in focus: Europe has 5% of the world’s data centre capacity, against US’s 75% and China’s 15% (although figures differ from other estimates).

2/6 Second, China proposed export controls on certain technologies covering advanced AI, including certain 2-trillion-parameter models, as well as semiconductor, solar and biomedical technologies. Translated: access cannot be taken for granted.

1/6 Let’s have a look at this week’s tech news about Europe’s dependency and how it is not just an economic issue. First, Ukraine faced restrictions on Starshield, disrupting military operations. The blame game among Elon Musk, the White House and the US military still carries one.

A few weeks ago, Russia's defense ministry announced a "digital detox" was coming. Well, right now Moscow is paralyzed, Yandex's biggest services, Taxi, delivery, Alice, are all down, and the rest of the so-called Runet is glitching too. All according to plan.

5/5 Mistral's new models may one day improve enough to sustain a big client like Ecosia, but not overnight, and not cheaply at first. Hopefully the Qwant partnership carries on. Still, preaching tech sovereignty while relying on Chinese AI models and US search engines signals a dissonance.
010 1
Enrico Giagnoli @enrico-giagnoli.wsocial.eu · 09/10/2026
4/5 I also hope Ecosia doesn't confuse autonomy with autarchy. The former means freedom to set one’s objectives and direction. The latter is utopian at best and suicidal at worst. Autonomy takes effort, long-term vision and short-term compromise.
110 1
Enrico Giagnoli @enrico-giagnoli.wsocial.eu · 09/10/2026
3/5 Shouldn't Ecosia's dependence on both US and Chinese technology make it question how European it really is?
100 1
Enrico Giagnoli @enrico-giagnoli.wsocial.eu · 09/10/2026
2/5 Ecosia argues Mistral isn't fully European because it relies heavily on US investors. True. But it's equally true that Ecosia: 1) relies on both Google and Bing for its searches 2) says it ditched a European AI company for Chinese models
110 1
Enrico Giagnoli @enrico-giagnoli.wsocial.eu · 09/10/2026
1/5 A few days after Mistral launched its new model #LeChonk, Ecosia ditched the French AI company. Ecosia's statement on nuclear energy doesn't even deserve a comment. Its view on how European Mistral really is, however, does.

3/3 This leaves us with two questions: 1) Can we have a common strategy and global posture without agreeing on common means? And, perhaps most importantly, 2) Can we invest time, effort, and money in common means without a shared endgame?

2/3 The Franco-German couple's failure to cooperate is bad news for the EU as a whole. It undermines the Union's push for sovereignty and defence, especially since rearmament remains largely national, not EU-wide. The risks of duplication are already well documented and only expected to grow.

1/3 The (anticipated) failure of the #MCGS (Main Combat Ground System) comes right after the #FCAS/#SCAF débacle. Same story both times: Paris and Berlin diverge on the weapons they want, on the degree of tech sovereignty, on who leads the initiative, and on who pays.
