This effect isn't limited to the grocery aisles. As extreme weather events continue, consequences compound, and organizations should be taking a closer look at where climateflation could be showing up in their own operations, supply chains, and products. 🔍

A recent study from Zero Carbon Analytics mapped food-price spikes against extreme climate events and found significant association. The bottom line: climate change is amplifying agricultural risk, disrupting global food systems, and raising food prices. 📈

Climateflation is the rise in consumer prices and the cost of living resulting from climate change-driven events. Anyone who shops for groceries is seeing it right now in the aisles—especially, the produce section. 🥑

@merriam-webster.com recently added new words to its lexicon. "Climateflation" wasn't one of them, but it could be soon . . . 👀

Climate Literacy Takeaway You don't need to become a climate scientist to make climate-informed decisions, but you do need to know which questions to ask of the science you're using. 👉 Follow the pathway 👉 Check the assumptions 👉 Choose the right metric 👉 Understand the baseline

04 | Rising seas and baselines 📊 Why it matters: Climate hazards don't occur against fixed background conditions. The same event can have different consequences if the baseline it occurs on has changed.

03 | More than just a "hot" September 📊 Why it matters: Average temperature, maximum temperature, nighttime minimums, humidity, and heat stress tell us different things. The most relevant measure depends on the question.

02 | Extreme weather could cost $20 trillion 📊 Why it matters: Big climate numbers can sound definitive, but projections are built from assumptions about future warming, exposure, adaptation, and other conditions. Understanding those assumptions is essential before using a projection to plan.

01 | Warm waters mean pricier sushi 📊 Why it matters: Climate impacts on the economy go beyond individual price spikes and can affect organizations and consumers without ever physically reaching their location.

04 | A major climate signal is not a local forecast 🌐 What happened: The current El Niño has entered record territory, with daily sea-surface temperatures in the central tropical Pacific reaching about 3.08°C above the 1991–2020 average on September 21.

Engage Climate Science @engageclimatesci.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
03 | Drought is more than rainfall 🌐 What happened: A new Earth’s Future study examined 40 years of data on "extreme atmospheric evaporative demand"—the atmosphere’s capacity to draw moisture from land and vegetation. The dominant meteorological drivers differed substantially by region.

Engage Climate Science @engageclimatesci.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
02 | Hurricane Polo lands amidst warm waters 🌐 What happened: Hurricane Polo rapidly intensified over eastern Pacific waters that were as much as 2–3°C warmer than normal, but that's not the only atmospheric condition that contributed to the storm.

01 | Climate impacts travel through systems 🌐 What happened: Intensifying El Niño conditions are raising concern about drought, agriculture, fisheries, and staple-food production across Southeast Asia.

Information without understanding doesn't mean much. That's why building a solid foundation of climate literacy—the ability to vet sources, understand basic climate fundamentals, and make real meaning out of data—is more important than ever. 💡

More climate information doesn't automatically produce better climate decisions . . . 🧠 AI took the main stage at NYC Climate Week, but as our ability to model and process climate data expands, it becomes even more critical to understand assumptions, uncertainty, scale, and context.

04 | Europe’s potatoes feel the heat 📊 Why it matters: Climate impacts can influence quality, timing, cost, and reliability—and those effects can move through contracts, processors, distributors, businesses, and consumers.

03 | Ice loss is more than melting 📊 Why it matters: Understanding how ice is being lost helps scientists understand how and where ice sheets may change in the future, and why short-term fluctuations don't tell the whole story.

02 | Hurricane Lowell reveals shared dependencies 📊 Why it matters: Climate-related disruption isn't determined by the hazard alone. An organization might have multiple suppliers or contingency plans but still depend on the same port, power grid, watershed, data center, or other physical system.

Op-ed by Dr. Twila Moon, deputy lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center @drtwilamoon.bsky.social on why the Arctic Report Card is so important and what's lost with NOAA's termination of support. #Arctic thehill.com/opinion/ener...
Our Arctic Report Card editor team and dedicated authors and supporters will do all we can to ensure critical, timely, integrated Arctic data still makes it to the decision makers, educators, and community leaders who need it. But without federal support, the task is harder, the data access systems built over two decades will go unused a trusted data source will become stale. This puts U.S. Arctic leadership at risk.

🌎 The Takeaway: Climate-informed decision-making isn't about predicting the future perfectly; it's about understanding which signals matter, how they connect, where uncertainty remains, and what questions are worth asking next. ❓ What climate question is your organization asking this week?

04 | Yesterday’s “normal” isn't today's 📊 Why it matters: Many organizational decisions are built (often invisibly) around historical patterns. As climate conditions shift, past experience becomes a less reliable planning guide.

03 | Eroding air quality has wider implications 📊 Why it matters: Climate-related impacts don't respect organizational boundaries. Conditions compound. Understanding the connections between hazards can reveal impacts that aren't obvious when issues are considered separately.
