lovely ea meetup at the local college this afternoon. about a dozen people, and about 20 different opinions. always nice to be around people who know how to disagree constructively

i grew up methodist in a 20% mornon community & yeah rationalism intuitively and immediately seemed correct. whereas it took me until literally a couple months to realize that most american christians think The Fall was a bad thing, somehow

yud was, for historigraphical reasons, still present in the intro ea resources when i took the course. his articles were extremely obvious and the least supported among our cohort

struggling to remember the last time i felt like i was living in the present. mostly due to persistent future shock, but also often the reference point puts the moment i am inhabiting in the past

my wife retroactively vindicated for thinking his name was bethlehem's bulldog
recent article from bentham's bulldog (an enthusiastic but painfully young ea) titled "Atheists Should Pray: Unless they're almost certain that God doesn't exist"

beef is negative food. you turn 1000 calories of feed into 100 calories of beef and a whole lot of methane and cow shit. ai does produce more food than the beef industry (zero)

It takes more than engagement to notice this. You need to have your own sense of educational standards (from remembering your own education) and you need to distrust the school enough to be skeptical of what they're saying and doing. You have to go into it expecting school to not be good enough.

noticing a lot of different definitions of "engaged" are being used in responses to this, ranging from "pays attention to their kid" to "understands the american educational system well enough to know how to independently verify the school's claims"

rival biotech companies, anthropic and google,,,
The precise diseases Anthropic is addressing and its progress remain unclear. Once a molecule is identified, it can take years to bring a drug to market as it is tested in human trials, a challenge that Anthropic has not taken on. Isomorphic Labs, the drug discovery arm of rival Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab, has worked for years to get to the clinic and earlier delayed that goal to the end of 2026.

community building is as close to a pan-ideological concept as humans get. i fully agree that this othering behavior is counter-productive to leftist goals that i support. i am also aware that the global far right (esp the RSS) is extremely effective at being patient with recruits
