Over the years—decades—I've seen a few games which I think suffered from that. When the developers catered to the "pro" (and later, "streamer") feedback, it made the game hostile for new players and the user-base slowly evaporated. And, like the Dead Sea, everything left behind was very salty. 😛

I feel that has a lot to do with the difficulty of making "good" AI opponents, as opposed to just a cultural desire for establishing a one-off pecking order between relative strangers.

This AI clickbait slop is everything I hate about right-wing media, but supposedly for liberals? Pass.

When that person says "nobody could have predicted this, the dog went rogue", the correct response is to laugh in their face, sue them for damages, and charge them with whatever crime that would normally be.

To borrow an analogy from Cal Newport, these systems are like someone putting a weed-whacker on a dog. At some point the dog is going to see a squirrel and leave the yard and a bunch of people and property will be damaged... But the fault is on whomever strapped the weed-whacker to a dog.

We need far more attention on the fact that Republican lawmakers are *helping and enabling it*. What's the point of any "bipartisan" bill with Republicans when they will Republicans will selectively violate the "compromise" parts of the law they didn't prefer?

Besides ego and incompetence, there's also the crime/morality aspect. Any lawful underling is a threat to a crooked boss. Crooks don't want to hire anyone who can't be coerced into becoming an accomplice, or at least extorted into silence.

I think there's some baseline human bias where we always want things to have a pleasing story. (Even pleasingly dark.) Then when it actually happens, we tend to be surprised at how stupid stuff is compared to the prophecy.

Right back at you: Use it to find out what someone being "on the campaign trail" usually means! AFAICT Obama has zero interest in running for any public office ever again—which is the opposite of what the clickbait implies. "FOX News but for liberals" is a bad thing we shouldn't encourage.

This is actually a good story by the New York Times' Peter Baker. But as usual, the editors ran it through their Euphemism Desk so the headline talks about Trump "moving ethical lines" instead of saying flat-out that the president is deeply corrupt and is putting your money in his pocket.

The president’s decision to hold an international summit at his own private golf club, an idea rejected in his first term, illustrates how much he has shattered norms.

Not just with the D-voter base! The tepid response to prior Trump crimes led low-information voters to assume that there was no substance, because "If it were a big deal I'd be hearing more about it." We already tried decorous restraint and it backfired spectacularly.

I can imagine a very reliable system if 90% of it is firmly defined rules and tasks, and the LLM just helps convert "no pickles on that burger" into food(type=burger, latest=true). customize(no_pickles) or whatever.

Besides the the dire problems of brutality and injustice, on the practical front we should be stopping to ask *which* people go back. Funny thing, it's going to be the subset of immigrants who had skills, work ethic, and clean criminal records. (Ignoring overstay-a-visa misdemeanors.)

Many character introductions happen in cutscenes, so I think a movie comparison is appropriate. As a watcher, imagine that the plucky hero fights his way through to finally confront the villainous mastermind, the music swells, the curtain rises to reveal [hard-subtitle text {Troy McClure}]

Thinking about it a little more, it feels related to games with a director's-commentary mode. Players might not appreciate having their suspension of disbelief interrupted by a reminder of the real world. A compromise might be loading-screens, showing characters you've met so far and the actors.

I suspect Death Stranding did a nice thing for not quite the right reasons. It seems more about brag-promotion than giving credit. "Look at these real celebrities we put in the game as versions of themselves! Recognize their faces and voices? Let's make it obvious so you know we have celebrities!"

The tricky part is how that's also what the cult counts-on, it's how it traps and keeps members. They trick members into burning bigger and bigger bridges to keep their cult "family", until they feel they have no other option than to stay, because their real family won't talk to them anymore.

A pathological narcissist can't easily tolerate anyone smarter than themselves, and a criminal can't give any tasks to someone honest who might expose their crimes. Put those together, and it explains the White House under Trump.
