Why is it that one can go for long periods of time without (apparently) being noticed by anyone, and then when you get into a relationship again, suddenly others suddenly start noticing you?

Why must the equipment at my gym be moved around every bloody week? I know nothing is permanent and change is inevitable, but could the dumbbells please just stay in the same place for more than a month? Please?

Thought I was having a bad hair day, but then I overheard two of my students talking to each other, saying my hair looks nice. Let me tell you: there are few things quite as good for the ego as hearing a sixteen-year-old compliment your hair when they don't realise you're listening.

"Sometimes, when someone doesn't know about something, they treat it like it doesn't exist." - a friend putting exactly the right words to a frustrating thing a voicenote - this time on the topic of medical practitioners, but more broadly applicable in so many situations.

Been struggling with sleep and reduced appetite. For a second, I thought I was dealing with a pretty sudden and annoyingly intense crush. Then remembered my ADHD meds had been increased. Thank goodness 😅

"This time for real, with no expectations, just enjoy what’s happening." - Advice I got from a good friend. Thinking I might need to tattoo this on the back of my hand or something, for the sake of remembering.

When I hear about a local (Japanese) person wanting an English tutor for their kid, I'm happy to help. But then when they add they only want an "American or British" person, or a "native" speaker, I start growing suspicious. When you start asking questions, you realise they often mean "white."

Japanese school: This snow looks like it's gonna get heavy! Students, go home *early*! Make sure to finish club activities by 6pm. Tomorrow's morning trains have been delayed. First period lessons are cancelled. Students will start the day an hour later than usual. Staff? Business as usual.

In case no one has told you lately: 1. You are strong 2. You are beautiful 3. Sea cucumbers have fish that live in their buttholes and eat their ever-regenerating gonads like some sort of sick undersea Prometheus 4. You are deserving of love

I do beg your pardon, so sorry to disturb, but might I perhaps enquire as to whether you may know of any convenient voids in the vicinity one could scream into? Thanks ever so much.

How does a body manage to make so much snot when one has a cold? Where does it all come from? How does it produce so much at such an alarming rate?

My school has fokkol chill, I swear. The kids just got back from a 2-week winter vacation. Monday was a public holiday so we started on Tuesday. Nice, so they had time to relax and spend quality time with their families, right? Lol no. They wrote tests for the first 2 hours of the first day of term.

COVID test round three. Unlike with many things, the experience does not, in fact, get better with time or practise. Fully expecting it to be negative, but decided to rather err on the side of caution. Please cross fingers for me to fail the bloody test this time.

The earth is melting. A pandemic continues to ravage society and vaccine preventable diseases are making a comeback. Fascism and nationalism is on the rise. War crimes are being committed everywhere. We’re in a new gilded age. Swear as much as you fucking want. It’s, honestly, very appropriate.

Apparently it's once again time for the ritual of downloading dating apps, losing all faith in humanity, remembering why I deleted them last time and probably doing so again. Happens once or twice a year or so.

Aaand we're back to sadness. The last little bit of 2023 is throwing me a lot of emotional homework about old issues: rejection sensitivity, abandonment anxiety, control issues, feeling excluded. I'd wish for 2024 not to include revisiting these things so much, but I know that isn't realistic.

It keeps amazing me how life can be so bloody difficult and tiresome for so long, and then all of a sudden there are these brief periods where I get overwhelmed with joy. It's like a seesaw between sadness and euphoria.

Your average RN naval third-rater (say) has large stocks of two very useful things for dealing with cat poo: - Sand (you use it to deal with spills of blood, oil etc) - Ash (side product of cooking) They also have carpenters. ROYAL NAVY SAILING SHIPS HAD LITTER TRAYS. /7

SIDEBAR: the atmospheric pressure thing is often overlooked with ships cats. This was a HUGE reason to have cats on board pre-barometer and contributed to the superstitions around them. Cats seemed to be able to predict bad weather Zoomies were a MAJOR weather warning for early sailors. /3

Got an insight into the misunderstandings between me and my hair stylist today. When I said the cut I have now is hard to style, she started asking "so in the morning, after you've wet and blow-dried it..." Adorable, that she thinks I have the time or energy for that each morning.

When it's 19:30, I've just gotten home from work, and I'm having my little "sitting in the car in my own parking lot before actually entering my building" time, I do not want to chat or even wave at people. I appreciate my neighbours being friendly, but also wish people respected this sacred time.

It's frankly exhausting how often I catch myself anticipating and then rehearsing entirely hypothetical arguments in my head. Is... is this what it feels like to be a chihuahua? Are they just constantly reacting to imaginary attacks and living in that delusion full-time?

Some days, one needs to be left to sit around bleeding in peace. The fact that a damn big percentage of the working population is expected to keep working through that on a monthly basis is a travesty.

Sometimes the universe seems harsh and unrelenting. But then I remember that potatoes exist. And I'm technically an adult, which means I could eat them multiple times every day. And then the universe still seems harsh, but at least it has potatoes, and that makes things a bit easier.

Today, I was interviewing some of our (Japanese) students as they compete to see who goes on an exchange programme to the USA. I asked one, "What would you want to ask American high school students? What do you want to learn about them?" Kid deadass said "What's your favourite Japanese food?"

COVID got me again. Slept for 11 hours. Now I must eat in order to take my meds, but zero appetite. On the upside, S02 of Our Flag Means Death has dropped some episodes, and Butt Creed: Black Flag is exactly mindless enough for when I feel kak. So it's a pirate-themed sick leave this time around.
