I had to use the same filter from PacRim to turn Shin Godzilla monochrome as it is so difficult to find the official version But damn, it was so incredibly worth it A stark & painful story of disaster, bureaucratic inaction, & impossible decisions, Shin Godzilla remains one of the best in the genre

I also love the little transition cutscenes between location as you travel by a very similar taxi to the one you drove in CloudPunk Heading past all the little stops & mechanical zones you would look out for in that game. An homage & enticement to the things I loved Now as a passenger, not a driver

Always love re-watching Pacific Rim (2013) with @lluisabadias.bsky.social and after all these years I really do prefer it in black & white There's a stark, brutalist energy that only really shines through in monochrome. A real masterpiece of chiaroscuro I love both this & Uprising so damn much 💜🦖

I also have to say The design for Zedus in Gamera the Brave absolutely fucks I'm always here for a frill-necked monster (can you guess my favourite dino design in Jurassic park?), but they absolutely nailed the monstrous energy with Zedus and I love it so fucking much 😍

Last night I finally tracked down a copy of Blues In The Night (1941) to watch, a musical-based film noir, and it's a lot to take in Very much a Hays Code era film, that attempted to balance a light-hearted "get the band together" theme with some pretty dark genre tones

While this movie took some weird directions that didn't really play out, it is a truly beautiful film. The puppetry & suit designs are gorgeous, and the primary human motivations of grief and being unable to let go really hit hard The Iris puppet is also so adorable! I want a plush one 💜

One of the things that I think doesn't work quite well as intended though is Destoroyah's final form This thing is too big to properly function as a suit. The person inside can barely move, so it can feel more like a statue than a monster Still, utterly fantastic suit. A proper evil kaiju design

Fun fact I learned about Gamera: Guardian of the Universe -this was the first film to have a woman suit actor in a kaiju film. Yumi Kameyama She originally wanted to be in the Gamera suit, because her family name had the character for turtle (亀), but she ended up kicking turtle butt as Gyaos

I love everything about the Gamera films, especially in the Heisei era. They were my first, and gave me my love of the genre While I will always champion for kaiju films in general, my heart belongs to the giant turtle who has kept me safe all these years We all love you Gamera!

Our year of kaiju films has reached one of the greatest tonight, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995), and @lluisabadias.bsky.social & I can't stop making atoll jokes 🏝️ This was the film that brought Lluis & I together to make games years ago. And re-watching it with him is always special 💜🐢💜

The Kaiju Girl Caramelise manga has been with me most of my transition journey A story about a girl who transforms into a giant monster whenever emotions get to much. There's a lot of rejection dysphoria in there, and trying to find yourself in something others see as monstrous Big trans vibes
