Out of curiosity, did this have a mechanic for disabling implants (like crits in BattleTech)?

Oh sorry, misremembered. "I assume that people lie more often than I assume you think they do" is...also an odd thing to contribute to a conversation

Null (they/them) @emptysetgo.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
For the life of me I couldn't figure out what "people lie sometimes" was even meant to bring to the conversation. Everyone everywhere is aware of that possibility, and we all have our own litmus tests and risk tolerance, and it's frankly insulting to imply otherwise

Forgot to share this before! #FinishTheDamnGame month is great; having a bit of extrinsic motivation has really helped motivate me to tackle a backlog of games that I legitimately enjoy but don't get around to. I've beaten Tactical Breach Wizards and am making steady progress on Midnight Suns! :)

If you're still wondering about this, it used to be the case that a new CPU necessitated a new OS, because there would be a number of versions of the same OS with different Hardware Abstraction Layers. Hardware is more standardised than it used to be, so Windows 8+ editions only have one HAL

This one. Apparently it also does something with card draw and healing? But mostly it's to make him yell

I specifically turn down the volume any time I'm playing a mission with Wolverine because of his utility card that just makes him yell real loud

I also miss these - love RPGs, but not everything needs to *be* one - and all the newest examples I can think of are either for the PS3 (WET, first Assassin's Creed, first Mirror's Edge) or remakes of even older games. Weird state of affairs

To clarify a little: I think these results are *close* to correct; I suspect that the way some traits naturally get grouped (boosted/lowered by the same questions) makes certain traits a little easier or harder to get as the top result

firing a bunch of people responsible for your good game, hiring some new people and forcing them to make something almost exactly like the old one, miraculously it’s just as good, and then firing a bunch of the new people because your company already ruined its own goodwill. masterful gambit sir

...and very difficult to do so in a comprehensive way that actually captures all the knock-on costs. E.g., lines of code written increased by 200% looks good, but it's easy to overlook time spent fixing mistakes, how many extra lines are due to inefficient coding practices, etc.

FWIW, it would need to be a 138% productivitiy increase to balance out (2.38 being roughly the multiplicative inverse of .41). But like you said, it's only perceived increases that matter anyway. Even if they were actually measuring productivity, it would be very easy to do so in a misleading way...

Oh, and in case you want to know how volkite guns work: what if instead of microwaves wiggling water to heat things up, they just remotely, rapidly, and continuously triggered combustion (importantly, many 40k authors clearly don't actually know this so you'll get mixed descriptions)
010
Null (they/them) @emptysetgo.bsky.social · 23/05/2026
powered microwave gun, but doesn't utilise plasma at any point. So melta guns are most likely firing an unstable plasma composed of molecules with high specific heat
110
Null (they/them) @emptysetgo.bsky.social · 23/05/2026
Notably, volkite guns, which function very differently, are also described as emitting "pure thermal energy," so I think this is a case of characters in-universe not knowing how their own tech works (very common in 40k). T'au technology is better documented and their melta equivalent *is* a fusion-

Null (they/them) @emptysetgo.bsky.social · 23/05/2026
I think what it does has already been covered pretty well by others, but if you want to know how it functions, it uses fusion technology to create plasma and then emits *checks notes* "pure thermal energy." Cannot emphasise enough that this isn't just impossible, it's not even a coherent concept

My first exposure to the series was RE4 so I thought the parasites were evil and residing in people, but apparently parasites are one of the less common types of infection in the series
010
Null (they/them) @emptysetgo.bsky.social · 09/03/2026
Not sure if you want a serious answer, but the idea is basically that evil itself is the resident. It made more sense in the first game, which takes place entirely in a spooky mansion (so evil resides in the mansion), and became nonsensical for most of the rest of the games

Oh it's super easy to emulate older handhelds on a phone. Vimm.net has a bunch of ROMs, .iso files, etc. and also links to emulators to download. I do recommend against DS emulation, melonDS is super unstable and I found it better to just hack a 3DS

Oh wait, my issue with KOTOR actually wasn't the gameplay. There was a...very noticeably missing choice in the final mission on the starting planet and it really messed with my immersion. I'll probably get back to it and just pretend I made the choice they didn't allow

Null (they/them) @emptysetgo.bsky.social · 27/11/2025
Seconding the Fallouts and KOTOR. I want to like these games, I've tried so hard to get into them, but the gameplay is incredibly dated and it's hard to wrap my head around some of it when I'm used to modern games. The keyboard mapping in Fallout makes me feel insane

Rice can be microwaved, and once you can do that, there are endless meal possibilities (One cup of rice and two cups of water, tablespoon of oil, dash of salt in a large microwave-safe bowl. Cover with paper towel. Nuke 10 minutes. Stir. Nuke 15 minutes at half power. Rice complete)

"FPS is menus" statement is specific to hitscan. Projectile weapons can function identically to hitscan at point blank range*, but that positioning is in itself more parkour. I can't speak to counter strike, but D2 maps are trivial to traverse and engagement ranges are often so short...

FPS is, in a vacuum, menus. The main gameplay consists of placing your cursor (crosshair/reticle) over UI elements (enemies) and clicking on them, with high precision and speed. RPG elements definitely add to menu-ness of D2. It's worth noting that projectile based weapons are parkour, and the...
