Games need blockbusters, they're a sort of apex-predator to them. A big issue is that the blockbusters got too serialized and now all we have is Dark Souls and GTA6. GTA6 or Elden Ring 2 could both be worse than whatever assassin's creed is up to but that doesn't matter, we have 111 of the latter.

Quality and quantity of games today are much higher than they used to be and consumers and players tend to prefer higher quality games. HOWEVER the reason a game succeeds compared to it's peers is often due to reasons outside the game itself.
