I think the main problem with this is that a good boycott should target the company -- not the consumers. Most Tesla owners are left-leaning urbanites who wanted to avoid contributing to climate change. They didn't know Elon Musk would try to establish the Nerd Reich. Why alienate them?

It's also because polls today generally correct for the sampling issues that led to polling error underestimating Trump's support four years ago, so it's not an apples to oranges comparison.

I also think The Economist's model takes into account how polling errors underpredicted Trump's vote in the last two races. If the opposite is true this time (not a smart gamble, but not impossible given generic Dems' performance post-Dobbs), Biden could be stronger than the polls show.

Pushing back against all our gloom and pessimism, an incumbent losing while the economy is booming would be historically unprecedented, I think. If Biden actually runs on the economy instead of vague concepts like "democracy," 538's forecast might just be the better one.

But how much is this a factor of Harris simply not being at the top of the ticket? Back in mid-2007 Hillary Clinton led Barack Obama among Black Democratic primary voters. That only started to change once Obama began to demonstrate that his candidacy was viable.
