I get it. Most of the AI hype people were the same annoying scammy sociopaths hyping crypto. The tescreal people are legitimately insane. It sucks to believe that these people somehow actually stumbled onto paradigm shifting tech like this. But if we don't organize, they're gonna own all of it.

Everyone I've talked to in tech and adjacent fields basically all say how the AI discussion is completely toxic on here and thus no one talks about it at all unless it's explicitly a critical dunk on it. As a result, anyone wanting to seriously engage on it goes back to X.

Every time I post stuff about AI, I lose followers even when I'm neutral or critical of it. I could just easily say AI sucks and rake in the likes and followers but I don't because I think this site is burying its head in the sand and making the left unable to be taken seriously on regulating AI.

I often see a lot of cynicism and pessimism about Delete Act when it's discussed online, and, I mean, there's literally no shortage of reasons to justifiably be cynical today, I get it. But Delete Act *is* a really big win for Californians (now let's get Delete Acts in some other states!)
000
Emory Roane @emoryro.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
BUT! Since that report CalPrivacy has brought enforcement actions for nonregistration, for violations of Delete Act and CPPA, and nearly 100 more brokers have registered with California (some of them noted in our research as missing previously).
100
Emory Roane @emoryro.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Of course that's not to say brokers are going to be on their best behavior (at least not before the stick comes out). Last year we @privacyrights.bsky.social and @eff.org looked at the four state broker registries and found what certainly looks like fairly widespread noncompliance.
100
Emory Roane @emoryro.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Not only are there daily fines for nonregistration but (more importantly) the fines for nondeletion are per deletion not performed. As DROP signups grow that means if a broker misses a deletion deadline those fines can get very large very quickly. Assuming 100,000 signups that's $20,000,000/day.
100
Emory Roane @emoryro.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
True, but this is also why fines can be so door-shutteringly powerful, we have a dedicated privacy enforcement agency with an appetite to go hunting, and a requirement to get third party audits starting next year!
