…taken on a brilliant new WEM mentee, run creative writing sessions with my wonderful #BeyondTheSpectrum young writers, passed my driving theory test (woo-hoo!) and knitted most of this jumper (just the sleeves to go)! Hmm, maybe all this is why I'm a bit behind with my social media… 🤔

I think we can all agree that I'm officially HOPELESS at keeping up with Bluesky, but I'm still here, kind of! Over the past few months I've been working on 2 new WIPs, completed another project with Fiction Express, delivered a workshop to c.100 people at the @writingeastmidlands.com conference…

Excited to share that my story THE GHOSTS OF HOLLY HALL is being launched this Friday with Fiction Express! Every week, readers will vote for where they want the story to go next. And isn't the cover great? My MC, Lauren, has mild cerebral palsy like I do – I'm thrilled this has been represented!
Image shows the cover of The Ghosts of Holly Hall by Emma Pass. The cover is illustrated in a cartoon style and shows a white girl with shoulder-length brown hair, standing with her back to the viewer and looking over her right shoulder. She is wearing a red hoody, jeans and red trainers, and wears a brace on her right leg. Behind her is a sinister-looking, ramshackle old house with a pointy roof and tall chimneys. There are lights showing in some of the windows and a flight of steps leading to the front door. Behind the house the sky is filled with tall white clouds. The cover has the title across the middle in bold white lettering with the author's name in smaller letters underneath and the Fiction Express logo, made to look like a stylised stack of books with "Fiction Express" next to them, in the bottom left-hand corner.

Been a bit quiet on here because of life/work stuff, but popping up to wish everyone a Merry Christmas/holiday season and a Happy New Year! Auburn has already been at the gin, as you can see… 😂

It's #BookSky #BookAdvent Day 4! Today I'm sharing the 10th anniversary edition of STARRING KITTY by @keris.bsky.social, a heartwarming LGBT+ teenage romance about Kitty, who is falling for Dylan, the girl with the purpley-red hair…but Dylan wants to be more than Kitty's secret. What will Kitty do?
Image shows the cover of STARRING KITTY by Keris Fox. The cover has a cartoon-style of two girls seen from the back, one in a pink top and black trousers with her her reddish-brown hair tied back in a ponytail with a spotty red scarf, and one wearing a yellow jacket and grey jeans – she has bobbed purple hair and a white rucksack with vertical black stripes across it and a black pocket/flap on the front. The girls are standing on a golden beach, looking out towards the sea, which is various shades of turquoise. The sky is blue with a few white clouds in it. There is also a quote that says "A beautiful, warm, kind, romantic, utterly special book – Susie Day"

#BookSky #BookAdvent Day 3! Here is the wonderful SURRENDER, a poetry collection by the equally wonderful Cathy Grindrod, which explores how we connect and disconnect with the past, place, work, nature, the animal world and ultimately, with others. Available from @fiveleavesbooks.bsky.social 🍃📚
Image shows the cover of SURRENDER by Cathy Grindrod. The cover is black, with the text in white, and a black horse's head, face on, in the middle. The horse has a brownish tint to its mane and around its muzzle.

In THE GIRL FROM NORWAY, Norwegian refugee Hedda & Canadian airman Bill meet after Hedda flees occupied Norway for Shetland with her young son. It becomes a place of unexpected hope and possibility for them both, but as war threatens the islands' shores, tragedy is closer than they think… 2/3
Image shows the cover of THE GIRL FROM NORWAY by Emma Pass. A blonde woman in a red coat and blue beret is looking towards the left of the picture. Behind her is a wooden jetty and a wooden building, some flags and a fjord with snow-capped mountains in the distance. Three planes are flying across the sky, which is blue with clouds in it.

Sounding the "both my books are less than a fancy coffee on Kindle right now" klaxon… in BEFORE THE DAWN, Ruby, who longs to escape Devon & her controlling father, meets American soldier Sam & they plan a future together. But then, on June 6, 1944, Sam's battalion sets off for Omaha beach… 1/3
Image shows the cover for Before the Dawn by Emma Pass. A soldier in a khaki uniform is kissing a woman in a red hat and brown coat. Behind them a plane flies through a sky filled with pink and gold cloud. At the bottom of the cover is an image of a coastline and the sea. The tagline says "In their darkest hour, can they find their way back to one another?"

Image shows the interior of a campervan with a wooden ceiling, white walls and wood effect lino on the floor. On the back doors are blue and white tile effect stickers and there is some yellow floral bunting hanging across the van in front of them. Writing from the van office today in the freezing but beautiful Peak District (I have a mug of hot coffee and the diesel heater is on, so I'm nice and toasty!). #AmWriting #VanLife
Image shows a laptop on a wooden table inside a campervan. There is a metal mug of coffee next to the laptop and a window. Visible behind it is part of the van's bulkhead, which is painted pale grey, a metal handle, a wooden sign saying "Vera" on it and some small magnets. Through the window is a view of a road, trees, fields, hills, the sky and some clouds.

Image shows the cover of ACID by Emma Pass. The cover has a photograph of a girl on it with long red hair, wearing a black vest, jeans and a tool belt, walking towards the camera with a serious expression. Around her is what looks like a shower of rubble and rain in silver and red. At the top, in white lettering, is the tagline: "They stole her life. Now she wants it back." ACID is written in large, metallic-looking letters at the bottom with the author's name in red underneath.

Thinking wistfully back to June, when we took Vera the Van for a big road trip up to Northumberland and the Scottish Borders and the weather was like this...Le sigh. Is there anyone else here who could happily hibernate between November and March?!

Do you have a favourite writing quote? This has to be one of mine, from Gary Provost. Good writing really is like music – it really does sing. #WritingCommunity
Image shows a quote from writer Gary Provost in black text on a white background. It says "This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals–sounds that say listen to this, it is important."

After having to reschedule for 3 years in a row, I finally got to deliver a writing workshop for the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, part of my 2020 commission to create 'Burn Bright', a poem looking at the roles of women & enslaved people in Derbyshire's cotton industry. A great session!
