The 1937 Amiot 370 was a record plane derived from the Amiot 340 bomber, and set eleven international speed records. Flying at 437 km/h over 2000 kms with different loads (500, 1000 and 2000 kg). It also held the speed record over 5000 kms and 10000 kms.

It’s rare, but the bacteria is still found worldwide, having found new natural hosts in Africa, North and South America. What surprises me is “breaking a test tube”. Nobody in their right mind would use a glass test tube. And plastic Falcon tubes are hard to break.

The Defiant’s turret was based on a French SAMM design, of which Boulton-Paul would continue the development.

FWIW, the Belgian (Dutch and French language) sources say that OCAD’s Gert Vercauteren stated that the attacks were “certainly a reaction to” Iran’s incitement of attacks on Jewish targets globally. It’s English language versions that turn this into Iran “ordering” or “organising” the attacks.

Emmanuel @emmanuelmpeg.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
According to Belgian press, what Vercauteren of OCAD said is that the attacks were “a reaction to” Iran’s incitement to attack Jewish targets worldwide. That’s something different from Iran specifically organising an attack in Belgium. The organisation that claimed the bombings remains nebulous.

I am a barrister who once spent time seconded to the CPS serious crimes unit making charging decisions. Today, you can pretend to be one too and work through the decision-making framework in a very serious case. The police have multiple suspects in custody and the phone just rang. 👨 👨 👨 👨 👨 📱 👮‍♀️ 🚨

I tend to “have open” one physical book and one e-book — the latter being more practical for commutes (by train). But often enough that becomes two physical books with different themes, and one e-book.

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

From my youth I remember a BBC science show presented by a huge moustachiod man and a tiny woman (heads only in same frame thanks to a podium with a step and heels) on which an eccentric-looking physiologist gave an explanation of why we can ride a bike, which was utterly and totally wrong.

Olive Ann Beech, the “First Lady of Aviation,” was born #OTD in 1903. 1932: Co-founded the Beech Aircraft Company (later, Beechcraft). 1940: Took full command of the company's daily ops & production when her husband fell ill, delivering >7,400 military aircraft during #WWII.🧵 #WomenInBusiness
A warm, intimate black-and-white portrait photograph of an elegant Olive Ann Beech (1903–1993), celebrated as the "First Lady of Aviation" for her historic tenure leading Beechcraft. She sits relaxed inside what appears to be an office or home setting, leaning her left elbow on a surface to rest her head gently against her hand. Her light-colored hair is styled in tight, classic curls, and she flashes a bright, genuine, open-mouthed smile toward the lens, exuding a warm and approachable confidence. She wears a structured textured jacket or blouse accented by an intricately patterned silk neck scarf. On her wrists, several thick chain bracelets with dangling metallic charms are prominently displayed, alongside an elegant ring on her right hand. The background features a soft-focus interior with a light brick or tiled wall, framed art, and a dark credenza holding bottles or barware. The composition focuses entirely on her expressive face, creating a joyful, personal mood that balances her formidable corporate legacy with a charming, personal warmth.

Hawker and Supermarine both took an extremely gradualist approach to developing swept-wing jet fighters, reviving the “politique de prototypes” in a British version. Still not a good idea. That said, the Hunter was as good as a subsonic Cold War jet fighter could be.

Dear British Airways: This very public thread has shown your airline to be a primary example of some of the worst customer service in modern airline history. Diversions for medical emergencies happen, but everything after that is on you. You guys need to be shelling out refunds BIG time.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

That, but plus IJN operational safety and damage control practices were so dubious that one wonders why they didn’t stock up on Poudre B, just in case. I imagine that even David Beatty would have worried a bit more before going into battle.

Yes. But what is perhaps surprising is the poor individual performance of the Japanese scouts, who were supposed to be part of the elite. And it is not that this was a secondary task for IJN cruisers such as Tone — she had been built for this job.

Lepanto did long-term damage to the Ottoman fleet, but wasn’t decisive in any strategic way. The conflict quickly shifted back to the amphibious raids and invasions that were the raison d’être of galley fleets anyway.

Essentially it went like this: IJN: We can’t go to war with the USA, we would certainly lose. IJA: Okay, if you are willing to officially put that on the record and take the responsibility for it, we won’t go to war. IJN: Let’s go to war

Yes, but also USS Wasp was a compromised design that sacrificed damage tolerance for speed and air group size on a limited tonnage. The USN would have much preferred not to put her in harm’s way.
