Eugène Jansson's painting from 1898 depicts the large expanse of water in central Stockholm known Riddarfjäden. Jansson was one of the most significant artists in the last years of the 19thC to create a style of painting that reflected the essence of Scandinavia.

This is great - the early origins of the 'scan and pan' use of the camera across historic images (here, paintings) for television programmes on the history of art. A way of seeing that we now take for granted - but as John explains, wasn't so easy or so obvious at the time. 🗃️📜📷📸📹

Alan Adler was possibly Australia’s most photographed man, having tested his analog photobooths with weekly selfies for more than 50 years. With a legacy that now includes a photobook and an upcoming exhibition at RMIT Gallery, Melbourne, he leaves us with so much to remember him.

Max Beckmann's painting (1936) is of his second wife Matilde von Kaulbach, better known as Quappi; Beckmann produced much of his best work during his years of isolation and exile in the 1930s after the Nazis came to power.
