Daydreaming about normal jobs I could do the other day: ‘I like to drive… I could do delivery. If only there was a delivery job where your employer paid well and treated you with dignity… I could drive around the neighbourhood, have little chats with people, give them their parcels… ‘ the fantasy:

Was struck by the sudden powerful urge to eat a vegetable, something which almost never happens to me, and thanks to Senshi from Dungeon Meshi I know that I ought to listen to what my body is telling me it needs, which is why I poured myself an 8pm glass of wine and did incompetent veggie noodles.
Noodles, with glass of wine, and broccoli. They don’t look good exactly but there are definitely vegetables there.

And here's Liz Bourke in Locus Magazine: locusmag.com/2025/04/the-...
Tesh is an award-winning writer for a reason. Her prose is vivid and elegant. The Incandescent builds its pace and tension with a masterful hand, and it offers its characters, the adults and the teenagers both, a generosity of spirit and great, clear-eyed, searing compassion. They’re all people. Intensely relatable people. (Walden’s combination of intellectual snobbery and interpersonal discomfort – both of which she’s aware of and tries to overcome – is painfully recognisable, in fact.) And Tesh’s ability to evoke place is in full swing here: The Incandescent is redolent with old wood polish and new cleaning products, sweaty teenagers and churned grass. This is a brilliant novel, one that marries the energy and verve and peril of the best of the fantasy genre with the understated, literary examination of interior and professional lives. It marries the fantastical to the mundane with great deftness and deep appreciation for both. It’s been justly praised by others. All I can add is: It took my breath away.

Here's Abigail Nussbaum for the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/books/2025/m...
Turning the magical school story genre on its head, Tesh’s follow-up to the Hugo-winning Some Desperate Glory focuses not on precocious teenagers but on their teacher. Saffy Walden is director of magic at the prestigious Chetswood boarding school. When her A-level invocation class accidentally call up a demon much more dangerous than they can handle, Saffy must rise to the school’s defence, while also juggling budget meetings, difficult colleagues and a board who want to blame the whole mess on a talented scholarship student. Tesh is doing a lot of things with this novel. It is first and foremost a love letter to teachers, repeatedly making the point that their work is not only hard, but multifaceted and creative; but it is also a meditation on the pleasures of growing up – past the age where, most school stories tell us, all of life’s adventures happen, but which the novel insists is where the joyful work of becoming yourself can actually begin. And it’s a sharp indictment of the fact that a truly top-notch education remains accessible only to a privileged few. The result is a clever twist on a familiar fantasy story, starring a winning, flawed, undeniably grown-up heroine.

Here's Publishers Weekly with a starred review: www.publishersweekly.com/9781250835017
Hugo and World Fantasy Award winner Tesh (Some Desperate Glory) puts a fresh spin on dark academia by focusing on school administrators, faculty, and staff. Dr. Sapphire “Saffy” Walden, director of magic at Chetwood School (and an alumna herself), spends her 16-hour workdays managing one crisis after the next. In between, she teaches the Year Seven arcane safety course and maintains the thaumic engines that keep the school from collapsing “out of mundane reality altogether and disappear[ing] into the demonic plane, taking six hundred children with it.” Walden doesn’t have time to fight with the school’s chief marshal Laura Kenning, a “butch avenging angel” in charge of magical security, over the inherent risks of her star pupil’s ability to summon demons. When said pupil summons an 11th-order archdemon, however, the women must put aside their differences to address the threat. Defeating the beast forces Walden to confront her own demons (real and figurative) and, what’s more galling, acknowledge that Kenning may have a point. Focusing on the administrators is a fresh entryway into a popular genre, and “awful nerd with a superiority complex” Walden makes for a fascinating and often humorous narrator. Fans of Naomi Novik’s Scholomance series won’t want to miss this thoughtful exploration of privilege, power, and private school education.
