Big recco for this series by @emilydufton.bsky.social that questions the received notions of Nixon’s original War on Drugs – in particular, the cult of legitimacy surrounding Dan Baum’s infamous quote from John Erlichman (iykyk) that has shaped conceptions about the WOD substack.com/home/post/p-...

Fifty-five years ago, Nixon launched a ‘war on drugs.’ But instead of constructing more prisons, Nixon announced the largest expansion of addiction treatment in US history. @emilydufton.bsky.social, author of ADDICTION, INC., explains in @postopinions.bsky.social.

I'm honored to be sharing a stage with @emilydufton.bsky.social and Erin Williams tomorrow morning at Gold Coast Book Fair to discuss one of the most provocative allegations in the air -- as it involves gambling, painkillers, and much else: "the business of addiction." #bookfest #longisland

DC! I’ll be at Politics and Prose at the Wharf next week, 4/15, at 7 pm. I’ll be in conversation with Tim Shenk, fellow historian. In 2024 he was named GW’s best professor by the university’s student newspaper, the Hatchet, and by the end of our chat he’ll be your favorite too.

On 4/15 I’ll give a virtual talk with Dr. Jerome Jaffe, Nixon’s deeply misremembered drug czar who was actually responsible for launching a nationalized system of addiction treatment clinics in 1971. The talk is hosted by @librarycongress.bsky.social, where I did most of my research. See you there!

Nixon didn't just declare war on drugs, he secretly launched the biggest addiction treatment program in American history. Methadone clinics. Federal funding. It worked. Then they buried it. Historian @emilydufton.bsky.social will join me on YouTube on 4/20 to discuss!

The loss of the WaPo books section is a real tragedy. After it was relaunched in 2022, the section became an important voice in the declining world of book coverage. Especially not cool when my book comes out in 10 weeks 😩 www.nytimes.com/2026/02/04/b...

John Lewis, a British chemist who was instrumental in discovering and developing buprenorphine, has passed away at age 92. Because of his work (especially with NIDA here in the US), Suboxone, Subutex, and Sublocade exist. RIP to a major force in MAT. www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

This interview is amazing. Dale was literally at the front lines of the Cali cannabis story ever since the decrim movement bottomed out in the 70s and 80s. His insights into the market, yesterday *and* today, are enlightening. Grass Roots even got a little shout out at the end 😁
