The matron in charge of the Galvus household staff is a wizened raisin.

Well, that’s unkind, but Heliodora can think of nothing else when she first meets the housekeeper: two dark round eyes, a head full of raven hair laced with strands of silver like spider-silk, and wrinkles burying most of her features into the patchwork of folded flesh. Luckily, she seems to take no strong opinion of Heliodora when she first presents herself to the door of the city villa. Better to pass through such circles unobserved; Heliodora knows how much the staff of one house talks to those around. Pride in one’s master, jealousy at another’s, payments and secrets rolling around with every hint of power.

As it turns out, this one’s rather jealous of her own.

She walks Heliodora through the house, holding her ring of keys, clinking with every step. The key to the pantry, to the locked drawers and cabinets, to the servants’ staircase, secrets in the architecture and furniture she’s probably forgotten about.

“If you’re like to come here and work for the young master, you’ll need access to the study.”

Heliodora can hear what’s unsaid: nothing more.

“What if I must stay and work late?”

The woman sniffs in a rather derogatory manner: “The valet will let you out if need be.”

Or Heliodora could stay and bed with the master of the house, but she doesn’t know how comfortable she should let herself be. Nothing certain in her relationship to a little lordling who plays in the dark with officers. She ends up taking the copy of the key to the study with a gracious smile, aware that the older woman will end up finding a dozen flaws to mutter about to the little scullery maids and footmen down in the kitchen.
