Taking the form of a mobile factory for the manufacture of electronic textile artworks, Amor Muñoz's Maquila Region 4, or MR4, project sought to make visible the individual women workers who are routinely obscured through the process of outsourced manufacturing,
Muñoz would bike her nomadic project through economically disadvantaged areas of Mexico and offer residents a chance to work for US minimum wage-$8.00 per hour at the time of the project, compared to the standard rate of $1.20 per hour in Mexico-embroider conductive thread into artisanal fabrics to create fully functioning circuit panels. The electronic textiles brought together the main exports of maquilas (factories along the US-Mexico border that offer raw materials and cheap labor for export), textiles, and electronics, while the accompanying time cards are physical reflections of the individual maquila workers who would otherwise remain anonymous.Marilou Schultz

Silicon Valley's Fairchild Semiconductor operated an assembly plant on the Navajo Nation in Shiprock, New Mexico, from 1965 through 1975. During its operations, the Shiprock facility employed primarily Navajo women. The company's promotional materials characterized these women as particularly adept for assembly work due to their
"nimble fingers," honed through generations of intricate jewelry and textile work.
In 1980, another Silicon Valley giant, Intel, expanded its operations to New Mexico.
In honor of the relationship between Silicon Valley technology and Indigenous women weavers, Intel commissioned artist Marilou Schultz to weave a replica of one of its microchips. The commission was technically demanding, requiring substantial experimentation and skill to reproduce the chip's asymmetrical patterns and varied colors. The experience inspired Schultz to continue exploring new technologies through weaving, creating textiles of digital graphs, QR codes, and other microchips. Intel gifted Schultz's Replica of a Chip to the American Indian Science and Engineering Society during its 1994 conference, "Weaving Tradition and Technology, held in San José.Analia Saban

Analia Saban makes visible the hidden infrastructures of the digital age by rendering them through the techniques and materials of older technologies. Using a Jacquard loom, Saban weaves patterns of computer chips and cooling fans from copper wire and linen yarn for her "Copper Tapestries" series. Her "Motherboards" series comprises circuit boards coated in thick printer's ink that paradoxically brings out the boards' intricate surfaces.
Her most recent series, "Flowcharts, continues her concern with the dichotomy between the hand and the machine but expands beyond hardware to uncover the manual work behind artificial intelligence. On a panel covered with white encaustic made of beeswax, resin, and pigment, and layered with black oil stick, Saban has carved a flowchart with instructions for depicting gesture. Her graphic instructions parallel the inputs that structure machine learning-_-from the manual labeling of data fed into training algorithms, to the prompts users enter into generative artificial intelligence tools to produce text, images, and other outputs.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

This is a great insight from a young woman in Canberra on housing and time and multiculturalism www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09...
The woman who feels priced out of spare time

Rosie* is in her 30s and lives in Canberra. She captured the point vividly.

"Housing gets covered as deposits, rates, supply. Living it, the real cost is time. You work the hours the housing demands, in the suburb the housing pushed you to, and what gets sacrificed is the ability to sit down with the people around you.

"Multiculturalism worked in this country when people had time to spend with people unlike themselves. Not policy time — ordinary time. Backyards, front steps, sport, the shops, someone's kitchen. That's how a stranger stops being a category and becomes a neighbour.

"We have spent 30 years pricing that time out of people's lives and now we're surprised that cohesion is fraying and asking what went wrong with our values.

"When people are exhausted and stretched and never in the same room, difference stops being interesting and starts being threatening. That's not a failure of tolerance. It's a failure of time. That's what I'd want people in power to understand."

Thirty evening gowns + a dozen antique sewing machines + original paintings by local artists. A dreamy day out in Skipton, Victoria. #McFarlaneCollection #MechanicsInstitute
A pale grey evening dress with fitted bodice and full skirt.
The owner of the McFarlane Collection writes: “Grey Ball Gown - a challenge - grrrrrh!
Friend, Val Oliver found this gown seven years ago, at ‘Hunter Gatherer’ op shop - Geelong.
It had lot of black dye marks on the satin skirt, perhaps stored near a damp, dark item.
Treatment: bath pre-wash soak. Overnight in weak bleach powder, two rinses, line dry, dye marks visible. Dabbed spots with paste of oxy powder, let sit 2 hours. Soaked two days, stronger bleach, rinse, line dry - still stained.
Using Nellie's Wow stain removing bar, 30% vinegar to water, tamped, soaked, bleached.
Sunshine dry two days - clean. New over skirt, straps made, beads resewn. Happy!”Bodice of the pale grey evening dress. It’s a bustier style, fitted and boned, with a broad halter strap of duchess satin, a darker shade of grey than the rest of the frock. The bodice fabric is probably a matte satin; it’s embellished with transparent beads and a scattering of small colored crystals. The overall effect of the beading is reminiscent of raindrops on a window.Satin waistband and pleated top of the skirt. Squint or zoom the photo to see that the soft tulle is laid over a heavier underskirt of pale grey damask with a subtle swirling design. This layering would move and shimmer elegantly when worn.
