I actually thought they were going to cal them BHNS (Bus a Haut Niveau de Service). That’s what they called it in Liège, and they changed their branding to “Busway” (in French, no joke 🫠)… but at least they don’t pretend to be Trams. On the HNS… I think they are really overpromising and underdel.!

You can just put the address of your first Hotel, they want to make sure you have a "landing place" for the first time you arrive. If you are only connecting flights in the USA, you can just write "Onwards Connection" or "In Transit" with the address of the Airport you're transiting.

ICE vehicles waste a whopping 80% of the energy in their fuel. Electric vehicles are propelled by entirely different mechanisms. Energy enters the vehicle as electricity, which directly powers the drivetrain: EVs need not convert one form of energy to another resulting in much higher efficiency.

I guess these are the kind of things you could ask a Generative AI help with. I would say that doing a shorter TL;DR than this one page summary wouldn't do good to explain the pros and the cons. if the question is what is MERCOSUR, the TL;DR: it's a trade deal with LatAm countries.

By the way, it’s important to note that SNCB/NMBS plans to loose revenue from ticket sales when this system will be introduced (as globally trios will be cheaper) but it hopes to quickly make up the difference by transporting more people through these new attractive tariffs ! {extra/4}

Emeric Massaut @emassaut.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
With this new cheap discount card (giving 40% off + an extra 30% off in weekends) and the cap on tickets if you have this discount card, you will always benefit from the cheapest fare for your journey at the moment you need to travel! I just hope they keep the Youth Holidays (unlimited)! {4/4}

Emeric Massaut @emassaut.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
Today, with the “x-multi” system, one always has to break their head and make quasi actuarial calculations to know what is the cheapest option for a given journey. Especially when you consider weekend-returns or if you don’t know exactly what your future trips might look like… {3/4}
100
Emeric Massaut @emassaut.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
Nevertheless, it will also mean that a lot of journeys will become much cheaper than currently. Furthermore travellers will not anymore need to think: “do I use my standard-multi, do I use a weekend ticket or do I just buy a standard ticket?” {2/4}

Emeric Massaut @emassaut.bsky.social · 19/02/2025
This was announced in Parliament more than a year ago! (Nothing new to me) And it’s a good thing. For a start, youths, pensioners and BIM, the cap on tickets will be as cheap as the current Youth-Multi (5,5€). For adults, the cap will be slightly higher than the std-multi (14€); {1/4}

CO₂ and sulphur dioxide emissions have been decoupled. CO₂ has a very long atmospheric lifetime, accumulates, and causes global warming. While atmospheric sulphur is very short lived (it rains out) and causes regional and global cooling by dimming the sun

Of course he would say that, when he operates Nuclear reactor in a country that overtaxes nuclear reactors, regardless of their production, and subsidises the construction of gas power plants as well as wind farms!

A short article, but important wake-up call: we determine now how bad things are going to get. In my view we either ignore nuclear and dream on about a "100% renewable" future that in reality is backed by loads of fossil fuel, or we actually move to zero […] [Original post on greennuclear.online]

Yes. Crazy. This is an extract of that document… most of the subsidies given to the nuclear sector is just to allow for premature closure like in Germany or the Fessenheim NPP in France!
Extract of the document shared in the previous post. With an important highlight in this text:

“Subsidies for nuclear energy, after being stable for several years since 2015 (averaging at EUR 4.2 billion), reached almost EUR 5 billion in both 2019 and 2020. However, in 2021 they rose further to EUR 7.2 billion, although even after this increase nuclear subsidies still only represented 4% of total energy subsidies in the EU. This increase was mainly linked to financial instruments to compensate for the early closure and decommissioning of nuclear facilities, principally in Germany and France. Compensation schemes are mainly based on paying for electricity that will not be generated (due to the early closure) or for ‘stranded’ assets. In Germany, compensation of EUR 2.4 billion was paid in November 2021, which substantially impacted the total amount of subsidies for nuclear energy in Europe.”

If you believe data of last month (the last dunkelflaute), the wind was barely blowing anywhere in Europe. Electricity price was at an all time high since the Ukraine/Russian gas crisis… There is a limit, and wind isn’t always blowing somewhere!

It was indeed compensated mostly by a stark reduction in consumption, and growing electricity import through interconnections. Biomass also helped contribute and of course wind. The thing is: The growth in wind will have its limits when it reaches ~60% of your consumption!

I find this slightly misleading. It will run for a full fuel cycle as planned, with a planned outage for refuelling and CV1 (check after first cycle), which they will use to also replace the cover. So yes outage might be slightly longer, but it was planned all along! bsky.app/profile/emas...

Emeric Massaut @emassaut.bsky.social · 22/12/2024
It will go offline during the first planned outage (called “CV1” in French) for the first inspection after the first fuel cycle, as it was always planned. And yes they will have extra works to replace the reactor cover, which might only make this outage slightly longer, that’s all!

In a city, bike is probably also the fastest mode of transport. And you can clearly see with this graph as well that a passenger jet aircraft is also the most efficient machine transport on this graph. I wonder where train transport would exactly fall on this graph...

Indeed, in Europe we just use electrical heating for points (switches), even on non electrified lines as the point machines require electricity anyways, so there is (usually) always a source of electricity in the vicinity of switch points. I guess we don’t use gas ones mainly for safety concerns?
