The 80th anniversary of VE Day is around the corner - so it is a good time to pay respect to the sacrifice of thousands of men and women in the Second World War. I took a look at roll of honour data for Dundee and Aberdeen. To emphasise the scale of loss I built a memorial garden using D3.js

"You must comprehend a great deal in your idea of an accomplished woman,” Jane Austen wrote in 1813 and I feel that sentiment persists. That is why I chose to use embroidery - deemed simply "fancy work" during Jane Austen's time despite often taking a lot more skill than this simple #dataviz

I decided to join this month's Journal Dataviz Challenge and visualise the Women in The Nobel Prize with a slightly different format. Each pair of petals represents a single woman who won the prize from 1901 to 2024. The more women winning a year, the flower grows fuller. #dataviz

It's easy to look at our maps from earlier in this series and think that the crashes are fairly evenly distributed - that's why we created a heatmap that highlights the density of crashes around a 1km radius. #ddj #dataviz #datajournalism www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/tran...

A96 accident blackspot heatmap shows where the crashes are clustered
To determine the stretches of the A96 where crashes happen most frequently, our award-winning data team created an accident blackspot heatmap.

The article also takes a closer look at how many crashes happen in rural versus urban sections of the road. Once again QGIS was use to find all the crashes overlapping with or immediately adjacent to settlements defined by Scottish Government Spatial Data on Localities. 3/4

The heatmap is based on the density of crashes within a one-kilometre radius. Larger numbers or more closely clustered crashes within that radius appear with a darker shade, like this one found near Morgan McVeighs restaurant in Insch with three crashes. 2/4 #ddj #datajournalism

We have a racquet heatmap, tennis ball scatter plots, hand drawn Top Trump cards of his top competitors, and a court Sankey - in other words we needed to showcase the UK tennis legend's career in style and we, like Andy, brought our A game. #dataviz #tennis #ddj
Shows grid of charts. Each grid shows Andy Murray's average first serve speed at Grand Slams broken down by round, where the seventh round is the finals while the first is the round of 128.
This Sankey chart breaks down Andy Murray's tournaments on carpet, clay, green and hard courses into wins and loses. Over the course of his career, Murray won 79.07% of his grass court matches or 136 of the 172 matches. Murray won almost three quarters (74.03%) of his hard court matches or 553 of the 747 matches.Top Trump card showing Andy Murray's stats against top faced competitor Novak Djokovic

How have Perth's high streets changed over a year of tracking?
We have been tracking Perth's high streets for a year. Here is how they have changed over the past 12 months.

Ema Sabljak @emasabljak.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
As we look at the changes over the course of the year, we decided to focus on the two most occupied streets - George Street and St John's Place. The latter has remained fully occupied the entire year. #dataviz
Map shows the high street units on George Street and St John's Place. While George Street has more vacant units (indicated with red), it has more than four times the number of units. George Street only has three vacant units and St John's Place has none (occupied shown in blue). These to radial charts compare the composition of George Street (left) and St John's Place (right). It demonstrates that St John's Place consists of solely Food and Drink and a tenth of it is hair and beauty. Meanwhile, the top four categories of shopping, services, hair and beauty, and, food and drink don't even show the full composition of George Street. However shopping is its biggest category.

We have been tracking Perth's high streets for a year now. But how has the Fair City changed over the course of 12 months? The average vacancy rate in Perth increased slightly since 2023, but fell or remained at 0% for five out of nine tracked streets. #dataviz #ddj #datajournalism
Shows two bar charts side by side for December 2023 and November 2024. The bar widths show the total number of units. High Street has the most units but it has fallen from third most vacant to sixth. However there are more streets with vacancy rates of 20% or more than there were in 2023.This slope chart shows how vacancy rates on Perth's high streets fluctuated from census to census over 2024. However this chart highlights the average across all high streets. It started at 16.39% in December of last year and it was 17.71% in November of 2024.
