⚖️ Specialist Courts Announcement 👩🏻‍⚖️ Always great to receive a message like this from a government department, particularly acknowledging that my advocacy played a pivotal part in securing this vital support. More 👇🏼.
Hi Mary, how are you? Hope its been a good start back.
I wanted to give you an early heads-up about an announcement we're making on tomorrow
(embargoed till then), as youve been such an advocate in this area.
We're announcing a £23m package of measures to improve the experience of victims in rape and serious sexual offence cases, including the rollout of specialist RASSO courtrooms. Fulfilling our manifesto commitment! The package includes:

⚖️ A specialist RASSO courtroom in every Crown Court location by 2028, with trauma-informed court staff, better access to special measures, and a consistent best-practice approach across sexual offence trials.

💷 Investment in court buildings to improve the experience for victims, including separate entrances for victims and defendants, upgraded witness and waiting areas, and private spaces for victims to meet family, supporters or lawyers.

👩🏻‍⚖️ A new taskforce, chaired by the Lord Chancellor, to tackle delays and improve the progression of rape cases through the criminal justice system.

❤️ A pilot of a dedicated single point of contact for victims at court, helping people navigate the process alongside existing specialist support services.

I’m so pleased that I could play such an key role in keeping this issue high on the government’s agenda, so that victims of rape and serious sexual offences are able to access the support, and importantly - see the justice they so truly deserve. 🫶🏼

I think we knew as further investigations were carried out into the care women received under the breast surgery services department within CDDFT, some ugly truths would be revealed. The fact that, so far, 20 women have been found to have undergone unnecessary mastectomies is absolutely appalling.

#McStrike Returns – This Time to End, Not Defend, Sexual Harassment at Work
Trade unionists and campaigners are returning to McDonald's Head Office in East Finchley on Tuesday 6th October, joining forces with the End Not Defend campaign to demand that sexual harassment at work is treated as a health and safety hazard, not just an individual grievance. McStrike first brought McDonald's workers together to challenge low pay and insecure work, putting conditions in the fast-food industry on the national agenda. It showed that workers considered ‘hard to organise’ could build real collective power. This time, the message is about safety at work. No one should have to put up with sexual harassment to earn a living.

Each week I hear from people across the City of Durham constituency who are either stuck on housing waiting lists or renting at unaffordable cost to keep a roof over their families head. It is a devastating and familiar reality for many people here in our community. More 👇🏼
A Labour graphic stating Labour is backing the NE to build more than 3000 council social and affordable homesNow, this Government is taking further action to fix it by giving councils the backing to get back to building homes.

We are unlocking £10 billion to deliver 70,000 new council and affordable homes across the country. Crucially, 60% of these will be strictly for social rent, delivering the genuinely affordable, secure housing that local people actually need. 🏡

For the North East, this means an estimated £445 million to help get around 3,400 new homes off the ground.

Everyone deserves a safe, secure place to call home. We’ve got a long way to go to fix the mess we inherited, but going further with our ambition to build council and social housing is exactly what real change looks like.

I’ve long heard concerns re vape shops, betting shops & dodgy businesses on our streets. As MP I’ve worked hard as Co-Chair of the APPG on Smoking & Health & on the Public Bill Committee to ensure more would be done to tackle the scourge of illicit vape shops unashamedly targetting children.
A sign which states Labour is cracking down on unwanted vape and betting shops I know many of you look at your local streets and think ‘who asked for this?’. Well I’m telling you now that you’re not alone and this Labour Government is doing something about it.

We’re giving local people and councils more control over what opens, and tougher powers to crack down on businesses that aren’t good for our communities.

For too long, Westminster has stood by while our high streets declined. I’m pleased to say that ends now

My thoughts on Keir Starmer’s resignation as leader of the Labour Party - and how we move forward from here.
After more than a decade of austerity and economic failure, people longed for change under Labour in July 2024 - and there can be no denying that this Government has achieved a lot in two years. From lifting 500,000 kids out of poverty, the biggest upgrade to workers' rights in a generation, increased rights for renters as well as free breakfast clubs in schools and laying the foundations for the nationalisation of our railways - we should have been winning over hearts and minds in every corner of the UK.However, the unfortunate reality is that due to critical errors made by those at the very top of our party, it became impossible to cut through the relentless onslaught of negativity which built up around a number of poor decisions.Today, we've seen the buck stop with the Prime Minister, as he stood down as Leader of the Labour Party. Keir's resignation gives our movement an opportunity to reflect on the future direction of our party and our country. Labour was founded to be the political voice of working people, to challenge entrenched power, and to build a fairer society. Those values must guide us in the months ahead.Across Britain, families continue to struggle with the cost of living, public services remain under immense pressure, and too many communities feel left behind by an economic model that concentrates wealth and power in too few hands. Our response must be ambitious. We need a Labour Party that is prepared to tackle inequality, invest boldly in public services, strengthen workers' rights further and ensure that economic prosperity is shared fairly across every region and nation of the United Kingdom.Labour's greatest strength has always been its ability to bring people together in pursuit of social justice. As we enter this new chapter, that must remain our purpose. The challenges facing Britain are too great for timidity. Our party must meet this moment with courage, optimism and a determination to finally deliver real change for the many - not the few.

10 years ago today Jo Cox was murdered by a far-right extremist motivated by hatred & division. Jo understood politics should bring people together, not set them against one another. Her belief that we have far more in common than that which divides us was not a slogan, it was a challenge to us all.

I’ve sent urgent correspondence to DCMS Ministers requesting urgent attention is given to the dreadful situation faced by Durham Women FC. What the club has achieved over the years without the backing of a men’s team cannot be understated. It’d be a travesty if they couldn’t continue to operate.
I am writing to express my profound concern regarding the future of Durham Women FC and the reported possibility that the club could cease to exist within the next 20 days if a suitable investor cannot be found. The loss of Durham Women FC would represent far more than the disappearance of a football club. It would be a devastating blow to the City of Durham constituency, the North East region, and the hundreds upon hundreds of women and young girls who look to the club as a source of inspiration, opportunity, and community pride. For many years, Durham Women FC has been one of the leading examples of what can be achieved in women's football outside the traditional structures of the men's professional game. The club has provided a pathway for talented female footballers to pursue their ambitions while demonstrating that success can be built through dedication, community support, and a commitment to developing women's sport. At a time when successive governments have championed the growth of women's football and celebrated the achievements of England's Lionesses, allowing a club such as Durham Women FC to disappear would send an entirely contradictory message. It would undermine years of progress in promoting participation, equality, and opportunity for women and girls in sport.
The impact would extend far beyond the first team. Durham Women FC serves as a role model for countless young girls who can see a clear route from grassroots football to the professional game.
The club's presence demonstrates that elite women's sport can thrive in the NE and provides visible representation that encourages participation, confidence, and aspiration among young people.
The club also contributes significantly to the local community and economy. It attracts visitors to the area, creates employment opportunities, supports local businesses, and strengthens Durham's reputation as a city that values sporting excellence and inclusivity. Its loss would I therefore urge the Government, relevant sporting bodies, and potential stakeholders to explore every possible avenue to support Durham Women FC during this critical period. Whether through facilitating investment discussions, identifying emergency support mechanisms, or bringing together key partners, every effort should be made to preserve this vital community asset.
The next 20 days may determine whether future generations of women and girls in Durham continue to have a local club to support, aspire to join, and be inspired by. Losing Durham Women FC would not simply be the loss of a football team; it would be the loss of opportunity, representation, and hope for countless individuals across the region.
I respectfully ask that this matter receives urgent attention before it is too late.

The theme for Mental Health Awareness week this year has been “Action”. While awareness about mental health has improved drastically in recent years, campaigns and charities are emphasising that real change requires tangible efforts. More 👇🏼
This year’s campaign urges individuals, if they can, to move beyond simply talking and to implement sustainable habits for themselves, their loved ones, and their communities.

The husband of one of my team members is competing in a duathlon today wearing his Boys Get Sad Too t-shirt, a simple statement that carries huge sentiment and could mean the world to someone. I hope it offers a further reminder to the gents who see it that it’s fine to feel the way they do and that it’s equally as fine for them to reach out to someone.

However you spend today, why not message that person you’ve been delaying contacting, take a walk in the fresh air and appreciate the beautiful surroundings we have in County Durham, call a loved one, have a cuppa in your most beloved cafe or watch your favourite film - because good mental health is precious and we owe it to ourselves to try to find ways to keep the ‘black dog’ at bay. 🫶🏼
