I appreciate the couple of bakers whose response to the “bake with a relative” challenge was “my beloved family member! how wonderful! okay let’s see, a job for you in the kitchen, let’s see… okay your job is: stand at the end of the counter and don’t fucking touch anything”

he famously used to say that he would only play criminals and villains if they met a bad end, so presumably at one time he did have that type of clause

a lady with a service dog in training once picked my kid out of a crowd at the playground to ask if he would mind "doing that [sprinting in circles and shrieking] over here near my dog." they do train for this scenario specifically!

oh man I ATE UP collections of "true ghost/UFO/paranormal stories that are definitely true, for real" at that age, it would have been easy to get me into like a slightly more literary version of horror or sci-fi short stories

but now there are infinite virtual registers open all the time, ordering is fabulously effortless, and it takes half an hour to get your chicken nuggets and they're cold
190
Elsajeni @elsajeni.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
and this all seems very convenient, but it's lost track of a key point, which is that waiting in line to order is part of the system that allows the restaurant to serve you quickly. you can only make so many orders at a time, so you only open so many registers, so you can only TAKE that many orders.
1111
Elsajeni @elsajeni.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
-because they now have like 3 or 4 different ways to "skip the line!" when you place your order, right? you can order on the restaurant app, they have a deal with one of the third-party delivery apps, you can order at a kiosk in a different part of the student center, etc.

Elsajeni @elsajeni.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
it's not an AI thing, but I was talking to someone the other day about how the student center is a nightmare to walk through now, there's always a huge crush around the fast food counters where people are waiting like half an hour for their order, and it occurred to me that it HAS to be--

there's a German game company, HABA, that makes really good kids' games - you might have to go to a specialty nerd store but we've also found a couple secondhand. they also make an advent calendar that includes pieces and rules for a couple of basic little games, which was a HUGE hit with my kid.

Pikachu in the Cupola Credit: ESA/NASA – S. Adenot flic.kr/p/2sCdqCr 🔭🧪
A special Astronaut Pikachu plush travelled to the International Space Station to join ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot as part of a collaboration between ESA and The Pokémon Company International.
In this image, Astronaut Pikachu floats inside the Cupola, the European-built observation module that offers spectacular views of Earth and is a favourite spot for astronauts living and working on the Station to watch our home planet pass by below.
The International Space Station orbits Earth around 400 km above it, circling the planet every 90 minutes and treating its crew to around 16 sunrises and sunsets each day – a beautiful sight that has now been shared with Pikachu. Since 2000, astronauts have lived and worked continuously aboard the Station, carrying out science research using the unique microgravity conditions in orbit.
Sophie has spent more than 200 days in space as part of her εpsilon mission, conducting scientific research and completing three spacewalks over the summer to help maintain the orbiting laboratory.
ESA and Pokémon are teaming up to inspire the next generation of explorers. Whether through science or imagination, discovery begins with curiosity.

Sunday Phantom has been doing Phantom: Origins and this weekend we saw the soon-to-be first Phantom in the marketplace finally accepting his destiny: buying 2 pistols, a huge book (for his Chronicles), and a bolt of what surely cannot be purple Spandex
Panels from Sunday's Phantom comic. In the first, a blond man with a pack and canteen is buying a large green-covered book at a market stall, but looking over his shoulder at a woman selling fabric, who's unrolling a bolt of something purple; in the second, he's at her stall, holding up a length of the purple fabric and picturing his family's crest, which is mostly purple with black stripes on part of it.

The Python's ankle monitor control gadget mildly zapped him because it can't tell the difference between "intent to harm Phantom" and "intent to harm Ignis Vindicta," which seems like an obvious flaw in the plan to use the ankle monitor control gadget to make him fight the Phantom
A panel from today's Phantom: Ignis Vindicta (a dork in a grey alien mask), in a control room surrounded by monitors, is looking at the Python's face on the biggest monitor and saying "A warning, Python! Tokoloshe has detected your murderous emotions! The algorithm thinks you mean to harm ME!"

this one for some reason is just generating a notification that says "the pharmacist has received your prescription order!" and then nothing happens. he received it but was not motivated to do anything about it I guess.

Elsajeni @elsajeni.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
I'm grudgingly used to the "to minimize costs, we have only one pharmacist, so you'd better be able to telepathically sense when they're away from the desk because you can't get your prescription then" crap but like. at least usually the prescription does get FILLED, you just can't pick it up.

making a third attempt to get Walgreens to actually FILL this prescription rather than, as far as I can tell, briefly letting the pharmacist look at it and then putting it safely back away in the "your prescriptions" file

A distinctive and goofy piece in my eBay saved search today
An oval platter with a blue and green geometric midcentury modern pattern around the rim, featuring starbursts, hip-looking trapezoids, etc. Unlike most dishes of this style, it also has a totally realistic and traditional scene of a turkey in the woods printed in the middle. There’s also a message under the turkey identifying the platter as a gift, presumably with purchase, from Globe Furniture Co.

when we were doing swim classes our pool bag had: towels; dry clothes to change into; goggles (optional but the public pool is probably super chloriney, you may want them); snacks (kid always got out of the pool ravenous). ours were indoors but add sunscreen if it's outdoors I guess. that's it!

My first collection purchase was the matching gravy boat, sans ladle - I didn’t know at the time it was supposed to have a ladle, and sometimes I consider buying one, but to be honest I think they look worse displayed together
The matching Franciscan Starburst gravy boat, in a sharper photo. It’s a tall, roundish gravy boat rather than a low, canoe-like one, permanently attached to a saucer, with several blue and green starburst designs visible. The handle of a ladle is sticking kind of awkwardly out the spout end, like the gravy boat is sticking out its tongue at you.

Would you guys like to see a terrible photo of a gravy ladle
A terrible photo of a Franciscan Starburst gravy ladle, from an eBay listing. The ladle is a speckled cream color, with a cool yellow starburst where the bowl meets the stem. The photo is generally kind of blurry, and specifically has a weird blurry aura around the ladle so it appears to be glowing.

I painted this little shrine at the paint-your-own-pottery a little while ago and never got a good photo of it while it was sitting empty, but yesterday Zack put Pikachu in there and it’s like it was made for him
A Pikachu model sitting in an arch-shaped ceramic shrine. The shrine is mostly light blue, with a red scalloped border around the niche, a yellow scalloped border around the outside, and some other red and yellow details.

I guess Ignis Vindicta's theory here is that, if the Python doesn't voluntarily put his own ankle monitor control gadget on, he'll just shoot him with drones, but I feel like there are some potential flaws in this plan
Panels from today's Phantom comic. A hovering drone launches an ankle monitor with the sound effect "FRATCH!" and an electronic voice saying "Secure this device, Python..." In the next panel, the ankle monitor bounces off the Python's chest with a "thok!" sound, taking him by surprise.
