E.P.A. Moves to Curb Public Input on Air Pollution Permits for Data Centers

A facility can qualify as a "minor source" while still emitting up to 250 tons of air pollution per year. And when multiple facilities receive "minor source" permits in the same area, the cumulative pollution burden can be significant, especially for already overburdened communities.

Environmental Law & Policy Center @elpcenter.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Many of today's largest industrial developments, including #datacenters, are being permitted as "minor" sources of #airpollution under the #CleanAirAct. But as ELPC Senior Attorney Jessica O'Donnell points out, that's a misleading label.

Illinois families shouldn't be footing the bill for the data center boom. We must hold them accountable for bringing their own new clean energy and paying their fair share. The POWER Act does just that. Let's protect ratepayers and power a cleaner future.

Taking the bus is one of the most affordable and sustainable ways to get around. Hundreds of thousands rely on Chicago's station to access education, healthcare, family, and jobs. Just as we have public amenities for train and plane travel, bus riders deserve that same dignity.
