I’ve met people who were afraid to cry. I always thought it was a strange thing. The first thing you do when you enter this world is cry. Before you spoke your own name, before you took a step, before you learned, fear, love, or loss. Your lungs sang, and you announced your arrival with tears.

Anaïs Boudot

A stark B&W of a small, old stone building (chapel?) set against nearly pure black. The structure has a steep, tiled roof and a rough, weathered stone wall marked by cracks and pale patches. At the center is a tall, rounded arched doorway, its interior completely dark. Low brush or uneven ground gathers along the base, partially swallowing the building. Quiet, isolated, and spectral, as if the chapel is floating in darkness or remembered from a dream.

Erwin Blumenfeld + Tedi Thurman • ‘Mirror’, ‘47

B&W portrait of a person partially hidden behind a a mirror. Their face is split by a dark central line, with one intense eye looking directly toward the camera from the narrow visible space. Their dark hair is neatly swept back, and one hand is raised near their mouth. Sharp and dramatic, with strong contrasts between pale skin, deep shadows, and the dark geometric shapes framing the face.

Gab Minks • Self-portrait

A stark black-and-white photograph shows a young person reclining or lying back against textured, grid-like bedding. The composition is dramatic and theatrical. Their hair is mostly swallowed in deep shadow, forming a large dark shape that spreads across the left side of the image like a cloaked silhouette. Their face is tilted upward toward the viewer, mouth slightly open, with an expression that feels suspended between surprise and vulnerability.
A sharp band of bright light cuts horizontally across the bed, their eyes and upper face, overexposing the forehead and eye area so that the features partly dissolve into white. One visible eye peers out through the glare, giving the image an eerie intimacy. The lower half of the face falls into darkness, with the nose, lips, chin, and cheekbones modeled by heavy contrast. A small beauty mark or dark spot is visible on one cheek.
The person wears a dark sweater over a white collared shirt. The collar is open and slightly rumpled, its fabric catching the light and standing out against the surrounding blackness. One hand rests near the chest, fingers softly curled. The other hand is raised near the right side of the frame, delicately holding a plastic toy T-Rex. The overall mood is fragile, surreal, and haunted. A portrait of a figure caught between darkness and radiance, as though the light itself is touching them with both tenderness and danger.

Nicholas Dominic Talvola

B&W portrait of a bald person posed in a graffiti-covered, tiny, tiled public restroom. They face the camera directly from a low angle, chin lifted and eyes half-lidded, giving the image a cool, defiant, almost statuesque intensity. They wear large dangling hoop earrings made of many fine concentric loops, and a dark sheer collared blouse that blends into the shadowy foreground. Behind them, white square tiles are heavily marked with graffiti tags, scribbles, symbols, and layered black marker tags. A paper towel dispenser sits on the lower left. The harsh lighting creates strong contrast across the person’s face and throat, making the portrait feel raw, nocturnal, punk, and commanding.

Ralph Gibson • Untitled (Woman with statue), ‘74

A stark black-and-white photographic portrait with a moody, dreamlike atmosphere. In the left foreground, a large, out-of-focus sculptural male bust or mannequin head and torso fills nearly half the frame. Its pale surface is softly blurred, with indistinct, worn eyes, a solemn mouth, and shadowed contours that make it feel ghostly and monumental. The figure’s bare shoulder and chest slope toward the lower center of the image, creating a heavy, silent presence.
Behind and slightly to the right of this blurred form, a young woman’s face emerges sharply from deep shadow. She has long, dark, voluminous wavy hair that falls down the right side of the frame, blending into the black background. Her face is lit dramatically from the front-left, emphasizing her smooth forehead, arched brow, straight nose, full lips, and steady, guarded expression. One eye is partly hidden by shadow and hair, while the visible eye looks outward with a calm, intense, almost haunted focus.
The composition feels intimate and theatrical: the soft, faceless mass of the statue or figure in front contrasts with the woman’s sharply defined, living gaze behind it. The image carries a quiet tension, like someone watching from the edge of darkness—tender, severe, and beautifully uneasy.
