Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Tracey and I used to play “The CD Game” back when we had 2000. One would play a track. The other then chose a song with a connection to the first for the beginner to identify. And so on. Connections like “same rhythm guitarist”,”written by Dylan”,”album covers by Hypgnosis” etc. Not competitive. 020
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 10/09/2026You could deal with the Manx contribution to rock music. My input: seeing Freddie & the Dreamers in Douglas in 1964, whilst on holiday with my grandparents. We also came across them making a short film for Top of the Pops in the castle in Castletown. It was never broadcast. 020
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 23/08/2026@footballcliches.bsky.social I’m married to an anaesthetist. In “top operating” surgeons are the striker or 10 who deliver results. Anaesthetists keep the patient alive - the central defender or keeper. Junior docs helping the surgeon, are the wingers. Specialist nurses are 6s, 8s and full backs. 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 21/08/2026@andrewhickey.500songs.com Have you listened to The Guitar Story on BBC Sounds? An interesting account of the role and use of guitars across musical genres. 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 16/08/2026I misread that. I assumed Superman Ill was the prequel to Superman Better. 010
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 17/07/2026The only Zappa album I ever bought was Burnt Weeny Sandwich. I have never been sure why I did. I hope this episode will explain. 020
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 29/06/2026@andrewhickey.500songs.com Bridgewater Hall tomorrow: Classic Albums Live play Led Zep II. Went to see their Beatles White Album, faithful to original, no silliness. Vg encores: Twist n Shout, Hey Jude & Get Back. Interested in choices tomorrow. Maybe Rock n Roll, Dazed & Confused and Kashmir. 010
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 03/06/2026@footballcliches.bsky.social The attached says “Benfica are poised to lose Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid.” One can be “poised” to win but not to lose. www.theguardian.com/football/202...theguardian.comFulham confirm Marco Silva is leaving as head coach amid Benfica interestFulham have announced that Marco Silva is leaving after five years as their head coach 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 05/05/2026@andrewhickey.500songs.com Not sure whether you are a fan of the Cowboy Junkies - my favourite Canadian band. I saw them at the Coro in Ulverston last night. Terrific gig. Their version of Sweet Jane is fabulous. 020
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 05/04/2026In Athens, Georgia over 20 years ago (visited to see the “Automatic For The People” sign) a woman in a shop said to me “I just lurve your ack-sent.” When I said “and I lurve yours too” she looked cross, wrongly suspecting me of the “sarcasm” she’d heard about. 010
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 26/03/2026Only recently have I heard of Royston Ellis. He was no relation to my late father who was Roy Ellis. 010
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 26/03/2026@footballcliches.bsky.social “Goalifications.” Players with lots of goals + assists are “goalifiers.” 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 15/03/2026@footballcliches.bsky.social Sky pundit yesterday lunchtime said, of Coventry’s Matt Grimes: “he’s the midfield glue that keeps them ticking over.” No! Glue is the last thing you’d want in a timepiece. it would have the opposite effect to “ticking-over.” 001
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 09/03/2026Many years ago I took my kids to see the original Star Wars trilogy on 3 successive Saturdays. Best sleeps I ever had, despite the noisy effects and bombastic music. 010
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 01/03/2026The phrase we use is to “become obsessed” which describes a wholly passive occurrence. I didn’t choose or opt to start supporting Coventry City in 1964: it was an accident of birth. The consequent obsession has persisted for 61 years through thin and, currently, thick. 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 01/03/2026I think a true obsession chooses you. Otherwise, it’s just a hobby. 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 01/03/2026@footballcliches.bsky.social An article on football podcasts in today’s Observer says “Football Cliches is for the discerning obsessive.” Can a real obsessive be “discerning?” I reckon a feature of true obsession is a lack of self-awareness of that condition. 110
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 08/02/2026We’ve been the the Opera in Leeds lots of times. Tried the circle and a box but prefer stalls, to get a clearer view of the singers. Apparently the sound quality is best right at the top 🤷♂️ 110
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 31/01/2026The best Marriage of Figaro production I’ve seen, last night @operanorth.co.uk at the Leeds Grand Theatre. Exuberant performances and a terrific orchestra. 171
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 24/01/2026I’ve never thought of it like that. Interesting point. In a similar way, I guess, I watch films more carefully in the cinema than at home, via TV. 010
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 24/01/2026Presumably your vinyl Rs are mostly Rod Stewart. (Yes I know they are filed under S.) 020
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 24/01/2026All my vinyl is from my youth. CDs arrived when I passed 30 and I bought no vinyl after that. CDs easier to use. I’m happy to believe they produce inferior sound to vinyl but I’ve never personally put that to the test. 110
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 24/01/2026We have lots of Rs: Radiohead, REM, Rolling Stones. 110
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 20/01/2026I have a wallet but keep it in a safe place at home as a sort of filing cabinet for cards, licences, etc. When I go out I take just the things I’m going to need. 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 01/01/2026We saw them live in New Orleans in 2003. Terrific gig at a basketball arena which was far from full. A Scottish guy in the audience told me people in NO did not like to pay to attend gigs as there were so many great musicians playing just for tips in bars etc. 020

Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 17/05/2025@footballcliches.bsky.social When did managers start to lead their team up to receive the FA Cup and winners’/losers’ medals. My memory might be wrong but surely that hasn’t always happened. I thought they followed their teams up the Wembley steps. 010
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 21/04/2025@ianleslie.bsky.social I loved the audio version of John and Paul. I paused listening, to play each song. The book confirmed my belief that they were equal music geniuses. And that Paul’s “it’s a drag” comment after John’s death was the self-defence of a traumatised friend. Terrific work Ian. 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 20/04/2025That knowledge will also ease the pain when we lose the Play-Off final on penalties, following an outrageous decision to disallow a perfectly good goal in extra-time. 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 20/04/2025I simultaneously am really keen for my team (Cov) to be promoted, knowing that we would be relegated after one humbling season and that the football will be far less entertaining than the Championship. This mental confusion is called cognitive polypahsia. 100
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 11/04/2025I’m ready with my response to a bill of 19.66: “shopping’s going home.” 000
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 10/04/2025I’ve had hayfever for years. I take non-prescription tablets Allevia during the pollen season. Really effective and no tiredness side-effects. 010

Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 20/03/2025I’m disappointed that no-one pointed out that the Leicester defence could not “squirrel” the ball away because they are absolute Foxes. 030
Roger Ellis @ellisroger.bsky.social · 16/03/2025@footballcliches.bsky.social This was in Sunday’s Observer. Is 100 “goal involvements” a true “milestone”? 000
