One day somebody in the crowd identified me. Standing behind me was a woman, with lips blue from the cold, who had, of course, never heard me called by name before. Now she started out of the torpor common to us all and asked me in a whisper (everyone whispered there): (2/3)

During the tech bros' relentless pushing of AI for their own enrichment, at the cost of humanity's impoverishment, hold on to this- the preface from Anna Akhmatova's 'Requiem: "In the terrible years of the Yezhov terror I spent seventeen months waiting in line outside the prison in Leningrad. (1/3)

To adapt yesterday's trend, do you all have an obvious favourite photo of your cat? Because I sure do, and this one gets printed out for the front of every homemade birthday/father's day/mother's day card we make for each other in my family.
The world's most beautiful grey tabby cat is caught mid-hiss in a photo on the front of a blue homemade card.

Pleased to announce a new publication in this truly excellent volume patiently edited by Katie Walter. Think I can officially say I'm a 'late medievalist' as well as 'early modernist' with this one! Plus pictures!! Just what is Joseph up to in that corner? Find out in '(S)pacing Faith'...

#nationalpoetryday and this one caught me a few years back: a rich world of relationships, spaces, and paying attention to what and where we are. 'Attention' by Nick Laird published in the New Yorker in 2023.

Damn - just missed this at BOV. I have no idea why I didn't get tickets... I love the company's work and actually chaired a post-show talk for Paradise Lost a few years back. I think two years of reviewing Shakespeare has fatigued me - kicking myself now though!

“Universities have managed staff costs significantly below inflation,[between 2016-17 and 2023-24] increasing only 14% compared to the 41.2% increase in RPIX [measure of inflation]” Substantial real terms pay cut, which continues a trend existing years before that…

I would have seen Simon Coates - it was in London in '94 or '5. I wonder how many early modernists that single production helped to produce?

Life-changing for me too on my A-level course also. Hurrah for engaged drama teachers. I didn't realise it was Tom Hollander!

We sometimes share our top non-Shakey early modern plays, but rarely our bottom. I'll start... I don't think I'm ever going to be able to enjoy A Game at Chess, the Spanish Tragedy, or Bartholomew Fair.

incorporate and honour their brilliance...that's the part of scholarship where we think through other people. That's our brains travelling through their brains to get to where our brains need to go. Or something. Also possible the frantic writing has driven me over the edge.

With the possibility of a full draft of a book just starting to peek over the horizon (though still much, MUCH to do) something strikes me: all that reading we do at the start of a project, all that worrying that other people are saying what we want to say but better, that sense that we must
