New episode of What to Carry, What to Burn is out today! It tells the story of José Salvador Alvarenga, a shark fisherman who drifted across the sea for over a year in a small open boat after his motor broke. This story, and José’s resilience, absolutely blew my mind.

Close call tonight. Unwarned thunderstorm dropped a microburst right next to the highway in front of me. Oncoming truck rolled, thankfully mine did not. Driver will be okay.

Less than a minute later as the POV truck has gotten closer to the storm, the rain shaft is now a curved shape bowing out at the bottom, a textbook sign of a microburst. Though the storm isn't over the interstate, rain can be seen getting blown across the road ahead.

The microburst is now blasting horizontally across the road in front of my truck from left to right, and a pair of headlights can just barely be seen through the rain as a truck in the distance is blown into the median.

Moments later, things have largely calmed down, though the evening sky is an unsettling green color. I've pulled over next to the wrecked truck, which is laying on its side in the median.

Made a little fuckup with a trailer yesterday and after beating myself up about it all day I took today off to get it fixed instead of leaving it for someone else and I'm glad I did because getting it fixed included learning it only broke because someone else broke it first and fixed it badly.

Based on the NTSB preliminary report on N249CP, the evidence is fairly strong: this medevac plane probably wouldn't have crashed, and its 4 crew would still be alive, if the military hadn't been jamming GPS that night.
