Every year, a woman disappears in the forest. Every year, Irene’s ailing detective father fails to find them before another is taken. Desperate to save his reputation, Irene ventures into the forest to hunt for clues, finding a cursed king with an ultimatum: marry him or the forest will kill her.

Taken centuries back to a version of their kingdom frozen in time, Irene discovers that all of the missing women accepted King Peter’s deal and drowned in the river soon after. To make it home, she’ll have to convince Peter to break the curse’s cycle.

Yet the forest wants blood, and it won’t tolerate disobedience. History must repeat itself.

With the forest taking a life each night Irene remains alive, she and Peter hurry to unravel her visions of the forgotten first bride and unearth the story at the root of the curse. But when he starts to remember his real life in Irene’s time, she’ll have to determine why the curse chose him – and if she’s willing to sacrifice the man she’s falling in love with to survive.
