I agree with this, but also… there’s something so spiritually impoverished and sad about it. Like, Aaronsons ”signs and wonders“ are things that AI has done that are impressive by human standards, but pathetically small potatoes for something he wants to literally deify.

It was my first week of fourth grade. The teachers were clearly scared, but what was actually happening kept trickling in bit by bit, and par were picking people up. When my carpool came, we sat in traffic and could see the smoke from the Pentagon.

Not to be unkind, but this professor is being foolish. You give an assignment requiring conversational and social skills to *this particular cohort of students* and when they struggle, assume the culprit must be AI?

Possibly unpopular opinion, but… that stuff doesn’t have to start in high school, or even college! I’m a millennial, and did absolutely no partying in high school, some in college, but 23-4 was the real *start* of my Shenanigans Years

Imagine, if you will, a wealthy couple with a Park Slope brownstone. They live there most of the year, but spend summers at their mountain house in the Berkshires, over the MA border. Literally nobody says they shouldn’t vote in NY—and this is the same thing.

This ties into a weird Online norm I’ve seen where insecurity is bad, but admitting to certain flaws is downright taboo. Say you’re lazy, say you’re struggling, say you’re messy, but if you admit to being uncool, overeager, or anything but smoking hot, how DARE you.

Fast fashion isn't aimed at the poorest (though they certainly can and do buy such things). It's aimed at people who can afford to constantly buy clothes; people who could buy fewer higher-quality items and collectively they don't.

This is true, but I think it’s easier to talk about when you add quantity into the mix. I’ve read SHEIN discourse, and a big chunk was about how “you can get 10 SHEIN dresses for the price of one high quality one.” But 10 dresses aren’t a need! People just like volume!

Most of the land in most farm counties is owned by 1-5 families. They run the place like their own personal kingdoms. There is SO much resentment and straight-up fury about this in rural areas. The fact that no political party's even really trying to speak to it is wild.

I’ve seen those opinions, and frankly, I think they’re inane. Mobility can mean many different things—often, it amounts to “fleeing.” Pretending that only people privileged enough to move into an ideal environment are capable of/should move is dumb.

The pink fairy armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus) is just this little guy. The smallest of the armadillo family, they live in the deserts of Argentina, burrowing through dry sand with giant paws, almost as fast as a fish can swim. The armor is greatly reduced, but the pink fairy has THICK FUR.
Pink fairy armadillos (or pichiciegos) are found in the warm sandy plains of Argentina. These armadillos prefer to burrow in very dry soil. They leave their burrows if it is moistened by rainfall. These animals often burrow near anthills, so that they can be close to their food source. The pink fairy armadillo generally lives by itself. The animals stay in their burrrows during the day and feed at night. They are remarkable diggers. The pink fairy armadillo is the smallest member of the armadillo family, measuring only about five to six inches in length. It is also the only armadillo in which the dorsal shell is almost separate from the body. Baby armadillos resemble their parents, but their shells do not completely harden until they are full grown

Little addition to “picky eater discourse”: a lot of alleged pickiness among kids is just different taste from the adults in their lives. Like, okay, your kid hates peas, have you tried spinach? What’s that? YOU hate spinach? Picky indeed.

Tbh I think a problem considering "picky eater" history is it often doesn't go back far enough. If you are hype to eat monotonous, bland, uniformly textured food every single day when for most of the population, 90% of your food is gruel, that's actually a significant survival advantage.

Reinventing the Wheel: The Ferris Wheel as Symbol of Urban Prosperity
This is the third entry in our May series, Cities at Play. By Dr. Ellery Weil In 2005, the London skyline faced a threat to one of its iconic features, in the form of an eviction notice. The target? The London Eye. The Ferris wheel, which had been constructed in honor of the new millennium, had found itself caught up in a rent dispute with the owners of the land on which it stood.

Actually, that may be an offshoot of an even bigger one: the idea, which many people clearly hold, that being conventionally attractive is a high moral good, regardless of any benefits it brings you.

The latter part is something I think about a lot in the context of war. Like, for centuries, people killed and died in the name of rulers they not only didn’t choose, but wouldn’t physically recognize off the street! And that was normal, and now it’s insane!

This is a fantastic thread, but I do also think that a lot of the weirdness about clothing in general and the Met Gala specifically (an event I broadly like, btw) is about the body. Metalwork is masc coded. Jewelry gets it worse than clothing.
