Foster cat progress: Lovie only lets me pet her when she's eating. Which isn't great, but it's something. Today, for the first time, Lovie rushed over to yell at me about the daily wet food allotment while I was opening the can. I am become Foodbringer, Bringer of Food
My hand petting a dilute tortoiseshell cat who is bent over a paper plate. Her sister's big gray butt is also in frame as she eats facing the other way.

Not fat but short & extra hideous so honorable mention
Leeta and Rom from Deep Space Nine. Leeta is a smokin' hot Bajoran babe which means she looks exactly like a human except for a couple tiny ridges on the bridge of her nose. Rom is a Ferengi, a short guy with a huge bulbous head, giant ears, a big, wrinkly nose, and horrible snaggly teeth (not pictured). Their romance is probably the most wholesome thing on the whole show. Go watch DS9 if you didn't immediately recognize these two because it fuckin rules

Forgot I took these pics at the dog park lmao. Griddle instantly learned to jump through the hoop a few weeks ago because this guy, Bob, was handing out treats for it, & now every time he goes near the hoop he gets swarmed with dogs. Griddle has also tried to go home with Bob & another Treat Haver
A man in a gray hoodie & a big floppy hat standing next to an agility hoop, surrounded by 6 dogs with a seventh walking away. Griddle is one of the six. A huge chocolate-brown-and-white Newfoundland is standing with her body halfway through the hoop. All 6 are intensely focused on the man.Griddle sitting very correctly, looking up at gray hoodie man with pure adoration in his eyes while completely ignoring my attempts to get his attention for this photo

Rode that high outside to sand the big door to the chicken coop, which has swelled slightly over time & stopped closing securely. Couldn't get the bolt to line up with the bar anymore so I pulled it off & jury-rigged a fix. Now the bar holds the door shut & the hole holds a handle to yank it open.
An expanse of light-blue-painted wood. A simple deadbolt holds the door shut. The thing that would normally hold the deadbolt when it's engaged has been removed & turned sideways to hold a carabiner with a leather strap attached to it.

If she can feel safe & enclosed, maybe she'll relax. But I'm going to have to put Nova in a carrier before I attempt this. I hope I haven't completely ruined our friendship. She's such a sweet little cat when she doesn't think I'm murdering her sister. I'm so tired I have tunnel vision. Tomorrow

Embodied Exegesis: Transfeminine Cyberpunk Futures ed. Ann Leblanc. This is the good weird shit I love. I don't think there was a single story or poem I didn't enjoy, and a rip-roarin' introduction to boot. Recommended if you like cyberpunk & posthuman stuff.

Very busy day yesterday. I took the morning off to volunteer at a preschool for underserved children with some coworkers. We sanded & painted a bunch of very beat-up cubbies for the children. Idk why they wanted them black but the paint might have been donated? Idk. Anyway they look good as new 💪
A long classroom mostly covered in drop cloths and painting supplies, with several large blocks of cubbies where kids hang their coats/backpacks/etc. drying for their second coat.

Doing mystery pepper roulette for lunch, which is where I slice up all the garden peppers currently in our fridge, dip them in hummus, & find out in real time whether they're spicy or not. First one was a Serrano lol (I did leave the labels in the pots but the sun bleached them all off)

Truly we are run by the stupidest among us. And the senator wouldn't even apologize after embarrassing himself in front of everyone lol
Here's the latest.
Senate Republicans assailed Jack Smith, the former special counsel who charged Donald J. Trump with criminal offenses after his first term, but their attacks on Tuesday were undercut by what appeared to be a remarkable error of mistaken identity: the Atlanta Hawks for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Finally have an update on the foster cats. Nova has decided we're fine and is a lap cat now. Lovie is still fucking furious. I petted her for a little while last night while she was cornered in her cave bed, & she held still for it, but hissed the whole time. Here's Nova being cute at least

I guess I'm just doing a cottagecore thread now so here's the pile of fucked up cabbage plants we yanked out of the garden this morning. The chickens have been going at it off & on & I expect it to be gone tomorrow.
A dry expanse of bare dirt with some rocks, the edge of the steel fire pit, some dirty buckets and plant pots, one chicken standing around, and a pile of ratty old cabbage leaves & stalks.

Speaking of using more eggs, we hit 7 dozen on the counter so I'm now starting to freeze them for winter when the egg factory goes into low-power mode. Exactly 2 dozen whipped eggs fits perfectly into the huge mini muffin tin Ernest got at a garage sale. We'll see how easily they come out.

I've more or less got the gluten-free bread recipe down, now, so I'm starting to experiment. The Bob's Red Mill gluten-free flour seems to give me a fluffier loaf, and honey makes it lightly sweet. This time I added an extra egg and - surprise! It's like a fucked up challah, which I used to love.
This is maybe the prettiest, fluffiest gluten-free bread I've ever made, & it tastes great. Two slices on a small plate with butter on top.

These cats still won't let me touch them after having days to decompress. Nova screams at the top of her lungs if I try to touch her. Lovie just acts feral. I'm going to have to move them to a smaller space than Ernest's office to try to get them comfortable.

So anyway this is how we figured out Ernest's office door is loose right now (changes with the seasons as the entire old wooden house flexes). This is my jury-rigged solution for the night. Better setup in the morning, or maybe I move them upstairs, we'll see. Cat pics when they calm down.

Ok, got some non-expired Oatly & it's not terrible. Less creamy & oddly sweet given the ingredients list. But probably the closest I'm going to get. It's not like I'm drinking big glasses of it every day, it's performing fine in coffee, & I'll try it with some rice Chex sometime soon. Panic averted

Dog park was wild today. Griddle got adopted by a pair of new golden retriever-mix puppies named Daisy and Duke. I confirmed with someone in the know that the big end-of-season dog swim hasn't happened yet and they haven't set a date. Last year it was apparently the beginning of October.

#33: Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Warped by K.W. Jeter. Started for Star Trek Day. First novel in the DS9 continuity, so the author took many stabs in the dark. Don't hate it but I don't know that it really held together. Leans heavily on Bajoran mysticism in a way that's clearly drawn from Season 1.

Got the bed! It was a huge hassle to take apart, get out of their house, cram into the car, transport 5 blocks or so in 2 trips, and then drag up to our third floor with minimal help. I need 7 naps before I can put the thing together. Not to mention I have to move some furniture to place it.

Ok. Cracked a little over 30 pits, three of which had double kernels, which I just learned is a thing! Discarded three kernels as clear duds, leaving me with about 3 dozen seeds for this experiment. Wrapped in a wet paper towel, into a ziplock, into the fridge, see you after Christmas.

My halfhearted attempts to sprout some peach pits from like 2 years ago were stymied by me letting them dry out until they were no longer viable. This year I'm gonna take the kernels out & cold-stratify those instead. This is one summer of peaches & nectarines.

Ah son a bitch ICE was in town this morning & I'm only finding out well after the fact. It's hard to organize against these quick, surgical strikes, which of course is the point. A government at war with its people using guerilla tactics.
Screenshot of a FB post with the poster's name cropped out. They're saying "I saw it happen and they caught at least six." Ernest harvested a couple more cabbages and some leeks today for fancy Sunday dinner. It feels very cool to be able to walk outside and pick stuff from the garden. I suppose that if it didn't, it wouldn't be worth the effort. But we've never grown either of these before & they turned out great.
