I had so much fun sharing #CelticTales in the @edbookfest.bsky.social schools programme a couple of weeks ago. The pupils had splendid ideas for monster-defeating stories, and asked lots of excellent questions! (illustrations and cover art by @elisecillustration.com ) @discoverkelpies.bsky.social
A white woman with silver hair, wearing white facemask, plus black vest and trousers, kimono top with green and blue pattern on white, and silver shoes. She is standing on a stage, in front of a white background with colourful patterns framing the Edinburgh International Book Festival logo. To the left of the stage is a screen showing a bright illustration of a cloaked woman waving a wand and four children in front of her in the process of turning into swans. The caption underneath says: ‘and this rather nasty lady at the top here is cursing four children’. The woman on stage is gesturing to the screen, but talking to the audience. A white woman with silver hair, wearing black vest and trousers, and kimono top with green and blue pattern on white, smiling and holding an open book. The book cover shows a black horse leaping across top of the cover, a seal wearing golden crown at the bottom, a wave of seawater curving between them. Title in green foil, centred between the horse and the seal: Celtic Folk and Fairy Tales, Magical Stories from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany. Two names in yellow at the bottom of the cover: Lari Don and Elise Carmichael. Behind the woman is a tent with the words ‘Courtyard Theatre’ visible. White woman with silver hair, wearing white facemask, plus black vest and kimono top with green and blue patterns on white. She’s sitting at a table covered in black fabric, with a black banner behind saying Waterstones. There is an open book on the table, with the title Celtic Folk and Fairy Tales in green writing. There are some coloured sharpies on the table, and a messy pile of yellow post-it notes. The woman is signing the book with a blue pen.

I had the great pleasure of illustrating the hard cover for the @faecrate.bsky.social edition of Allison Saft's new book "Immortal Game"! Such a fun book and project ❤️
Black and white illustration. The two main characters of Immortal Game face each other over a chess board. One is a human, one is a fae princess. They are sitting in a ruin covered in vines.

“Now why is it not opt-in?” said Minton. “That’s what everybody here is spamming in chat. I get it. ‘Let me opt in versus making me opt out.’ There’s an honest answer, and I think most of you can probably appreciate this: If it was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That’s honestly the answer.”

This was followed by a torrent of all-caps chat responses that included “THEN DON’T ROLL IT OUT,” “SO WHY EVEN DO IT,” and “IF NO ONE WOULD OPT IN THAT MEANS NO ONE WANTS IT.”

open book on wooden table, with full-page illustration showing a tall woman, dressed in blue and green robes, with long auburn pleats, holding a baby in a blue blanket in her left arm. She is standing in the mouth of a cave, and her right arm is reaching up to hold back a curtain of foliage. She is looking down on girl and a woman at her feet, who are dressed in browns and beiges. The tall woman and baby are glowing, beautiful, magical. The folk at her feet look drab and peely wally by comparison. Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc. If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

A three part commission done for @lemongrace.bsky.social 💙
Three siblings visit their mother's resting place at different times of the day.

The first image depicts a night elf with long white hair in a bun and a long braid, with pale skin, wearing a long white dress and semi transparent cape, carrying a bouquet of flowers in her arm. She is facing an ornate sarcophagus placed in the middle of the room with a gentle expression on her face. Pale morning light fills the room from the entrance, coming in from the left of the viewer.

The second image depicts a well built night elf with pale skin and white hair, and a blue tattoo around his left eye and cheek. He is wearing dark blue clothes with a dark cape over one of his shoulders. He has a solemn expression on his face as he stands looking down on the sarcophagus in the middle of the room, a single blue rose held in his left hand. A bouquet left by his sister lays on the sarcophagus. Warm light comes in from the entrance at noon.

The third image depicts a night elf with white hair and equally pale skin sitting in front of the sarcophagus on the floor. She is wearing a black cloak over her dark clothes and armor. She sits with her knees pulled up to her chest and head resting on her knees with her arms wrapped around herself, distraught. The offerings from her siblings, a bouquet of flowers and a rose sits on the lid of the tomb. The light is a cold blue coming in from the entrance at night.

The scene is set in an ancient mausoleum with an ornate sarcophagus at its center. The room is old and has cracks running across the floors and walls, and vegetation is starting to creep across the room. There are blue candles around the sarcophagus, and blue glowing lights hanging from the ceiling.

It’s #WorldBookDay and it’s St Piran’s Day, the patron saint of #Cornwall. So it’s the perfect day to share a page of #Cornish #piskies! Beautifully illustrated by @elisecillustration.com, for a Piskie Market tale in our Celtic Folk and Fairytales. #StPiransDay #CelticTales #kidilit #kidlitart
An open book, showing a page with a couple of lines of text visible at the top, and below an illustration of market stalls, filled with flowers and shoes and loaves of bread. The stalls are brightly coloured – blue, yellow, red – and the whole scene is cheerful. As well as people buying and selling at the stalls, there is a grey-haired woman sitting down telling a tale to a group of children gathered at her feet. The flowers and grass towering over the stalls indicate that the stalls and people are tiny: it’s a piskie market.
The text visible at the top reads: “The goods for sale were tiny. The stalls were tiny. The people buying and selling were tiny. Jago was looking at a piskie market. A market for the tiny magical folk who live hidden in the quiet corners of Cornwall.”
Shiny book on wooden table, black horse leaping across top of cover, seal wearing golden crown at bottom, wave of seawater curving between them. Title in green foil, centred between the horse and the seal: Celtic Folk and Fairy Tales, Magical Stories from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany. An old study of Tiepolo's Antony and Cleopatra, at the National Gallery here in Edinburgh! I need to post more so I'm going through the backlog. This was a fun little study to do in the museum, although I was not used to people coming right up behind me to look over my shoulder. 😅
A pencil drawing/study of Tiepolo's "Antony and Cleopatra". Mark Antony, in ceremonial dress and a large feather plume on his helmet, bends down to kiss Cleopatra's hand as she arrives off her boat into Rome. They are surrounded by onlookers and sailors.

Dude regularly works for Disney, DreamWorks, Netflix and CN so speculate away. But this sucks no matter which studio is doing it, and gross to think some major movie this year is running with a plagiarized image from ChatGPT.
Post from Art Director Bill Robinson on LinkedIn saying:

Welp, it finally happened. I was hired to work on a MAJOR live action Hollywood film (and I mean it’s one of the biggest anticipated films of the year). They needed a small animated sequence and wanted a character designer. I was handed a ChatGPT image and told “make it different”. I did - I spent hours finessing the design into something better and more specific for the character in the film. Waited a week for notes - then was told they got clearance from legal to use the original AI image instead. No need for any further work. This is what the director wanted.

What are we doing as a society? What’s the endgame here? Replace every human until we are all homeless? I just don’t get it. If a major Hollywood film with a huge budget doesn’t see the need to work with real artists, is there any hope left?
