Reading about it, it's interesting it gets compared to Titane. Which, I suppose yes, they do have the car-related fetish thing in common, but they feel very different. I didn't like Titane at all.

also goddamn I can't believe this film was shown in theatres back in the day, that would NEVER happen now. which is depressing to think about.

Crash is about people who have a fetish for car crashes, btw.

I watched Crash last night + one of the interviews that came with the Criterion Collection DVD. It was striking how all of the censorship and backlash that happened towards the film is the same as what's going on now with independent art. The film an interview were fascinating.

every time I watch another Cronenberg film it's like 'this man gets it'

I ended up watching it last night and one of the interviews that came on the Criterion Collection DVD! It was a really fascinating film & interview, I've never seen anything quite like it.

then we are actually up to 4 people (including myself) who are interested in this! Which is actually 200% more than I was expecting.

Yesssss, soon I should have time to start playing around with it (writing anyway) >8) I should also theoretically have any current art obligations sorted out by the end of November soooooooo heheeeee

Plus also takes some pressure off in the sense that you don't have to build everything from scratch and can just play with someone else's dolls for a while. I love my OCs and stories, but they are more work and can be more mentally taxing at times because I care deeply about portraying their stories

THANK YOU!!! Right?? It is really cool. I don't think I really fully understood the appeal of making doujinshi until this and now it's like "I GET IT NOW". It really is about just you and a few friends having fun going feral over your extremely specific blorbo niche.

I WILL TRY MY BEST. And hopefully I'll manage because I definitely get way too up in my head about stuff and hold myself back that way. I SHALL JUST HAVE FUN😤

That's the thing too, just letting myself be ambitious with it if I want to be. Basically just doing what I want to do and have fun with rather than what I "should" do.

LAUcifer, Sommelier of Gothic Male Vintage @elegantlab.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I'm going to try really hard to keep it in the low expectation Fun Zone and to be fine with it if it's long/not tight storytelling. Tbh, I think it'd be really good for me since I get way too stressed out about making "good" work. Plus the audience for this is so small it's less intimidating.

Thank you, I truly do appreciate it. I've got some other art obligations I'm wrapping up atm, but I'd like to actually start working on it more concretely soon. I kept putting it off because it'll be long-ish and I "should" do shorter stuff first, but whatever. It's for fun.

Right?? I watched a few films and was like "ok, but which of my prospective projects can I actually apply this inspiration to" and the answer was very easily the doujinshi.

THANK U FOR BEING MY HYPE MAN FOR THIS. srsly just knowing one other person is interested has kept me from giving up on the concept.

I'm probably going to watch Crash tonight, actually! I'm late to the party with watching any of his work.

I watched this last weekend! The head explosion practical effect was so well done.

LAUcifer, Sommelier of Gothic Male Vintage @elegantlab.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Agreed! I don't find shock for the sake of shock particularly interesting in horror. It just feels like a cheap scare.

(I'm sorry, I'm in a cronenberg kick and I feel like his films have helped me make sense of how to combine various elements I've wanted to have in my work but didn't know how to string together)

twilight of the dark master doujinshi with some cronenberg flavor I am probably one of two people who want this and I will make it happen eventually

It took me like 4 or 5 pages and a bunch of sketches, but I finally drew the bad guy consistently XD He is supposed to look fairly boring, with inner stinky evilness leaking out.

I think, too, is that despite the horror/disturbing/sexual content, he's always trying to say something and it feels genuine, it doesn't feel like it's there for shock value.

Mmm, I guess I mean his own type of style. Like certain elements show up in most of his films that I've watched. I've only watched 4 so far, but they all have some amount of body horror, there's usually some amount of horny or sleaze, psychological aspects, practical effects, etc.

I can absolutely see people hating it, it's probably rather polarizing. But I really liked it.

Yeah! I enjoy the range I've watched so far, but also like how he has a noticeable style throughout.

Answered in my other post! It's mindfucky and explores a twin relationship in a way I haven't seen before, since it's Cronenberg it's also horny and has a tiny bit of body horror. It's actually based on real events, specifically a 70s Esquire article's interpretation of the IRL events.

LAUcifer, Sommelier of Gothic Male Vintage @elegantlab.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
The Fly is fairly straightforward monster body horror, Videodrome is weird horny bdsm social commentary on corporations/capitalism. Dead Ringers is fucky psychological codependent twin doctors.
110
LAUcifer, Sommelier of Gothic Male Vintage @elegantlab.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I can see why The Fly is seemingly the most popular overall. It feels the most mainstream of the ones I watched. I liked it, but I liked his works that get a little weird and psychological more. I liked Videodrome and it's what started me on my Cronenberg kick (though I like Dead Ringers more).

Tbh, I'd never watched any of his films until a few months ago. The only one of his movies I was aware of was The Fly. Videodrome had been on my to-watch list for years, but I didn't realize it was one of his til I checked it out from the library and it's what got me interested in his works.

LAUcifer, Sommelier of Gothic Male Vintage @elegantlab.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
My library doesn't have Rabid, so I'll have to find it elsewhere (his oldest I've watched so far is Scanners). I actually have Crimes of the Future checked out from the library atm, so I'll probably watch that tonight or tomorrow! I have put Existenz on hold >8) Thank you!

LAUcifer, Sommelier of Gothic Male Vintage @elegantlab.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
YES!! Watching Videodrome a few months ago was what got me on a Cronenberg kick. I'd never watched any of his stuff before and Videodrome was exactly my flavor of psychological horny body horror, so I've been working through his stuff.

Yess, I've been meaning to pick it up since you mentioned it in your email (sorry I haven't replied to it!!). I've put it on hold at my library and will read your newsletter after watching >8)
