OK OKAAAY I'm posting way too many selfies here for a 46 yr old man. I just gotta get it out of my system a bit, since I avoided doing that for a long time. Please bear with me. I'll get back to posting manga stuff again sometime 😘

PPS: Not to add on TOO much to the vain-train here, but I made a post about this on Instagram too & thought I'd add some extra photos from that here. 1. Me yesterday, wearing one of my favorite shirts, that I got when I was 26. 2. Me in 2003 & now, the same weight (can't believe that shit!)

Me, yesterday evening. I was wearing a black shirt covered in Japanese family crest iconography, black & white Adidas jogging pants, neon yellow-green Adidas running shoes, holding a big-ass bright blue Stanley 40z mug (I swear, I'm not advertising for either of these... Got the Stanley dirt-cheap at Marshalls. I'm a bargain hunter. But that said, I have bought an obscene enough amount of Adidas stuff over the years that maybe they SHOULD sponsor me, haha.) Also featured: green hair. I'm standing in front of my garage. (The inside of which is very cluttered with stuff from when I cleaned-out & sold my parents' house, but you can't see that here because the door is closed.)

Are you still reading this? Bark once for yes or meow twice for no.

Me in 2003, and me now. I'm basically the same weight now that I was then. That blows my damn mind, since I had basically given up on ever being that size again. Hope it stays. My body is already trying to fight it, but I gotta stay stable...

I'm tempted to say MJ's Thriller video - & that did give me the willies as a toddler - but I also remember a movie where a guy got shot & fell down a set of stairs, & I was really unsettled by it since the guy looked kind of like my dad. 😨 So I guess that one's less spooky-scary & more personal!

Ok JK, you get context. Today was the “Apple Butter Festival” in Holland OH. Went last year too, but it was right after surgery, so I couldn’t eat anything. Rectified that today! Here is the aforementioned fancy chicken:

A fancy chicken I saw today. The feathers on its head remind me a little of David Lynch’s famous hairstyle.

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 04/10/2026

Random things from today: * Ate food from Schlotsky's Deli for the first time in ages today & dear lord that reuben was great. * Had an apple cider donut today & 🤤 * Saw a chicken with a David Lynch bouffant. * My son & I buried each other in a grain bin filled w corn kernels (NO CONTEXT FOR YOU!)

Talk about a dream project. (Desperately wishing I could have lettered it!)

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

PS: A year ago, if you’d told me that one day I would actually *enjoy* exercise, and feel antsy when I don’t get to the gym on schedule, I would have looked at you like you had two heads, haha. Weird how much one’s outlook on stuff can change due to some good ol’ endorphins!

I don’t talk too much about the gastric bypass on here, but if anyone’s been thinking about it, or some other similar surgery, please done hesitate to DM me and I’ll try to give you whatever help and info I can. It’s a scary thing to consider, but so worth it.

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

I’m not at my goal yet (whatever that even is a things shift the more I learn about the human body) and to be how at, I’ve backslid a little lately on the food part, but gonna try to keep my discipline up as much as I can. I feel the healthiest I’ve been since my early 20s. Feeling pretty good!

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

Today was the last day of the special gym program I’ve been doing at ProMedica for the past 8 months. Also, last week marked one year since my gastric bypass. Down 75lb since then and 121 since my highest weight. Gotta switch to a cheaper gym but gonna keep this going, hopefully for good! 💪

A before (October 2024) and current (today, October 3rd, 2026) comparison of me. Full-body pic. Down around 120 lbs since that first pic. About half of that thanks to my gastric bypass surgery and half due to me finally getting into exercise. Feels good!

Oh how I long for a summer that’s not totally dominated by deadlines. (But also pays enough that I can live.)

What do you mean it’s October? My summer has barely begun… 🫠

Lizzy has made a rather large new friend.

Our cat Lizzy, a brown tabby with bright green eyes, laying down on my son’s bed, under his giant Pikachu cushion / plush toy.

Fun fact: that was my bed as a kid (and my sheets form the late 80s!), and the bed goes back in our family as far back as my great grandfather Willy. He came from the Orphan Train and apparently this is the bed he slept on as a kid.

It's a toughie, because on one hand, at ECCC, you'd stand out, and there's the chance you could turn on some readers to a different flavor of manga that they hadn't seen before, which is always good, but $$$ is tough when you're running your own thing. I wish you luck with whichever choice you make!

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

I haven't been there, but the way you describe the situation, it sounds like it'd be a net negative, so maybe best to save the resources for a more small-press focused event.

What's Aidan up to? Oh you know, just putting out some of the best lettering you've ever seen! 🏆A+

Anyway, fuck being shy about the stuff you love! I'm an otaku for art, music, manga & anime, comics, cars, games, films, Star Trek, design, architecture, karaoke, Japan, Italy, synthesizers, drum machines, cats, etc! Life is too short not to totally throw yourself into the deep end of your passions.

In my 20s, I started to think I was too cool for all that, and sort of fell in with more hipster-ish scenes that were fun, but sometimes felt judgy (not talking about my actual friends from then, who were/are great, but more the general scene.) I felt shyer about my passion for anime & manga.

Y'know, one thing that's been really nice about working in the manga world, and getting to know so many cool people because of it and being on here, is that in my middle age, I've been able to totally embrace my inner otaku & set it free.

I feel like it's an underappreciated one! (and oh man, that soundtrack rules)

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

As you can see from these lists, while there's certainly modern(ish) stuff I love, I am definitely a product of the time of my youth. But the sweet thing is, all this stuff holds up over the years. 💎 Now if I had to do a music one, I'd have a hard time narrowing it down to under 50 artists!

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

Alrighty, let's cap this off with the game version. I feel like I did this before, but can't remember if I posted it here or at the bird site. Anyway, like anime & manga, I have a hard time narrowing down top faves... (But those first few are really the holiest of all!)

My nine favorite games. The BEST! Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI (or as it was called when I first played it: Final Fantasy III), Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Sonic CD, Fallout: New Vegas, Grand Theft Auto: Vice CIty, Katamari Damacy

Nine more games I adore: Tetris, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed Origins, The Warriors (love the movie too), Earth Defense Force 2017 (the ultimate couch co-op dumb fun game), Metroid II: The Return of Samus, Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Other ones I almost put here: Sonic 2 & 3, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Assassin's Creed 2, Secret of Evermore, GTA 3 / San Andreas / 4/ 5, GBA Metroid games, Super Bomberman, Fallout 3 & 4, Pole Position (my first ever video game!), Centipede (my first favorite video game), The Simpsons Arcade Game, lordy, so much more...

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

Ok now time for the anime version! My top 9 favorite anime, and 9 more that I love (ok, let's just call this my top 18 anime, and even then I had to cut stuff out!)

My top 9 favorite anime: Roujin-Z, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Urusei Yatsura 2 Beautiful Dreamer, Paprika (all Satoshi Kon, really), The Dagger of Kamui, Battle Angel Alita, Evangelion, New Cutey Honey

Nine more of my favorite anime: Bubblegum Crisis (and Crash & AD Police), Macross Plus, Video Girl Ai, A Wind Named Amnesia, Vision of Escaflowne, Princess Mononoke, Macross (or as I knew it: Robotech! The thing that started it all for me), Angel's Egg, Ranma 1/2.

Honorable mentions: Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress, Doomed Megalopolis, Dirty Pair, DNA², etc etc ETC

The 9 manga that shaped me (plus 9 more honorable mentions that I love!) 9koma.com/en (I feel so lucky to have worked on several of these 🥰)

The nine manga that shaped me. Battle Angel Alita, Phoenix, Domu, Akira, Land of the Lustrous, Ashita no Joe, Ranma 1/2, Adolf, Video Girl Ai

I've worked on: Battle Angel Alita (all the series in some capacity, especially Mars Chronicle & Holy Night), Akira (35th anniversary boxd set), Land of the Lustrous (all), Ashita no Joe (all)

Nine more manga that I deeply love. DNA², Blood on the Tracks, Die Wergelder, Heavenly Delusion, Maison Ikkoku, Crying Freeman, The Strange Tale of Panorama Island, My Name is Shingo, Eden: It's an Endless World!

I've worked on: Blood on the Tracks (all except vol 2), Die Wergelder (all), Panorama Island (all)

There are even more manga I love a lot that I want to add to this list, but gotta cut it off here. Man, I didn't get to squeeze in any Junji Ito (almost put Gyo on here.) Also was very tempted to put Urusei Yatsura, but I have more experience with the anime of it, and the general aura surrounding the franchise (I love collecting Lum stuff), than the manga. Gotta rectify that one day and read it all!

Oh I love the classic one! I was really really looking forward to the new one, but haven't had time to watch it yet. (Very hard to watch action-packed shows in Japanese while working...) I love how all the different adaptations have had their own flavor.

Just had to update this thread with a picture of 💎 MY PRECIOUS 💎

My copy of the amazing anime Roujin-Z, on VHS. Based off a story and designs by Katauhiro Otomo. Gorgeous character designs by Hisashi Eguchi. Directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo. Do yourself a favor and watch this gem, wherever/however you can find it!

I have a huge trove of stuff on my Flickr, but people don't really check that site much anymore (and I haven't had time to update it in like ten years.) It's a much MUCH better site for photography, so I wish people would move back to it.

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

Wish I could know for sure if this site will become evil someday (or *how* evil) so I can decide how much effort to expend. I put so much effort into Facebook, Instagram, and to some extend, Twitter over the years, and feel like we all got a bait-and-switch on those sites.

Evan Hayden @electronvolcano.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

Stuff I wanna share on Bluesky, when I have more time: 1. photography from my Nagasaki days 2. anime/manga ephemera from the 80s/90s 3. my old original comics I made as a teen 4. old art & music I made over the years 5. hopefully ...new art & music?

In addition to Akira, my other "crown jewel" cels are my G.I.T.S. ones. Got one of Motoko, one of Batou, & one of the Puppet Master. Glad I got them when they were pretty cheap back in the 90s. (My Battle Angel Alita cell is my other most-prized possession!)
