PPS: Not to add on TOO much to the vain-train here, but I made a post about this on Instagram too & thought I'd add some extra photos from that here. 1. Me yesterday, wearing one of my favorite shirts, that I got when I was 26. 2. Me in 2003 & now, the same weight (can't believe that shit!)
Me, yesterday evening. I was wearing a black shirt covered in Japanese family crest iconography, black & white Adidas jogging pants, neon yellow-green Adidas running shoes, holding a big-ass bright blue Stanley 40z mug (I swear, I'm not advertising for either of these... Got the Stanley dirt-cheap at Marshalls. I'm a bargain hunter. But that said, I have bought an obscene enough amount of Adidas stuff over the years that maybe they SHOULD sponsor me, haha.) Also featured: green hair. I'm standing in front of my garage. (The inside of which is very cluttered with stuff from when I cleaned-out & sold my parents' house, but you can't see that here because the door is closed.)

Are you still reading this? Bark once for yes or meow twice for no.Me in 2003, and me now. I'm basically the same weight now that I was then. That blows my damn mind, since I had basically given up on ever being that size again. Hope it stays. My body is already trying to fight it, but I gotta stay stable...

Ok JK, you get context. Today was the “Apple Butter Festival” in Holland OH. Went last year too, but it was right after surgery, so I couldn’t eat anything. Rectified that today! Here is the aforementioned fancy chicken:

Today was the last day of the special gym program I’ve been doing at ProMedica for the past 8 months. Also, last week marked one year since my gastric bypass. Down 75lb since then and 121 since my highest weight. Gotta switch to a cheaper gym but gonna keep this going, hopefully for good! 💪
A before (October 2024) and current (today, October 3rd, 2026) comparison of me. Full-body pic. Down around 120 lbs since that first pic. About half of that thanks to my gastric bypass surgery and half due to me finally getting into exercise. Feels good!

Lizzy has made a rather large new friend.
Our cat Lizzy, a brown tabby with bright green eyes, laying down on my son’s bed, under his giant Pikachu cushion / plush toy.

Fun fact: that was my bed as a kid (and my sheets form the late 80s!), and the bed goes back in our family as far back as my great grandfather Willy. He came from the Orphan Train and apparently this is the bed he slept on as a kid.

Alrighty, let's cap this off with the game version. I feel like I did this before, but can't remember if I posted it here or at the bird site. Anyway, like anime & manga, I have a hard time narrowing down top faves... (But those first few are really the holiest of all!)
My nine favorite games. The BEST! Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI (or as it was called when I first played it: Final Fantasy III), Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Sonic CD, Fallout: New Vegas, Grand Theft Auto: Vice CIty, Katamari DamacyNine more games I adore: Tetris, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed Origins, The Warriors (love the movie too), Earth Defense Force 2017 (the ultimate couch co-op dumb fun game), Metroid II: The Return of Samus, Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Other ones I almost put here: Sonic 2 & 3, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Assassin's Creed 2, Secret of Evermore, GTA 3 / San Andreas / 4/ 5, GBA Metroid games, Super Bomberman, Fallout 3 & 4, Pole Position (my first ever video game!), Centipede (my first favorite video game), The Simpsons Arcade Game, lordy, so much more...

Ok now time for the anime version! My top 9 favorite anime, and 9 more that I love (ok, let's just call this my top 18 anime, and even then I had to cut stuff out!)
My top 9 favorite anime: Roujin-Z, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Urusei Yatsura 2 Beautiful Dreamer, Paprika (all Satoshi Kon, really), The Dagger of Kamui, Battle Angel Alita, Evangelion, New Cutey HoneyNine more of my favorite anime: Bubblegum Crisis (and Crash & AD Police), Macross Plus, Video Girl Ai, A Wind Named Amnesia, Vision of Escaflowne, Princess Mononoke, Macross (or as I knew it: Robotech! The thing that started it all for me), Angel's Egg, Ranma 1/2.

Honorable mentions: Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress, Doomed Megalopolis, Dirty Pair, DNA², etc etc ETC

The 9 manga that shaped me (plus 9 more honorable mentions that I love!) 9koma.com/en (I feel so lucky to have worked on several of these 🥰)
The nine manga that shaped me. Battle Angel Alita, Phoenix, Domu, Akira, Land of the Lustrous, Ashita no Joe, Ranma 1/2, Adolf, Video Girl Ai

I've worked on: Battle Angel Alita (all the series in some capacity, especially Mars Chronicle & Holy Night), Akira (35th anniversary boxd set), Land of the Lustrous (all), Ashita no Joe (all)Nine more manga that I deeply love. DNA², Blood on the Tracks, Die Wergelder, Heavenly Delusion, Maison Ikkoku, Crying Freeman, The Strange Tale of Panorama Island, My Name is Shingo, Eden: It's an Endless World!

I've worked on: Blood on the Tracks (all except vol 2), Die Wergelder (all), Panorama Island (all)

There are even more manga I love a lot that I want to add to this list, but gotta cut it off here. Man, I didn't get to squeeze in any Junji Ito (almost put Gyo on here.) Also was very tempted to put Urusei Yatsura, but I have more experience with the anime of it, and the general aura surrounding the franchise (I love collecting Lum stuff), than the manga. Gotta rectify that one day and read it all!

Here are the two references. The old box, on the left, the new on the right. I hadn’t thrown them out yet, because I wanted to try drawing them.
Two different boxes of Splat brand “Midnight Jade” green hair dye, the old design, and the new one. A very beautiful green-haired woman on each box. I guess I am sort of a dude-bro in that I love to draw ladies and always have. 😅

Could sleep last night so I drew these two ladies from the old box design and the new box design for the green hair dye I’ve been using this year. I’m not great at capturing real likenesses, but hey, a fun little exercise. I’ve always loved drawing hair and eyes.

I was watching some of NBC’s coverage of the 9/11 memorial, & they cut off the speech the guy on the right was giving about his family, to go to commercial. They did that to several others too. Seriously, can we tell the advertising sponsors to go buzz off for just a few hours out of one solemn day?
A couple of gentlemen reading off names of the victims of 9/11. (I didn’t catch their names.) I was taking random pics throughout what I watched of the memorial, because it feels historic. The man in the right side, in the FDNY went on to be a firefighter like his uncle who died in the attack, and NBC cut him off in the middle of his speech for an ad break. 😟

I made a couple new friends while on a walk over the weekend 😊
One of two beautiful butterflies I saw, that were visiting the same pink flowered plant. I'm no entomologist, but after some googling, I think this one is a "dainty swallowtail" (Papilio anactus.) It's black, and has white & orange spots. It's resting on a puffy pink flower. One of two beautiful butterflies I saw, that were visiting the same pink flowered plant. This one is a lovely monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus.) It's orange with stained-glass-looking black lines, and black edging on the wings that is filled with white spots. It's resting on a puffy pink flower. I'm not sure exactly what kind of flower. Seems close to a mimosa, but the images I was seeing for that, the stalks look different. Oh well, whatever it is, it's pretty!

It's Labor Day, and thus it is again time to post the champion of workers across the universe, Rom. #startrek, #ds9, #laborday
Some screenshots I stitched together from "Bar Association", an episode of the beloved show Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Quark, a Fergengi bartender / con-artist, is talking to his brother Rom. They are having a dispute about the way Quark treats his employees. Quark says "Rom, can't we talk about this?" Rom goes full-on Karl Marx and retorts "There's only one thing I have to say to you. Workers of the world unite. You have nothing to lose but your chains."

(As for me, I make this post on Labor Day 2026. I already worked earlier today, and have to work the rest of the evening. Labor day indeed!)

This post reminded me of how my old beloved friend Magnus used to love hanging out on the heater in the bathroom in my old family home. That was one of his favorite places to watch squirrels in the giant tree in our backyard. He was such a sweetheart. Perfect cat 10/10.
My cat Magnus (?-2014 - I got him in 2008) on a morning in January 2013, sitting on the radiator next to the toilet in my old bathroom, at the home my family lived in for 30 yrs, in Monroe MI. Magnus was a fluffy brown cat with green eyes. I always thought he was a Norwegian Forest Cat, and maybe he was, or maybe he was a domestic longhair of some sort, I dunno. So fluffy and soft. He was very sweet and loving. Always curled up in my lap when I was working at the computer or watching movies. Always wanted to be near me. I took him back and forth to California twice with me, so he was a well-traveled kitty. I still miss him so much. I moved to Japan a couple weeks after this photo was taken, and though my Japan years were so good to me, but I regret not being with Magnus at the end. He died just one week before I came home to visit in December 2014. This was after my other cat, a Tonkinese (maybe?) named Cleo, and my husky dog Nero, both passed away in 2013 when I was gone. It was very sad timing. Man, this really turned into a sad remembrance, huh. Anyway, all three pets were wonderful and I miss them.My cat Magnus (?-2014 - I got him in 2008) on an afternoon in April 2012, sitting on the toilet in front of the radiator in my old bathroom, at the home my family lived in for 30 yrs, in Monroe MI. Got myself a wee li’l present to celebrate finishing 7/8 of Ashita no Joe. (One more volume to go!) I’d been looking for this for months! Brick Shop (Mattel’s take on LEGO) 1990 Honda Civic EF hatch in turquoise, just like I desired in my youth. It’s got a little sibling too!

For scale, here's another pic from that day, of my wife with the pumpkin. She's 4'11'' / 150cm, so I'd estimate that big ol' polka dot baby is almost 7 ft tall, counting the stem.
A large (over 6ft / 182 cm tall) yellow pumpkin statue with black polka dots of various sizes, made by the amazing artist Yayoi Kusama. I spotted this one in Fukuoka Japan in 2014. Here's another pic of it, with my wife Miwa standing next to it, just to show how big that pumpkin was! (A little taller than me, and I'm around 6ft.)

Rest in peace Yayoi Kusama. Here's one of her giant pumpkins I spotted in Fukuoka back in 2014. I really wanted to make it to her exhibit that came to Toledo Museum of Art in 2020, but Covid kind of messed up those plans. Hopefully I'll step into one of her infinity rooms someday!

Most of my band shirts from my teens & early 20s fit again. Hehe, here’s The Faint and Fischerspooner. I can relive the naïve angst of my youth. It’s late summer of 2001. We’re all feeling young & happy. Surely nothing bad is going to happen over the next few months/years/decades, right? Right?? 🥲
Me, a middle-aged white male with faded dyed-green hair, taking a selfie in my bathroom mirror. (The kind of selfie that I’m now slightly embarrassed to take as a middle-aged dude.) I’m wearing a black t-shirt with a some sort of rotating graphic in it, and it says “The Faint” under the artwork. It’s a shirt for Omaha-based band The Faint, who I was really into in my early-mid 20s.Me, a middle-aged white male with faded dyed-green hair, taking a selfie in front of my light lavender bedroom wall. The shirt has a variety of typography (including what appears to be Herb Lubalin’s “Avant Garde” - one of my favorite typefaces ever, and fuck Alex Jones for using it on his Info Wars logo) and it says “Sounds good, looks good, feels good too” which were lyrics from their breakout hit “Emerge”.

I hadn't seen all that many Sam Neill movies (Jurassic Park, of course), but he did an awesome / terrifying job in one of my favorite movies, Event Horizon. He and Laurence Fishburne really played well off of each other. Rest in peace to a great talent.
Sam Neill as Dr. William G "Billy" Weir in the 1997 science-fiction horror film "Event Horizon". He is wearing a jumpsuit, and is crouched against the wall in a tight corridor made up entirely of green-tinged circuit boards. He looks a bit exasperated.

Found this shirt while cleaning. I made it as an edgy 20-yr-old, using glittery iron-on letters. Back then, I thought it was funny / ironic, but now not so much. I’d never thought I’d live through an era where it actually felt like the US was on such a quick, deep decline.

My son makes me nervous the way he waves his arms back and forth wildly while carrying along the 3DS XL I gave him, so I looked for a wrist strap around the house. I found an unopened Pokémon 10th anniversary one I picked up 20 yrs ago, & feel like I hit the jackpot 🙂
My son’s red Nintendo 3DS XL system sitting on my green & white Formica dining table. On the system is a black Nintendo-branded woven wrist strap with a cloisonné Pokémon 10th anniversary Pikachu charm. I have lots of little accessories like this from over the years and have been finding treasure while gradually cleaning out my garage. This strap was still in the packaging, and who knows, maybe it’s worth some money, but it’s more valuable while in use, protecting that 3DS from being accidentally flung who-knows-where by my very energetic son. Oh, and he loves Pokémon, so that fits too! Can’t believe Pokémon is already 30 years old now!

I’m a GREEN GUY now. ✅
A 46-yr-old bearded man with green hair l, wearing a “I ❤️ NY” shirt, against a grey painted brick wall.

First time I’ve been all-green since age 20. “Blond Ambition” era over and “Hulk Hair” era begins, haha. It’s been every color of the rainbow over the years but it’s been a little while since I did a color this unusual. Not sure yet if it suits me. Got very used to the blonde I had this past couple years, and I think that looked better, but I want to avoid bleaching my hair again for a while, since I’m still a few months post surgery and people lose hair a lot after gastric bypass and I don’t want to hasten that by putting anything too strong on my scalp. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

An early morning about-to-workout selfie because I’ve never posted one of those, so hey, why not? I usually exercise in the evening. Didn’t get a substantial enough breakfast today so I’m feeling a little woozy now post-workout. Time to devour something!
Me, standing outside in the gym parking lot, looking stern. Dark blue sky in the background with the sun just starting to come up. Neon yellow-green Adidas running shoes I got at a screaming bargain at the Adidas outlet store. When I wear these particular shoes with my purple Adidas track jacket, o look like the EVA-01, haha. Anyway, also in the photo, black & white Adidas jogger pants I also got on a screaming bargain at TJ Maxx. Black & blue track jacket (Hurley?) that I bought 20 years ago. Orange tote bag with one of my illustrations on it (hard to see from this angle.) Bleached hair that has thoroughly grown out and is showing brown & grey roots. Stern face. I’m not feeling especially stern or serious, but my face these days has some heavier laugh lines than the days when my face was more filled-out. That’s taken some getting used to, looking frowny in my neutral photos, but it’s ok. I feel good at least! Exercise has been helping me get through this pretty stressful life/world era. I like how ALT text allows me to be super wordy in the way that I usually am on social media. It’s probably not a good habit, but hey. Hello to anyone who is actually reading this!

I found (half of) a mixtape that I made when I was a kid! I'll have to give it a listen to see if I actually finished the B side or not. Ostensibly, it's a hip hop mix, but I wouldn't consider Technotronic hip hop (hey, I was only 8, and didn't know much yet about Belgian techno-pop!)
A mistape I made as an 8-yr-old boy, called "RAP MUSIC". Featuring DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Biz Markie, Public Enemy, Young M.C. and the not-exactly-hip-hop Technotronic. I seem to have only finished the first side, seeing as there are only six songs listed, and only on side A. The packaging is neon green paper, with photocopied logos and artwork from some of my hip hop cassettes taped on. The tape has yellowed significantly with age. I seem to have only finished the first side, seeing as there are only six songs listed, and only on side A. The packaging is neon green paper, with photocopied logos and artwork from some of my hip hop cassettes taped on. The tape has yellowed significantly with age. beware the savage jaw of 1984
An image made with the Burger King text generator, featuring a quote from George Orwell's "1984":
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—for ever."

Always fun when I get to bust out the 書道 / calligraphy brush set & sumi ink for a manga project. ✍️
A few sheets of paper where I wrote the name “Joe Yabuki” (the main character of Ashita no Joe) in stylized script, using a Japanese sumo brush and ink. Also pictured are my various shodō / calligraphy accessories I bought in Japan. A variety of brushes. Two types of ink (bottled India ink and a sumi stick.) A couple of suzuri (ink wells), one plastic and one stone/ceramic (inside the box.) I use these tools once in a while if I want to get a brush script effect on some manga lettering. This will be for a sign in Ashita No Joe 6. I’ve also used this technique a lot in Tank Chair, for Yuuri’s “spectral ninjutsu” techniques.

A few more (I took a ton, but I don't want to overdo it here.) Sadly we didn't do the full tour since it was pricey, but there was still cool stuff to see. Hope to return some day. Rest in peace Prince (and Bowie!) The world doesn't seem quite right since those two left it.
a "please keep off the grass" sign at Paisley Park, with the Paisley Park logo.A pedestrian tunnel under a road that is full of dedications and testimonials from Prince fans (you might even call it a "Graffiti Bridge"!) I wrote a little something in there too. My son is in the foreground, checking stuff out."Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway" sign, on the side of the road.Me, smiling, standing in front of some of the Prince-themed mural art. I'm wearing a Purple Rain shirt.

Ten years now since Prince died. Losing him and Bowie in the same year was pretty tough on me, since they are two of my all-time favorite musicians. In September 2024 we visited family in Minnesota. On the way back, we stopped by Paisley Park. Here are a few pics, in this & the next post...
L to R: me, Felix, Miwa, in September 2024, outside of Paisley Park. (Prince's home and recording studio, now a museum.) We are standing in front of a variety of plants, and a big purple Prince "Love Symbol". The exterior of Prince's home & recording studio, Paisley Park. A, angular white building with grid patterns on it. Purple details here and there.Just one small section of a very long fence of Prince tributes left by fans. Handwritten letters. Original art. Music instruments. Photos. Hearts. Messages of gratitude and inspiration. People loved him. I did too. Some purple flowers, and some bees! Purple is the color most associated with Prince, but I've read that his actual favorite color was yellow. These flowers have both of those important colors.

CNN dot com trying to get our minds and palates ready for the post-societal-collapse cannibal lifestyle. 😨
A screenshot of the CNN homepage from April 14th, 2026. A black & white x-ray (MRI?) photo of the cross-section of some human thighs. The headline reads "Ultraprocessed foods are turning human thighs into well-marbled steaks". Above the pic is a call-to-action blurb that says "CHECK THESE OUT".

🎵 Keep on rollin’ Keep on rollin’ Keep on rollin’ Roll with the roooollll caaake 🎶 Not fancy, but yummy. Used to eat this stuff all the time back in Japan and it’s been too long. I like uzumaki cake.
My wife cutting some chocolate roll cake while our son watches intently. (Clearance bakery section at Meijer since we are penny pinchers!) She is wearing a bright red cardigan and the walls are a warm reddish tone. The table has a white & aqua geometric diamond pattern.

True journalism still exists, just not in the old places. I just watched a video mostly about the effects of the US's blockade on one specific young boy in Cuba and I felt like my heart was being torn out. 😢 It's not an easy watch, but I think it's really important to watch. I'll link it in a sec...
A screenshot of the news show Breaking Points. Reporter Ryan Grim and others went to Cuba to report on the effects of the blockade on Cuba. The video is titled and thumbnailed about the Russian oil tanker getting through the blockade, but the main story is about a young boy with cystic fibrosis who desperately needs medicine that his family can't access due to the Cuba's status and the blockade the US has put upon it. Here is that young boy being cared for in the hospital, with the subtitle of his mom saying "we're all human beings".

I'm tired of my country being more and more evil all the time. There are so many of us Americans who don't want this, and we don't want our tax dollars to fund evil like this, or war in Iran, or genocide in Gaza. Trump and his entire movement has to go, and they need to be brought up on war crimes and crimes against humanity. INTERNATIONAL LAW HAS TO MEAN SOMETHING.

I've always loved lots of manga, but back in my OG otaku days ('90s) I also watched a ton of anime. Since the mid-'00s, I don't watch much anime, but I have to say I'm more excited about the new Ghost in the Shell than I have been for an anime in literally decades. Can't wait!
Poster promo art for the new Ghost in the Shell anime by Science Saru, featuring the major sitting on top of a tachikoma. (A cyborg lady with blue hair, wearing a grey tactical suit, and a dark visor propped up above her eyes. The tachikoma is a red crab-like mech, with some cute eyes/lenses (pink, yellow, red, and green.) This new Ghost in the Shell anime looks like it's going to capture the feeling of the original manga, which I loved as a teenager. Pure nostalgia, pump it into my veins!

"Someone stile my PS4 Dreams. Can't have shit in Detroit."

A spin on the can't-have-shit-in-Detroit meme (which was originally about Cincinnati, actually, but I grew up sort of near Detroit, so I'll keep that version.)

My car & I match today 🚗
A photo of yours-truly, leaning against my car, smiling. I’m wearing my bright red Puma track jacket, which matches my bright red 2007 Mazda 3 hatchback. Nineteen years since I bought it and it still makes me smile when I drive it. I love a car with good handling, and that’s long been one of Mazda’s strengths.
