I grew up in Toutle, working as a farm hand, public lands steward, writer, and photographer. I am running for the legislature not to become a career politician, but to fight for rural SW WA and everything I love about this place. 20th LD 2026 candidate

I plan another nature walk in October if I can fit it into my schedule. If I do, I'll be sure to post about it well in advance on this Bluesky account.

Thanks to everyone who showed up for the nature walk today! It was a beautiful afternoon at Carlisle Lake, and we had some great conversations about rural parks and ways in which we might improve rural economies in Washington State.

The Ridgefield Waterfront is a beautiful place, and the vast majority of the people who live in this community want the waterfront to remain as it is.

Check out my booth from Squirrelfest this weekend! We finally got all my informational posters finalized and printed, and I had many, many great conversations with folks at the festival. There's a lot of excitement for outdoor adventure parks and industrial hemp production in Cowlitz County!

We've got to stop mega-warehouses from being built on the Chehalis River floodplain! Not only will this project flood peoples homes with displaced water, it will pave over the aquifer, destroy habitat, pollute the river, and clog the roads of Centralia with 1000 trucks per day.

As of the last update, I'm 9 points over where the last Democrat was who ran for the 20th LD in position 1. While I've got to win a lot more votes to pass my opponent, what we see now is real progress towards flipping this district blue.

"Voting is too important to leave it to guesswork. It is a right and also a responsibility. If you don’t vote, you are risking the destruction of our country and our freedom. And NEVER let anyone take your vote away from you. It is the most valuable thing you have and is the key to your future."

"In addition, most politicians have websites that go more in-depth about their platforms, their ideals and their backgrounds. You can even write or call a politician about an issue you are worried about."

"Making an informed decision is therefore difficult. But for incumbents, you can check to see how they voted on bills that affect you. For instance, they may have voted for a bill, such as the SAVE Act, that makes it harder for you to vote. You don’t want that."

"Voting down party lines can be a fatal error as well, since some politicians turn out to be traitors to their party. Even endorsements can be misleading, since various groups will only endorse someone they think will win, regardless of their platform."

"Deciding who to vote for can be frustrating and confusing. Often, the statements in the voters' guide are full of meaningless party rhetoric."

We need that high turnout to win WA3, and we need it too boost downballot Democrat campaigns. I fear that if Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez makes it through the primary, she has essentially zero chance of winning due to her absolutely awful performance in Congress, & that will hurt downballot candidates.

Many of you will help decide competitive primaries. In SW WA, It is imperative that we vote for Brent Hennrich. This is important both because he is the best candidate WA3 had had in my lifetime, and because I believe having him running in the general election will help boost voter turnout.

Washington's Growth Management Act was a great piece of legislation, but it is in urgent need of an update. Suburban sprawl is running rampant in rural areas, paving over our fields and forests. We must enact changes to strengthen the GMA and put a stop to further sprawl.

The park would also grant access to adjacent National Forest lands, access to which is currently complicated by their isolation. Of note is the fact that Kiona Peak and the surrounding area was once home to an extensive trail network, & this new park and trail system would rebuild of that heritage.

It would also ensure that residents of Randle have easy access to a large area of accessible outdoor recreation from their doorsteps. A mountainbike trail network could also be built, separate from that depicted here for pedestrians/equestrians, so as to reduce trail-user conflict.

An extensive trail system for hikers and horseback riders would feature half a dozen trailheads in Randle and nearby along the highway, helping the community to become a destination rather than a place where tourists and recreation seekers merely drive on through.

Establishing native meadows in key locations, along with long term forest restoration via selective thinning would further enhance the attraction of this area.

The landscape here is home to former lookout sites, impressive rock formations, and numerous vantage points and miniature mountains, each of which would make an attractice hiking destination.

Here's a rough concept sketch of one of the parks I want to create for rural communities. Kiona Peak Park would preserve this iconic peak overlooking Randle in Eastern Lewis County.

I also had the opportunity this morning to chat with Lewis County Sherriff candidate Danny Riordan, and was really impressed by him and his campaign. He really understands the problems faced by remote rural areas, and his platform would greatly improve law enforcement in such regions.

Essentially, the proposed plan for Spirit Lake is just an extremely expensive bandaid, and like a bandaid upon an infected wound, the project would do far more harm than good.
021
Andy Zahn for WA LD20 @electandy.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
The theoretical threat of a catastrophic flood from a breach of the debris flow is very small (I live downstream of Spirit Lake myself). Also consider major flood flood from the eruption of Rainier or Adams is a certainty, & work done on the Toutle will not protect communities from those volcanoes.

Andy Zahn for WA LD20 @electandy.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
If the federal government does indeed have hundreds of millions of dollars to dump into safety measures here, use that money to relocated homes and businesses out of the flood plain of the Cowlitz River, better defend Castle Rock/Longview/Kelso, and dredge the Cowlitz River.

Andy Zahn for WA LD20 @electandy.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
USFS and USACE only chose this out of all the possible options because they want to inflate their budgets. The blatant propaganda they're using to push and greenwash this project proves that they do not have our best interests at heart here.

Andy Zahn for WA LD20 @electandy.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
This is yet another boondoggle that will wreak havoc upon Spirit Lake and the Toutle River. The actual answer to the "problem" at Spirit Lake is simple: let the lake fill up and form a natural outlet!
100
Andy Zahn for WA LD20 @electandy.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
The plan to drill a new tunnel, build an industrial haul road, and lower the level of Spirit Lake would be absolutely catastrophic for the lake, the recovering blast zone, and for local communities. It would also waste hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars.

This list is subject to change of course, but I've invested a lot of time and research into these locations. For most of them, I've already drawn up rough-draft maps. Keep in mind that my parks plan would extend across all of rural Western Washington.
