I recently had the amazing opportunity to attend @sebiology.bsky.social Annual Conference in Florence. This was my first time at an international conference, made even better by attending with a fantastic group of researchers from @plymbiomarsci.bsky.social!

Yesterday I had a fantastic time talking all things hermit crabs and animal personality for @soapboxscience.bsky.social. This initiative aims to give women and non-binary scientists a platform to tell the general public all about their research. Thanks to everyone who came along and asked questions!

On Monday I had a great evening at the National Marine Aquarium listening to @bd-stew.bsky.social and @molkjam.bsky.social talking about the recent bloom in octopus in the Southwest for the spring #PlyMSEF lecture. I think all lectures should be held in front of aquarium tanks in future!

I was annoyed that I couldn't find a database of David Attenborough documentaries where I could search for a specific episode by topic. So I made it. attenborough-100.vercel.app

I can’t believe it’s already been a week since the #PlyMSEF Student Conference. I was part of the organising committee, which included the chance to chair the speed talk session. I also got another opportunity to present my poster on the effects of microplastics on hermit crab risk coping behaviour.

As someone who found the process of attending my first conference a little bit mystifying, I thought I’d create a guide to walk you through the whole thing and share some of the tips and tricks I’ve picked up. Who knew finding a decent poster tube could be so difficult? #blog #phdstudent #academia

The Artemis II crew is now beginning their journey home. Human's fascination with the moon has long woven its way into many aspects of our society, from religions, to art, and even pushing ourselves 252,756 miles away from our own planet to view the dark side of the moon.

I visited #LondonZoo for the first time yesterday. Unsurprisingly The Secret Life of Amphibians and Reptiles was a real highlight (and yes that was mostly because I got to see a Chinese giant salamander for the first time, and yes, I have fallen in love). @zslofficial.bsky.social

For #WhatsItWednesday we have ‘sea pork’ - the common name for a tunicate. Tunicates are marine invertebrates, and many live as a colony of zooids. The thing I found is the goopy protective ‘tunic’ they live in. I visited Rhyl just after bad weather, which probably ripped them off the sea floor.

🦑 Squid Anatomy🦑 I am so genuine- if you are a marine biologist who has written or wants to write a comic, please consider this post my application. 🐡🌊💥
Squid

Parts of a squid are labeled: Mantle (covers organs), fin, gladius/pen (internal, chitin structure), arm, tentacles, eye, siphon (for moving with jet propulsion), beak, radula

Squid have 8 arms and 2 tentacles.

Arms are tapered and have suckers all along them.

Tentacles are more elastic and only have suckers on their ends.

Some species' suckers have rings of serrated teeth or hooks.

Cephalopods are measured by their mantle length, because their limbs are muscular hydrostats.

This means they expand and contract as needed and do not have a static length.Inside a Squid

Drawing of a squid with internal organs labeled: Beak, complex brain, esophagus, pen/gladius, stomach, gonad, brachial heart, gill, systemic heart, ink sac

Squid have 3 brains- one behind each eye and a central, doughnut-shaped brain surrounding the esophagus.

If they take too big a bite, they risk damaging their brains.

Cephalopod means "head-foot," a reference to the structure of these molluscs.

Most cephalopods is the suckers in their arms to taste their environment to help determine what is or isn't prey.
