This is going to be such a great day for any theatre maker, researcher or postgraduate student wanting to chat about how and why we can persevere in our practice with all this (gestures at the world in general) going on.

I'm going spend the next 16 months writing up my PhD thesis on Mess & Scenographic Processes and I'd like to keep myself motivated and inspired by seeing as much messy theatre as possible. Please send me your tips! Spillages? Breakages? Loads of stuff? Trip hazards? Rubbish? Glitches? I love it all.

A student did a speedy sketch of me today whilst I was teaching and I LOVE IT.
A sketch in blue pen on white paper of a figure, wearing jeans and short-sleeved shirt, looking animated.

The reports about changes to Arts Council England‘s eligibility for Project Grants is going to rock the industry. Should be made public in the next 2 weeks but crikey, it looks bleak for artists and independent organisations not in receipt of ACE regular funding.

Home with my 5yr old today, playing Lego. Vincent told me to stop singing along to Meatloaf, so I was lip-syncing along instead. He said "I can still hear you!" I said "no you can't, I'm not making any noise!" Vincent replied "I can hear you because you are singing so loud in your brain!"

In what must be a record, even for me, I am sat waiting for a train realising that I am wearing three items of corduroy clothing.
A close up of Eleanor's clothing showing a green corduroy jacket over a pink corduroy shirt over a black corduroy skirt.
The out of focus background shows the wooden parquet floor and grey metal bench of a train station waiting room.

Had to wake Vincent (my 5 year old) this morning to get ready for school. He said "is it morning?" and I replied "yes". He said "why did that happen so fast??" as he started crying. Universal feeling.

-3° Cold but insanely beautiful bike ride to school this morning. Feeling very lucky as I settle down to some cosy work time with a hot chocolate.
Two bikes, one black childs' bike and one blue adults' bike, lean against a wooden bridge. Frosty meadows and trees made golden by the morning light. A bird flies in the sky. Everything is white with frost and very pretty.Close up of a frosty, spidery, dried plant stalk. I'm afraid I don't know what plant...perhaps 'lord and ladies'?
Blurred frosty trees and sky behind.View across a brook to a frosty white meadow. The orange rising sun shines through winter tree branches.

Both my desks are filled with model-making stuff as I prep for a white card presentation on Monday. So, here is my current standing laptop station: (Keeping it far away from the super glue after yesterday's spillage)
Photo shows a vintage white cupboard with pale blue top in front of a wall covered in colourful pictures, prints and photos of chandeliers. It is a cluttered, busy space.
On the cupboard sits a picnic hamper with a laptop on top.

Lost loads of work time today as my little lad's school was closed due to the floods. Have embraced the day for what it was (less productive) And sometimes a speedy sketch can solve everything.
A chunky graphite stick (like a wax crayon but grey graphite) sits on a white piece of paper. Sketched on the paper are hanging drapes, the sense of a wooden panelled floor and a balcony behind.

I'm seeing loads of lists for "Must See Theatre 2025". 1. All of these lists seem to only list London theatre. 2. They all look very tidy. Any MESSY theatre happening in 2025??

I don't do resolutions but I do enjoy the feeling of hope that comes with the new year. I feel an inspiration in January that almost makes up for how I miss the Christmas tree lights on the dark mornings. Diving into projects & PhD, emailing my MP about all the crap, embracing cosy evenings & sleep.
Eleanor smiles into the camera. She is a white cis woman with short blonde hair. She wears sunglasses and a matching yellow knitted hat and snood. She is stood in a field and the bright winter sun is behind her causing light flare in the photograph.

When your child's school knows you are a theatre designer and asks you to decorate a Santa's grotto for the school Christmas party and you aren't sure what they are expecting from you but you've turned your Conservatory into a workshop and you wonder if you may have gotten carried away...
A bright conservatory is a mess of cardboard boxes and red, pink and green coloured wrapping paper. At the far end, in front of the window, stands a toppling stack of presents and next to it a half-finished one with the pole support structure visible, poking out the top.The two finished magic stack of colourful presents stand side by side. They look like they defy gravity. They reach the ceiling.

Ok folks. This list useful because you can: 1. Be added to it (by me - pop me a message) so people can find you. 2. See who is on the list and individually follow those accounts you'd like to. 3. And this is the BIG ONE. You can 'pin to home' to get a UK theatre people feed on your home page.

Handed in a big chunk of PhD work and to celebrate I am spending the evening enjoying another kind of study: planning some new heists for my 'Blades In The Dark' crew. First go using the new 'Deep Cuts' expansion. I've been really looking forward to this! @johnharper.bsky.social
A wooden table top strewn with notebooks and paper. A copy of a book sits next to an open laptop and a mug of tea. The book cover is dark with a shadowy figure - the title: BLADES IN THE DARK. On the laptop screen is another cover of a PDF titled DEEP CUTS.
Behind all this is a bookcase and a Christmas tree. It is all very cosy.

Doing PhD research into mess, & the notions of mess that are instilled in us from our earliest years, has impacted how I talk to my 4-year-old about the mess he makes in play. Exclaiming "Wow! It looks like you have been having so much fun!" instead of "gah! Your room is a mess!"

I've got a PhD deadline next week and many words to write but I am sat sewing a home-made, felt, donkey tail onto a grey pair of joggers because my 4-year-old's Nativity costume is needed at school and they know what I do for a job and there are EXPECTATIONS THAT MUST BE MET.

It's 6am on a Sunday, you say? Well, my Annual Progression submission is just around the corner, I am a morning person, and I've a 4-year-old. (Also I've bragged about it here now, so it is worth it)
The focus of the photo is a large orange + white checked mug of tea, sat on a wooden table top.
Around it on the table are a pink computer mouse, the visible edge of a laptop and graphics tablet and a stack of books on digital theatre, ritual, creativity and entanglement.
In the background is an out of focus colourful bookshelf.

Using my first post to shamelessly show off my aesthetically pleasing studio. I've been working from this space for 8 years. I'll share bits from here as I juggle design jobs and a PhD project exploring mess and theatre-making processes.
Photo of a very pretty, cosy and cluttered desk in an art studio. The wall to the left is covered in pictures and a set of shelves to the right is packed with art supplies and pots of pencils and paintbrushes.
On the desk is a laptop and open notebooks.
