Koi originally published in Scud scudlit.blogspot.com/2026/06/two-... #poetry
Koi

When I heard the ornamental gardens
had been flooded by the river,
I thought of cherry blossom spinning
on the churning surface
and maples knocked from their pots.

Then I remembered the koi
in the deep ponds
and how they would have surged forward,
flashes of orange and white
in the water pouring into town.

As I waded through to reach my flat,
everything in the muddy water
became a koi – a plastic bag
caught on a branch, inflating, deflating,
a traffic cone, a fluorescent jacket.

When I climbed onto the town hall steps,
the water calmed and the koi
were all around, their whites and oranges
turning on the surface, reflected
in the windows of the flooded shops.

Starlings originally published on The Rialto website www.therialto.co.uk/pages/2014/0... #poetry
Starlings

At first the forest filled us with fear –
long rows of pine trees, lifeless
but as the years passed we chopped
and sawed them into cottages
and burned the offcuts to keep us
warm through dripping winters.

Strawberries and raspberries leapt up
in the clearings, made our summers
almost easy. The kids showed no interest
in the place we’d left so on the tenth
year we trekked for two days back to
the overgrown high street. What struck

us most were the birds. Goldfinches swirled
up clouds of thistle fluff and in the birch trees
hundreds of starlings repeated the beeps
of unlocking cars, the Nokia ringtone, sirens
and an ice cream van’s endless repetition
of The Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

Taxman
by George Mackay Brown

Seven scythes leaned at the wall.
Beard upon golden beard
The last barley load
Swayed through the yard.
The girls uncorked the ale.
Fiddle and feet moved together.
Then between stubble and heather
A horseman rode.

The Book Bag: Anthology II – Concealed Revelations
Welcome. On the back of the success of Unwhispered Legacy, I thought it would be worthwhile to create a second PDF anthology, again raising much needed funds for Médecins Sans Frontières. This time, I am happy to announce that my guest editor is Leia Butler of Full House Literary. There are no rules on theme and form for this edition however it would be worthwhile for you to read…

The Wishing Tree
by Kathleen Jamie

I stand neither in the wilderness
nor fairyland

but in the fold
of a green hill

the tilt from one parish
into another.

To look at me
through a smirr of rain

is to taste the iron
in your own blood

because I hoard
the common currency

of longing: each wish
each secret assignation.

My limbs lift, scabbed
with greenish coins

I draw into my slow wood
fleur-de-lys, the enthroned Brittania.

Behind me, the land
reaches towards the Atlantic.

And though I’m poisoned
choking on the small change

of human hope,
daily beaten into me

look: I am still alive –
in fact, in bud.
