The start of a new epic fantasy set in my world of Thellian. You don't need to have read my other book. Huzzah! Perfect for fans of Robin Hobb, Echoes of Chaos has: - prophecies - gem-based elemental magic - a dog-sized-cat companion - empathic bonds - a romance subplot - LGBTQ+ characters 💙📚🪐
A graphic with a white marble background, text, and the cover of Echoes of Chaos by Gabrielle Steele on a tablet and a paperback over upside down bare branches with a pale green area in the top right corner. Header text, below the book image: "Guided by light. Hunted by shadow." Body text: "Desperate to destroy the twisted beast that was once the woman she loved, an outcast makes a costly deal with an imprisoned immortal, but when she gets caught up in an ancient conflict, she must decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to end her beloved’s suffering." Below this text is a web address: thellian.com/echoes-of-chaos . Cover description: The background is dark blue with a cracked texture. The title is silver with a metallic almost 3D effect. Behind the title is a circular emblem of abstract dragons circling each other, one dark the other light. Beneath the title is a flame-coloured eagle in a watercolour style. Layered over the bottom of that is a marble-effect silhouette of a woman riding a horse with a cat beside it, surrounded by vine-like roots. The horse is rearing and the cat is up on its back legs reaching a forepaw towards the nearest root.

I don’t manage to read much these days but I’ve just started The Girl Who Cheated the Wind by M.E. Moirin. 25 pages in and I’m loving it! I really wish I wasn’t such a slow reader.

Today, I thought I'd share an epigraph for a change. I'm really excited that Echoes of Chaos is out in the world tomorrow! Also terrified, because that means it's now set in stone 😱 #BookSky #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
A graphic with text and the cover of Echoes of Chaos by Gabrielle Steele. Header text: "Out tomorrow! 24/9/26". Body text:

I will never forget the day I met her.

She sat in a tree, far higher than I dared climb back then, weak as I was. Her boldness called to me, and meeting her was like the parting of clouds. I could finally see the world clearly.

Eventually, we realised we could sense each other’s souls, and together we navigated the forming of a soulbond. It was our greatest secret, for we feared to be torn apart. Our friendship blossomed into something else. Something beautiful. Until the trials.

I will never forgive the elders for taking her from me.

Ingram proofs arrived! I still am waiting on the final ones with fixed interior margins. I think paperbacks should be up on the ‘zon by next week. Ingram are kind of slow to ship but as soon as the second proof comes I’ll release it everywhere else too! Assuming nothing else needs fixing 😅 #BookSky

A strange flame appearing in a library? What fun! thellian.com/echoes-of-chaos #BookSky #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
A graphic with text and the book cover for Echoes of Chaos by Gabrielle Steele. Header text says, "2 days to go!". Text below reads:

Eryn fought the urge to scream. Imagine a librarian finding her with a naked flame beside her. She would be banned in an instant, regardless of whether she’d caused it or if the fire were real. A few highborn had fire ethelids, yet Eryn had never seen a flame like this. It radiated no heat, and its colour was unnatural, darker than ruby yet too vibrant to liken to blood.

“What are you?” Eryn breathed, reaching for the flame. It darted away and came to rest on her pile of books. Instinct made Eryn swat at it. The flame moved back a few feet, stopping just in view along an aisle between bookshelves. Whatever it was, it was more interesting than the book she’d been reading. Curiosity outweighed the little alarm Eryn felt at the flame’s existence, and she decided to follow it. If the flame turned out to be a stress-induced hallucination, at least she would have stretched her legs.

“I hope you won’t burn anything,” she whispered.

This right here is why Eryn goes on her journey. Echoes of Chaos comes out on THURSDAY!!! Desperate to destroy the twisted beast that was once the woman she loved, an outcast makes a costly deal with an imprisoned immortal. - Bi FMC - Cat companion - Empathic bonds - An ancient conflict 💙📚🪐
A graphic with text and the book cover of Echoes of Chaos by Gabrielle Steele. The header text says "Out in 4 days!" and the text below is:

Eryn’s beloved had enjoyed walking the mountain vales before dawn, where she would sit and wait until the deer she so loved crossed the meadows. Once dawn’s golden light struck the herd, she would count each deer and weep if any had fallen to wolves, despite understanding the natural order of the Lady’s creations. The Nameless she’d become was a cruel punishment that twisted her love of deer.

Front half deer, back half wolf, the Nameless beast warred with its own nature. Recent wounds covered its horse-sized body, where it had clawed and bitten itself. The beast tossed its crystal antlers in warning, and those painfully beautiful hazel eyes flitted between the urge to flee and the desire to hunt. That indecision was the only reason Eryn was able to look upon her beloved’s Nameless beast. It didn’t know whether to run from her or kill her.

Eryn scowled at him before looking up at the hayloft. “Nettle, we’re leaving.”
Something large leapt down and ran towards them. Arlan drew his sword and pointed it at an impossibly large cat.
“You’re aiming your weapon in the wrong direction,” Eryn said. She laid a hand on the creature’s back. “I need you to delay the person following us,” she said to the cat. “Be wary. Her magic is strong.”
The cat ran past Arlan as if the threat of his sword didn’t exist.
“What was that?” he said.
“Sheathe that damn sword and mount. We need to flee.”
“You’re a kitari. Use your magic.”
There was a flash of rage in her eyes, followed by sadness. “I can’t. Stay if you wish, but what do you think will happen when she discovers you dined with me last night? She killed the mercenary we hired.”

The text below:

“And do you have an answer for me yet?” Matthias flipped the dagger, catching it deftly.

“What answer?” Arlan remembered perfectly well what Matthias had asked him last year. He still didn’t have a good answer.

“Why do you want to see the archmage when you know it’s pointless?”

“It’s not pointless. Not if I can get her to admit what happened.”

“What difference would it make? The manor fire, those deaths, it was the result of one mage’s twisted ambition. Even if he were alive to pay for his crimes, the dead would still be dead. Why put yourself through going there?” He flipped the dagger again. This time when he caught it, he stepped forwards and held the point to Arlan’s ribs, right over the scar that covered his side.

Person 1: “You stand accused of plotting to murder a sacred beast. Do you have anything to say?”

Person 2: “I won’t deny what I plan to do. I made a promise to her, and I will keep it. The Lady values truth, does she not?”

Person 1: “The Lady values life, and she would want you punished severely for planning to take one.”

Person 2: “I’m not afraid of the consequences. I will do what I must, no matter how long I have to wait.”

ERYN KEPT HER hands flat on the library desk to stop herself reaching for the book she'd been reading, a show of restraint for which it ought to have been grateful. Thanks to her father, she had an immutable respect for books, preventing her from throwing this one across the library. The author claimed to know a great deal about the Nameless, yet they knew less than Eryn had before beginning this endless research.
She closed the book with care and sighed, the sound breaking the blissful silence of the library. If she didn't find an outlet for this frustration soon, it would make itself known to those around her. Even the library's familiar scents of old paper and leather bindings failed to ease her mood. Perhaps she would study a book written in the Old Tongue to

From chapter 4 of Echoes of Chaos. Eryn stubbornly ignoring the point makes me chuckle. #Books #Writing
“What if there isn’t a way to free her?”
Darrys set a hand on her shoulder for once. “Then all is as the Lady intended.”
Eryn pushed his hand away. “Do you really believe this is what she intends? Everything she made is beautiful. How could she make something so against her own design?”
“Why must a she-wolf bring death to grow life in her belly? Why does fire replenish the soil? Just because we can’t explain something, doesn’t mean there isn’t a reason.”
A frown creased Eryn’s brow. “I can explain both of those.”
“You’re ignoring my point.”

From chapter 1 of Echoes of Chaos, where Nettle, the cat companion, gets introduced. 🥰 Out 24th September. Please pre-order the ebook! #WIPSnips

After returning her books, Eryn stepped out of the Library of Dawn and smiled at the large cat waiting beside the entrance. She knelt beside Nettle, her head level with his, and scratched the golden brown fur on his shoulder between dark stripes.
“You didn’t need to wait,” Eryn said to Nettle. He butted his forehead against hers, and she received a sense of fondness from him across their soulbond. “I wish you were allowed in the libraries. I could use your company.”
“Is mine lacking?” Darrys said, leaning down to stroke Nettle.
“I think if our friendship developed a soulbond, you would fast grow tired of it.”
All too often, Eryn’s anger slipped across to Nettle, and she was grateful the bond required touch to work. When Nettle was barely an adult, he’d run away after she’d accidentally let him feel the full force of her anger at Elder Treeborn, and if it hadn’t been for her beloved, Nettle may never have come back down from the mountains. When he’d eventually returned, he’d proudly shown Eryn a loose leather collar about his neck. A gift from Eryn’s beloved. Eryn brushed her fingers across the moss agate charm hanging from the collar. He could remove the collar himself should he wish, but Eryn had rarely seen him without it.

I didn’t realise how old Lilith’s Brood is until I looked it up, because the prose doesn’t feel old, and the themes are still relevant. It’s like Octavia Butler could have published this from the grave yesterday. We haven’t learnt.
Highlighted text from a screenshot:

“You are hierarchical. That’s the older and more entrenched characteristic. We saw it in your closest animal relatives and in your most distant ones. It’s a terrestrial characteristic. When human intelligence served it instead of guiding it, when human intelligence did not even acknowledge it as a problem, but took pride in it or did not notice it at all . . .” The rattling sounded again. “That was like ignoring cancer. I think your people did not realize what a dangerous thing they were doing.”

When they reached the road, Arlan begged some coin from Eryn, which he dropped between some sacks as they passed the broken cart. They hadn’t gone much further when the air became heavy. By the time they reached Elbamir’s outskirts, Eryn looked like she might vomit.
*“What is this foulness in the air?” she asked.
“Fumes from the forges. Elbamir has many, most producing weapons for the army.”
“Have humans considered not going to war?”*
Arlan didn’t answer, worried he might let out the anger growing from her continued insults. But the more he thought about it, the more he saw the truth in her words. The kitari weren’t a warring people. With their superior magic, they could have conquered Askar with ease. Instead, they kept to themselves in their mountain city.

Can I self-rec? My book's on kobo plus if you have that and it's a dark epic fantasy standalone with a sapphic romance subplot. A loner thief discovers she's one of the few people who can use newly-returned magic, but when her first use causes a lethal accident, she's dragged before the king.

If you don't mind self-recs... My book has some similar parts, like the female thief lead dresses as a man and learnt to fight with a blade, discovers magic, ends up drawn into court politics. It's adult rather than YA and gets dark in places but also has lighter moments. Very character focused.

Not at all commentary on members of parliament in the UK and their subsidised bar... From Echoes of Chaos, out September.
“Enough,” King Harold said, raising a hand. “Get your arguments in order and reconvene tomorrow.” He rose from his throne-like chair and lumbered towards the grander of the room’s two doorways, which led to the great hall. As servants opened it, the scent of roast meats drifted through, and Arlan caught a glimpse of a table filled with jugs of wine. Most lords followed the king towards the feast.

Preferring to avoid spending time with drunk men who ought to have known better, Arlan usually skipped the king’s feasts, especially when they started early in the evening. That day, however, he was tempted to join. It was early enough the Mage Guild would still be open to visitors, leaving him no excuse to put off his other reason for being in Varran. He made for the smaller door, patting Greenlake on the shoulder as he passed. Being around the king and his dukes while they were drunk was a more fearsome prospect than facing the Guild. Or so Arlan made himself believe.

Without warning, Arlan stood and removed his bloodstained, sleeveless shirt. Eryn stared at his bare chest and gasped, unable to stop herself lightly brushing her fingers over a scar that covered his side. It looked to have been caused by fire. He shivered, and she pulled her hand back.
“So this is why you kept holding your side when the fire was mentioned,” she said. “You must have had a terrible burn.”
“It took a long time to heal. I suppose that’s why it looks so awful.”
“It doesn’t look awful. It looks like you survived something awful.”

The cover for Echoes of Chaos is live on the 'zon pre-orders! 🥳 www.amazon.co.uk/Echoes-Chaos... 💙📚🪐 #BookSky #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
The book cover for Elements of the Fallen Book One: Echoes of Chaos by Gabrielle Steele. The background is dark blue with a cracked texture. The horse is rearing and the cat is up on its back legs reaching a forepaw towards the nearest root.Echoes of Chaos by Gabrielle Steele.

Guided by light. Hunted by shadow.

Eryn wants only one thing – to kill the beast that was once the woman she loved. Yet no matter how desperate Eryn is to end her beloved’s suffering, the beast has proved invulnerable. Eryn’s only hope comes from an imprisoned immortal and the costly deal they offer.

Arlan craves justice for the deaths of his family at the hands of a mage. Despite being a lord, Arlan has no power to confront the Mage Guild over covering up what happened, for only a mage can fight a mage. But when Eryn crashes into Arlan’s life, the Guild’s lies begin to unravel.

Fates bound by quest and history, Eryn and Arlan must unite to fulfil the immortal’s deal. But the Mage Guild has other plans for Eryn. As the pair fight to survive, Arlan may finally get his chance for justice, if he can bear the truth buried in the Guild’s lies, and Eryn will have to decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to finally put the woman she loved to rest.

Snow mentioned! It’s also a rare moment where Ada cares what someone else thinks. Honestly I loved adding this bit and the letter exchanges between Ada and Clara. The book can be quite dark but their version of flirting is adorable. Ada was a jeweller before a thief. thellian.com/reborn-in-ash 💙📚🪐
A few weeks after Ossain, snow began to fall. Ada and Clara had been exchanging letters while she worked on the brooch, but now Ada worried servants would be less willing to carry the messages. She forced herself to declare the brooch finished and sent it to Clara before going out in the snow to train, needing something to stop her wondering what Clara would think of it. Keeping her hands hidden under a heavy cloak, she could reach the magic of her ethelid by contact with any part of her skin, as Clara had shown her. However, the connection was strongest in her hands, so she wore fingerless gloves. Despite the protection her walled area gave against the bitter winds, she needed a hot bath to stop shivering when she returned to the manor. She sank beneath the water, trying to shut out thoughts of all the flaws in the brooch. She should have reworked it again.

My dearest Ada,
Words cannot express my gratitude for your gift. It has been well worth these days of anticipation.

This #WIPSnips comes from one of Eryn's early chapters. Trees have feelings too! In my book world anyway. #BookSky 💙📚🪐
In the following text, the word "warmth" is highlighted.

Eryn sat by an oak clear of barbed vines at the clearing’s edge and set her hand upon a root. She closed her eyes and reached her awareness towards the tree’s – an awareness scholars didn’t believe existed, for the skill to commune with plants and trees was rare and difficult to nurture. With so much unfilled time when she was a child, Eryn had turned to trees for comfort and discovered the truth for herself. Trees were as aware as they were, and granted her far more kindness than the kitari ever had, save for Darrys and her beloved.

Rather than be annoyed at her for disturbing its rest, as some older trees were prone to, the oak sent her the warmth of welcome and its fondness for her. As always, its greeting was tinged with sadness. It had surprised her when she’d first realised the oak understood why her tears watered its roots, and she’d gained a deeper respect for trees. She sent it that respect as a greeting and focused her awareness on her essen instead of the tree, spreading that invisible sense across the clearing ready to alert her should a Nameless pass by. They disliked being watched, yet seemed unable to sense her essen. Losing their essens seemed to be part of their punishment for failing the trials. What the Lady had given, the Lady could take away.

New Nettle lines from my Echoes of Chaos WIP! Cat be catting. #WIP #BookSky #WriteSky
A screenshot of text, highlighted from "He won't harm you" to "which he batted at"

Hale appeared around the side of the manor, caging Arlan’s tears. She stood holding a wicker basket covered with a plaid cloth, and poking out from under it was a bottle that made Arlan’s mouth water. But Hale didn’t approach. She stared at Nettle, her eyes wide.
“He won’t harm you, I promise,” Eryn said. “He’s as tame as any cat.”
“The stable tomcat swipes at me often,” Hale said.
“Well then, perhaps Nettle can teach him some manners. I assure you, Nettle knows better.” As if to make her point, Nettle rolled onto his side and stretched towards a daisy, which he batted at.
Hale’s posture relaxed. “Where did you find such a large cat?”
“In the foothills near Felgen. I hear all kinds of large creatures live in the Fangs of Ashra.”
“Is that Wyn’s elderflower cordial?” Arlan asked, trying to divert the conversation.
