Eldar @eldar.social · 38mThe general setup is fine, but by the time the author gets to their tables, I was rolling my eyes. They should've stopped forcing the cell biology metaphors after the first few paragraphs. I could get through it. 110
Eldar @eldar.social · 38m...draw a bunch of connections. You read these connections and keep wondering, why did they draw a parallel between this particular thing from their field, to this part of the diagram, when the similarities seem tenuous at best. That's what this article feels like. 100
Eldar @eldar.social · 38mPick a field you like/follow, pick a common diagram or framework from it, something easily recognizable. Now imagine someone from a very different field takes that diagram, looks at it briefly, and starts writing about their own, very different field, using very loose, shallow similarities to... 120
Eldar @eldar.social · 1hNot gonna lie, as someone who actually took some biochem courses in college, these forced analogies are painful to read. 120
Eldar @eldar.social · 02/10/2026I see multi-second, poorly opposed database queries in backend code almost every day. I mostly work in fintech, and BE query and data complexity is very high, so maybe we're just living in different worlds. 110
Eldar @eldar.social · 02/10/2026Most of my employers are so far from "good enough" that pursuing "the best" wouldn't get me very far. 🤕 110
Eldar @eldar.social · 02/10/2026A little bit? All of them have roughly the same features now, and none of those features matter much when your backend is poorly designed to service clients, which is the where 90% of performance issues originate. 200
Eldar @eldar.social · 02/10/2026If that's directed at me, you're jumping to conclusions. I've been doing platform work almost exclusively for like 6-7 years, a lot of it around performance and UX. As most folk in this area will tell you, choice of UI framework is like 5% of the picture. Most is about data fetching patterns. 200
Eldar @eldar.social · 02/10/2026I don't know, but selling to Americans "no matter what" is definitely not the answer. 101
Eldar @eldar.social · 02/10/2026Alberta exports to the US, which is not feasible long-term. Stopping production immediately is not realistic for many reasons. So, for now, opening other export avenues is unfortunately necessary. 110
Eldar @eldar.social · 02/10/2026The differences were always tiny (even perf, with React Compiler), and with LLMs writing so much of the code, I'm much better at reviewing React code than other libraries I'm considerably less familiar with. 100
Eldar @eldar.social · 01/10/2026Kinda similar thoughts: I was excited to learn Svelte and Solid a year ago; now I just stick with React and lost interest in most UI libraries and meta-frameworks. 100
Eldar @eldar.social · 01/10/2026This is going to sound cynical, but Americans have to stop waiting for scheduled dates to go out and protest. You can't wait for an invite to get out and then just go home. It's not a freaking birthday party. 000

Eldar @eldar.social · 29/09/2026I can't stand CC UX. It hides important stuff, and has idiotic shortcut defaults, especially for working with many branching subagents. It's like whoever designed it never touched the terminal before. 001
Eldar @eldar.social · 28/09/2026Maybe now all of the poorly informed "starship can't even reach orbit" takes will pipe down... 541
Eldar @eldar.social · 28/09/2026No one knows the mass of v3 sats except SpaceX, but estimates are around 1-2 tons per sat. 26 sats = 26-52 tons total payload for this flight. 020
Eldar @eldar.social · 27/09/2026Oh yeah, also HVAC-grade aluminum foil over PETG near the GPU exhausts to reflect/redirect 80-85C air, which could actually melt PETG if running continuously, which is wild. 000
Eldar @eldar.social · 27/09/2026No idea how to design "stator vanes" yet... and I'll need so many carefully designed internal shrouds for all the airflow routing. Also, intake/exhaust labyrinths will need careful curves, lined with acoustic foam, and so on. 100
Eldar @eldar.social · 27/09/2026This is going to be a fun CAD/3d printing project... by far the most ambitious thing I will have tried. Hoping to go from the unbearable ~70dBA on to bearable ~45dBA, given the thing will sit in my living room. Wish me luck 😅 100

Eldar @eldar.social · 26/09/2026I love Nvim, but how on earth is it so freaking bad at auto-restoring sessions. Every plugin for this is riddled with bugs and quirks. They all work 80% of the time, never 100% of the time. This is like Code Editor 101 shit, how is this not built in with top-notch support... 🤦 000
Eldar @eldar.social · 26/09/2026That's a very strong opinion about something that doesn't matter one bit. 000
Eldar @eldar.social · 25/09/2026SK/MB is... surprising. I think of Alberta as Can-MAGA country, not SK/MB 🤔 100
Eldar @eldar.social · 25/09/2026I think I do 95% of my "web searching" through OpenCode in the terminal now. Compared to 0% two months ago. 000
Eldar @eldar.social · 23/09/2026Again you need to consider the scale we're talking about here. Astronomy instruments are very sensitive, so they are impacted. Total solar energy hitting Earth's surface? No meaningful effect at all. Dust is an analogy, but even that reflects light in various directions, not just back outside. 120
Eldar @eldar.social · 23/09/2026No effect. It's like dust particles in front of your window: if you look very closely, you'll notice them, but they don't block any meaningful sunlight. Gotta remember, every single diagram/animation of sats in orbit has them enlarged by orders of magnitude to make them visible at all. 220
Eldar @eldar.social · 23/09/2026Me neither... Got like 20 half baked experiment repos, no idea what's going on in any of them. LLMs are the final boss of ADHD 🤕 010
Eldar @eldar.social · 23/09/2026I feel like I learned so much from working with you, design, UX, uncommon CSS techniques... and yes, a bit on pushing back on requirements too 😅 110
Eldar @eldar.social · 21/09/2026You are very pessimistic. I've mostly seen moves from Carney that I agree with, this one being the exception, so I'd rather wait for the details. I expect parts, maybe all of it, will get scrapped. 310
Eldar @eldar.social · 21/09/2026If you had excuses for not rebasing before LLMs (e.g. conflicts are confusing, etc), that's all gone now. Merge is dead. 000
Eldar @eldar.social · 21/09/2026I believe there were two camps trying to persuade him, both awful: supercharge AI (Musk, Zuckerberg, Kushner, etc.) and slow down and regulate (Dario, Sam). The latter seem to want regulatory capture and a way to drop training cost prior to IPO. No proper regulation was ever considered AFAIK. 110
