On Thursday, Florida's Board of Governors removed sociology from the general education curriculum of every university in the state. Chancellor Ray Rodrigues attacked the @asanews.bsky.social as illegitimate. On behalf of sociologists everywhere, I respond to them in today's @miamiherald.com:

Florida professors quietly defy restrictions on race and gender: ‘This is how authoritarianism works’
Sociology faculty are refusing to alter syllabi, even as state targets how race, gender and inequality are taught

This is why I’m fighting so hard to defend the sociology curriculum and our discipline. My classes make a difference. FL students deserve a quality higher education, and our society benefits from a well-educated citizenry.
Email from a student:

Good morning Professor Lauteria,
I just wanted to send this email to say thank you for being such a wonderful professor for me over the last few years. This is my last semester here at UF and I don't think I could have
succeeded without you. I hope that we can keep in touch in the future as you have really helped me grow not just as a student, but as an individual as well.
Thank you for your time,

Glad to see this getting more attention. Thanks, @ms.now. www.ms.now/opinion/flor... (P.S., I'm the professor who pointed out the typos last week. All that paper-grading finally paid off!)

Opinion | It just became a lot harder to teach sociology in Florida
Robyn Autry: Florida's ultimate goal appears to be ending the teaching of sociology altogether

“This textbook serves the ideological interests of the Florida state government[…]. [It] erases our field’s capacity to address social problems and sets a dangerous precedent for the state to impose its own definition of science well beyond sociology.” www.gainesville.com/story/news/e...

This semester’s been very intense so far… and somehow, I don’t think it’s calming down any time soon. FL’s anti-“woke” witchhunt has been so wasteful, so misguided, and so disruptive. My students deserve a quality education, not this propagandized mess. www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty...

Hard to think of today as Independence Day under the current regime. As if we haven’t already seen terrible human rights violations, the deaths resulting from Medicaid cuts will be devastating. But… I’m more fearful for folks trapped in the Florida concentration camp when hurricanes roll in… 😢

I hope you’ll be participating in the economic blackout tomorrow, boycotting major retailers and only shopping small, local businesses if you need any emergency supplies, preferably with cash. CONSIDER “LEVEL UP” OPTIONS * Cancel Amazon Prime * Don’t Google anything * Use Duck Player for YouTube

Had some frustrating experiences at work this week, but I’m feeling really good about being at UF in this capacity. I’ve managed to, in a fairly short amount of time, connect with and help a lot of undergrads expand their horizons (and I hope some pubs come out of it!).

The idea that fairness and centrism in reporting are the same thing is a disease I don’t think these people are ever going to recover from.

With all the new #gamestudies folks that moved over it's a good time for me to post that submissions are open for the PCA/ACA conference in New Orleans in April. Why, yes, I am one of the Area Chairs. Deadline November 30. Submission for abstracts information here: pcaaca.org/page/submiss...

First post? I hear self-promotion is important… I’m a Univ of FL sociologist, with interests in culture, globalization, science and technology, and gender and sexuality. Previous work on queer game studies; now exploring Japanese game industry. Thread of my pubs to follow~
